Principal's Pen
By now we are all hopefully in the swing of the new school year and of course in a routine with homework. Hopefully you are also in the routine of reading with your child every day. Children who read, or are read to, each day, will be exposed to over 1 800 000 word in a year and over 2500 books over the time of their primary schooling! The results of this exposure are clear and here are just a few of the reasons why it is important to take an active interest in reading with our children:
- Books widen knowledge, increase vocabulary and help to teach children about language and the world.
- Reading at home is linked to success in reading at school.
- Good readers perform better academically
- Reading with your child helps to build common ground and strengthen relationships.
- Reading helps children to develop attention span (and limits screen time).
So enjoy reading time with your child, not only home readers, but also perhaps a great library book or two each week.
Students have been loving our new computer lab as they have worked with Mrs Wilcox mastering the digital technology curriculum. The lab consists of a class set of computers and a new electronic whiteboard and means our school improvement priority of improving student skills and knowledge in ICTs is well underway.
Congratulations Summer who has been selected to represent City District at the Metropolitan North Regional Trials in Basketball.
Well done also to Mackenzie who received a medal on parade for her resilience and perseverance on the home front during her parent’s 6 month deployment overseas. This presentation acknowledges some of the challenges faced by our military families.
