Class News - Year 5/6
Written by Bronte Scholes together with Adelyn Blatchford and Isabella Hall
On the 6th of August, Isabella, Adelyn and I attended Parliament House with Mrs Burrows. Tim Mander, MP Member for Everton, invited us to attend along with three other schools, McDowall, Albany Hills and Everton Park State School.
Once we arrived, Mr Mander gave us a tour throughout the building. We got to see the chair where the Monarch sits when he comes to visit. We were very lucky to go into the Legislative Assembly Chamber where politicians debate the laws. We learnt that there are 93 members of Parliament and that the Mace Bearer carries the mace while entering the debating room. Lastly, Tim Mander showed us the library that contains all the speeches from the arguments that have happened since the 1800’s. He called it the ‘Harry Potter Library’ as it looks very similar. We had an awesome time and agreed that this was a great experience.
Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)
This term in HASS, 5/6 students have been learning about Australia’s position in the world. With the Olympics being held this year, it is a perfect opportunity for students to learn about Australia’s relationship with other countries and in particular, our relationship with Asia. Students have each selected an Asian country to research and will create PowerPoint slides to present their findings. They have been looking into environmental characteristics such as climate and natural features, human characteristics such as demographics, economics and culture and will be looking into Australia’s top trading partners and the reasons trade is important. We can’t wait to see their finished presentations!
