YEAR 6 CAMP
On Wednesday 21st October to Friday 23rd October, the Year 6 students, with Mr Roxburgh and Mrs Leeson, went on school camp to Garapine (which is near Gympie, along the Mary River).
Over our 3 day, 2 night camp, we participated in activities such as; group initiatives, archery, kayaking along the Mary River, high ropes and the highlight for many, the giant swing! This activity saw each of us being pulled up as high as possible by our team mates and then the individual letting go, free falling then swinging out high across the treetops. The butterflies certainly were there the moment before letting go, as were some screams on the way down!
The first night after dinner (which was Spaghetti Bolognese) we participated in a whole range of fun activities such as building the tallest tower we could out of dry spaghetti pasta and marshmallows and fun music quizzes. After that it was bedtime and of course we all fell asleep quickly and easily… isn’t that right Mr Roxburgh and Mrs Leeson?!?
After a full day of more activities, let’s just say the second night was somewhat quieter for all, we watched an old school movie that Mrs Leeson and Mr Roxburgh said we’d like, we weren’t quite sure, however, they were right and the movie didn’t disappoint – we highly recommend ‘Cool Runnings’.
Lots of funny moments were shared on camp, memories that we’ll cherish for many years to come and we would like to thank our Year 6 teachers enormously for their time in organising our school camp and encouraging us during all activities and waking to us, well some of us, through the night whist on camp! We really appreciate your time and effort in being there with us creating these memories.

Below are some insights into a few of the activities we experienced on school camp, from the perspective of some of our fellow Year 6 classmates.
Camp - Night Activities
The first night of camp, we did lots of different games after dinner. In one game, we had to hold hands in a line and pass a hula-hoop through the line without letting go of each other’s hands. There were two lines. My line won. Another game was where we were in lines again and the leader had a cup of water. We had to pass it back over our heads without looking back or spilling it. The games were fun, but we also watched a movie, ‘Cool Runnings’ on the second night which we really loved!

Camp – Kayaking
Kayaking was my favourite part of our Garapine camp compared to the other wonderful activities we experienced. At first, I was scared that I would capsize into the cold river, however, I overcame that fear by controlling our kayak and working with my partner. We adapted quite quickly into kayaking and we won a race that we got involved in. We had this whole plan to splash our teacher’s kayak although this resulted with accidently hitting my teacher with the paddle and our kayak filled with water like a cold bath. Although most of our trip in the Mary River was exciting, we kayaked straight into a problem. Around six kayaks, including mine, got stuck in a narrow stress point. The water was nearly 20cm thin and had a lot of seaweed and fungus living in it. We were stuck for quite a while and were so tired but relieved when we made it out. We hit the problem again on the way back but this time we knew how to resolve it. Overall, I had a great time and hope to go again in the future.

Camp - Group Initiates
On camp we did many activities, but the one that stood out the most to me was the group initiatives. It was our first activity and our loudest by far! The first initiative was balancing a see-saw with everyone on. After a couple of arguments and group meetings, we all sat down with some people lying down in the middle to balance it. On to the next activity and we had to balance everyone on a 50cm platform that you had to swing onto. After two meetings, many techniques tried and failed attempts later, we successfully balanced everyone on the miniscule platform. Our technique was two people round the corners with their arms out as a barrier to stop others from falling. Then came the fun game. You and your two other team mates had to compete with four other teams. Blindfolded, we had to hit cans off two milk crates. It was challenging but people worked through it and hit the cans off. Through courage and teamwork we finished the group initiates.

Camp - Archery
On the first day of camp my group did archery from about 3pm-5pm. First we went through safety instructions but then straight to Archery! Oh and of course we got told where to aim, how to fire etc. Everyone got a turn relatively quickly and it basically worked like this; four people would step up toward the target and grab their bow and arrows and each person would have five shots and would fire!! We would then carefully go and retrieve the arrows and bring them back to the next person. Many people managed to hit the target and I even hit on my first attempt but the most impressive shot was when someone managed to hit a bullseye (Well done Chevy!) Overall, I very much enjoyed archery it was my favourite activity while on camp and probably will stay that way. It may be hard to aim but it is in my opinion the best camp activity.
