2020 – The Year that Was!
As I write my final Newsletter Article for 2020 I reflect on what an extraordinarily unique year it has been for the students, staff, parents and the community of Enoggera State School. A year in which learning for students has comprised several modes of delivery (class, year level, at home, and online). A huge thank you to all teachers, parents and students who in spite of the hurdles and uncertainties that Covid 19 gave kept to “business as usual” to ensure that students remained engaged in learning and socially connected with their teachers and classmates via online platforms and Facebook theme days.
Reassuringly, research shows that when students have had disrupted learning, or in the cases of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the Christchurch Earthquakes in New Zealand, significant missed schooling results DID NOT suffer. John Hattie, a leading educator and Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) chairman stated “students' performance actually went up in the final exams - the difference was teachers focused on "what has to be learned" instead of getting through a lot of curriculum.”
You will receive your child’s report card on Wednesday 9th December 2020. The report card will detail information outlining the knowledge, skills and understanding your child has demonstrated in key learning areas studied in Term’s 3 and 4. It is very important not to focus on the grade awarded but rather, discuss with your child areas in which they feel they have shown strengths or improvements; identify some factors they would like to improve or develop and ask your child to set themselves 1 – 2 learning goals they would like to achieve in Semester 1 2021.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mrs Butler on her decision to retire after a 38 year career with Education Qld (14 years as a school leader). On behalf of our community, I would like to thank her for her dedication to our “big, little school" and wish her well on her future adventures!
I wish you all a safe and relaxing break and look forward to working with you all in 2021.
