Year 2 News

What a wonderful start to the year we have had in Year 2. The children have embraced the more challenging work that Year 2 brings and we are constantly amazed at their enthusiasm for learning.

In English we have been focussing on reading, writing and performing poetry. We have enjoyed watching and listening to poets present their poems so we can learn how to present our own poetry innovations. This is a very exciting unit that supports the children to recognise and reproduce rhyming patterns, rhythmic patterns and other poetic features. We are having great fun watching alliteration videos and using alliteration ourselves. Ask your child to give you a demonstration of their alliteration skills!

In Maths we have covered so many areas of learning, including using calendars, counting large collections, skip counting using collections and measuring length using informal units of measurement, including parts of our bodies. As you can see by our photos, we do a lot of hands on work to support our learning as well as having fun!

We are all really looking forward to our excursion to Samford Historical Museum in Term 2. Look out for more information later this term. At the museum we will visit an old school building and have the chance to look at some old style technology, like telephones and washing wringers with a handle to turn. This visit aligns with our HASS unit about technologies changing over time. 

For students in 2A: Please keep sending in empty boxes and soft plastic, like bubble wrap or old plastic bags, to help us make our strong, water resistant treasure chests. Shoe boxes would be great. This is going to be a fun Science activity. We are testing the strength of paper once it gets wet and soon we will be able to make some recycled paper.

In our movement breaks we have found some fun dance and exercise videos that we can move and sing along to. It’s a fun and happening place in Year 2 and we hope your children love spending their days here as much as we do!

Students have thoroughly enjoyed their Olympian portraits in Art as well as their umbrella colour wheels.

We are also having a blast learning Kung Fu Punctuation in our Grammar lessons. Ask us to show you the cool moves we know!

2A and 2B will be constructing a ‘treasure chest’ for their science project later on in the term. The aim is to combine two materials to create a treasure chest that is both strong and water-resistant. Please see the email sent from the classroom teacher for more information.
