Principals Pen

Dear Parent and Caregivers,

It was great to see so many interested people at the first of our P & C Meetings for 2021 held last week.  It was also great to hear of the great projects our P & C are currently working on for the school, such as the roof over the multi-purpose court which is the big ticket item for this year.  Funding has been approved and is ready to go so we are just waiting on final costings and commencement dates. The next meeting will be the AGM where all positions will be declared vacant and we refill the committee for this year.  It would be great to see people take on the roles to keep our P & C firing along.  The current committee have done an excellent job during their terms of office, but would love to see some fresh faces take on the leadership positions.

Next week will see the School Council re-convene for 2021 and following that first meeting there will be opportunity for new people to join the school council, so keep an eye out in the newsletter for further information around nominating for a position on the School Council.

You may be wondering what the difference is between the P & C and the School Council. The main difference is that whilst the P & C is responsible for fundraising and supporting the school financially and in kind, the School Council is more involved in the strategic direction of the school.

Likewise, the Local Chaplaincy Committee met today for a pre-meeting to enlist some new support and Chappy Sarah tells me it was a great success, so we look forward to some renewed interest in the LCC as we head towards the first official meeting for the year.

WELLBEING

This week on assembly I spoke to the students about the importance of using the character strength of kindness by performing random acts of kindness, using kind and soft words and showing kindness by smiling.  It was lovely to see 3A took on board my messages and created a random acts of kindness wall in their classroom where they could all post their kind acts towards their classmates.  They brainstormed a number of ways they could show kindness at school and then are posting on the board when they perform one of those acts of kindness.  Keep up the great work 3A!

PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS

A reminder re:- our Parent Teacher Meetings are this term, and we are going to trial a whole-school muster event for this.  We will hold the evening in EPAC on Tuesday 16th March from 3:15-7:00pm.  All teachers will be available on this evening for 10 minute interviews to be booked through our SOBS Booking program.  Watch the newsletter for more details from Mrs O’Malley about the booking process and when it is open.

NAPLAN 2021

Another reminder about NAPLAN 2021.  As you may have heard in the media, NAPLAN will continue for students in Year 3 and 5 in Qld schools in 2021.  As our school was preparing to go online with NAPLAN testing last year before it was cancelled, we will continue with that preparation this year.  We will conduct the practice tests for the students to practice the format and to check connectivity etc between March 22 and April 30 and the actual online tests will be conducted between 11-21 May, 2021. If your child is in Year 3 or 5 and you have any concerns about your child sitting the NAPLAN tests this year, please contact myself or our Head of Department-Curriculum- Mrs Amy O’Malley.

Every Day Counts

A reminder that all students of school age are required to come to school every day unless they are sick.  Likewise, students need to be at school on time every day.  If your child is consistently coming late to school, they are missing core learning time and often concepts that will set them up for success for the rest of the day.  If you are struggling to get your child to school and require support, please reach out as we can put you in contact with agencies that can help.  There are also a whole range of resources available on the Department of Education website at:

https://education.qld.gov.au/initiatives-and-strategies/initiatives/every-day-counts/for-parents-and-community

Did you know that just missing a few minutes every day or missing a day a fortnight as per the poster below can seriously cause your child to fall behind at school and impact their schooling.

Till next time,
