Year 3 Class News

This term in Science we have been learning about matter and how it exists in three forms; solids, liquids and gases. We have been doing a lot of hands-on investigations to explore how matter can change state when heat is either added or removed. The students have been focusing on applying their scientific skills to predict, observe and draw conclusions about their learning during these experiments. Some of the investigations we have conducted include; a viscosity race to see how liquids flow; how long different solids take to melt; how the properties of honey change when heat is added and removed; and how long some liquids take to reach their freezing point.

Maths this term has been busy with different topics such as fractions, symmetry, interpreting maps, angles and 3D shapes. The students have impressively taken on the variety of topics and applied their knowledge and understanding with great success. We have been looking at several topics such as symmetry and fractions within the classroom environment, but also extending to outside and in nature. The students loved getting hands-on with playdough and making 3D models of shapes such as triangular prisms, cubes and square-based pyramids to name a few. The next topic we will be exploring is collecting data, graphing, and interpreting these findings, which is always a firm favourite with the students ?

On Thursday 4th November 2021, Year 3 went on an exciting excursion to Trevena Glen Farm. We wanted to know what it was like to work on a farm, to help us write a procedure for our English assessment. We got to participate in 4 exciting rotations of making animal feed, hand feeding the farm animals, exploring the different phases of egg growth and discussing the stages of paddock to plate. Here are some of our highlights:

“My favourite part of the excursion was feeding the donkeys and making their food because the food was so mushy in my hands.” – Ethan M

“I love the goats because we got to see Gus do an obstacle course.” – Chiara

“I loved the egg exploration because the Farmer turned off the lights and we got to see inside of a chicken egg and there was a small babies inside.” – Mason

“I liked the chicks because I got to hold a black chick and the chick pecked my freckles with his orange, tiny beak!” - Olivia

“I liked the rabbits that squeaked so much, it sounded like a bird. I liked the goats that we got to make food for.” – Ivy A

“My favourite part of the excursion was the tractor ride because we got to sing farm songs and save our energy.” – Kai
