Class News - Year 1

Hello from Year 1,

This term, grade one have been learning about personifying an animal in for a story. They have been learning to give human traits to an animal and insert that character into a Willy the Wimp story. After creating their character they then used the Book Creator Application on the iPad to insert their character directly into the Willy the Wimp story of their choice.

Here are some iPad samples. These are still works in progress. The students still need to edit their work before giving their final interview and explain who their character is and how it fits into the story.

The students have enjoyed the learning. Creating a character and then seeing it come to life in a story has provided them with a deeper understanding of how characters are developed in stories.

Grade 1 also had a visit from Enoggera Fire Station to learn about fire safety. The children learned about the importance of knowing what the fire alarm sounds like in their home and the best way out of their house is in fire. They also learned about good fires and bad fires and what to do if they find a bad fire. We learned about two strategies to protect them in a fire - “stop, drop and roll” and “ get Down low and Go, Go, Go”. The students also learned the importance of knowing their full name and address and where to stand when they get out of their house as well as what to do if they can’t get out of a room because of fire.

Finally, the students got to see and hear what a fire fighter looks like and sounds like when dressed in their fire gear so they won’t be so afraid.
