LEARNING CURVE WELLBEING PROGRAM
The Learning Curve focus this week is from the ‘Engagement and Mindfulness’ category. The wellbeing skill students are focussed on is called ‘Respectful and Firm’. Our students are learning that when their minds tell them something isn’t right for them to do, as it is risky and someone could be hurt, they need to use their strengths and be respectful and firm with their friends to say, “no”. Their friends should respect their courage. Students are working on this topic during their Health lessons and then following up with their class teachers as well as using their ESS Learning Curve diaries. The parent article regarding this topic is attached for your information.
‘GIANTS IN THE SKY’ MUSICAL
We are really looking forward to the first whole school musical production coming up at ESS which will be held across four performances on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of August. It is wonderful to see it all coming together with the ensemble groups, including our P-2 students learning their songs and performances. Much thanks to our Performing Arts staff Mrs Rees and Miss Dunstan who have put many, many hours work into this production thus far and also to the many other staff and parents who have been helping out with props, costumes etc. It really is a whole school event.
Ticket sales will open next week on 22nd July through Try Booking. The links to this booking system will be emailed out to parents, it will also be advertised on Facebook when the link opens. We hope to see four sell out shows, where each cast (Earth and Sky) will be photographed and videoed. Photos and videos will be available for purchase afterwards through an external company.
100 DAYS OF PREP
It was very exciting last week to see our Prep students celebrating 100 days of Prep and being 100 days smarter since they have been at school. They participated in lots of 100 activities in the Prep rooms and made some beautiful crowns and headbands with 100 things on them. Congratulations to our youngest students and we hope the next 100 days is just as exciting and fruitful.
PREP OPEN DAY
ESS will hold another Prep Open Day in Term 3 on Friday July 26 before our Prep Enrolment Interviews commence at the end of Term 3 and beginning of Term 4. The Prep Transition and Information sessions in Term 4 will be held on November 1 and 15 and then our final roll up afternoon, on December 11.
If you know of families who live in our catchment and are hoping to come here next year, please let them know of the next Open Day in Term 3. Families who have made their decision can drop in enrolments forms to the office at any stage to enable us to get them on the system and into the communication channels for next year.
NAPLAN REPORTS
The NAPALAN reports for our Yr 3 and 5 students who have sat NAPLAN earlier this year, have arrived to be distributed to parents. We will send these reports home in envelopes in the next couple of days. These are also saved digitally at school on One School so if you ever need an extra copy or lose it they are available from school. Now that the data has been returned to school, the leadership team will be spending some time analysing the data and unpacking it with class teachers to inform future teaching, learning and preparation activities.
INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENTS
Last week we were advised that our submission for funding for classroom upgrades in this new financial year had been approved. We were successful in gaining $450 000 towards classroom upgrades in B Block and if funding allows also C Block. We are currently waiting for the DoE heritage team to respond to some design requests for enclosing the verandah in B Block before final design drawings can be developed and costed to know if there is sufficient funding to spread across the C Block rooms as well.
We have also been successful in gaining another DoE Sustainability Grant to work on the water harvesting options in the school which will include replacing the broken tank and plumbing it in to the sprinkler system and the watering system for the vegetable gardens. We have also had approved up to $250 000 for other maintenance projects in the school which include repairing of roof in EPAC, flooding and plumbing issues under D Block and the bathrooms, repainting the interior of the Resource Centre and new security fencing around the front of the school.
YEAR 6 GRADUATION
Just a reminder to parents of Year 6, that the school is organizing the Graduation ceremony and the social function this year. The Graduation Ceremony will be held in the EPAC at 9am on Thursday 5th December and the social function (Dinner/Disco) for parents, students and staff will also be held in EPAC that night. We are currently getting quotes for the meal and entertainment organised at present, so more details should be available later this term. There will be an opportunity for parents of our graduating students to get involved later on to assist with some fundraising through the Student Council and then jobs such as decorating the EPAC etc.
OPINION SURVEY
This week all staff, students and parents should have received an email from the DoE with a link to complete the ESS annual Opinion Survey for this year. These emails were to be distributed from July 15. The survey links are individual links and are open from July 22 until August 16. The data from these surveys is collated by the DoE and shared with schools at the end of the year to inform planning for the following school year.
COLLABORATIVE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT
Next week on Wednesday morning we will have our School Supervisor and some Principals from neighbouring schools visiting us to undertake a Collaboration School Improvement visit. This is where I will get to share our school’s progress around our Annual Implementation Plan this year and will choose a problem of practice for the team to investigate during the visit. The leadership team have chosen our visible learning focus which includes our Learning Walls and Bump it up Walls in each classroom for the focus of the visit. They will meet with staff, talk with students and present their findings to the leadership team, which I will respond to. We look forward to having these colleagues in our school and sharing the great work we are doing here at ESS.
Till next time,
Anne Robinson
Principal
Welcome back to the new term. I hope that you all had a lovely holiday with your families over the break. It is sure to be another fantastic term of learning and fun at Enoggera State School with the Book Week Parade, Science Week, Year Level Excursions, Volleyball Cup, and the School Musical!
Our first assembly was a great celebration of the students in our school with lots of awards and certificates presented to students for Student of the Week, NAIDOC Week colouring competition, Environmental Excellence and Mathletics/Mathseeds.
A reminder that there are two days that our school is closed this term:
Wednesday 14th August for the EKKA holiday
Friday 30th August for a departmental Student Free Day.
These dates and other events can all be located in the newsletter calendar and on our school Facebook Page.
As we begin Semester Two, please check with your child or your child’s teacher if they need any stationery items to be restocked! It is surprising how quickly students go through their pencils, erasers and colours with all the learning activities that they complete every day. As always, please ensure that all items are individually named clearly to assist your child to manage their belongings. This is the same for items of clothing, shoes and hats. If items are clearly labelled, it is more likely that they will be found and returned to your child. Before coming to the office to ask about lost property, please check the lost property shelf near the uniform shop under A Block.
As the weather remains cold over the winter months, a reminder that students are required to either wear a school jacket available at the uniform shop (open Friday morning from 8am); or a plain jumper in a school blue colour. Students are not permitted to wear hoodies or jumpers with any printing or designs on them. Girls are permitted to wear blue stockings (or black if blue is unavailable). All students can also wear plain school blue tracksuit pants. A reminder that girls should be wearing suitable earrings and headbands to school. Headbands should be in school colours and earrings should be limited to plains studs. This Dress Code was developed collaboratively with the school community and supports the wearing of a school uniform to promote a sense of belonging and school pride. It also promotes a supportive environment fostering mutual respect among individuals at school by minimising visible evidence of economic, class or social difference. Thank you for your support of our School Dress Code.
Our school has a very active Facebook page with frequent posts to keep our school community informed of what is happening in our school. Our events are posted throughout the term to allow parents time to be prepared for the term ahead. To find our events, simply click on the more tab and then the events tab in the dropdown menu to go to our events.
If you have a Facebook page, we encourage all of our parents to follow our school page so you can enjoy the wonderful experiences our school has to offer. The more you interact with the page by liking and commenting on posts, the more our page will appear in your newsfeed. A reminder that Facebook is not the best platform to ask questions that you need immediate or urgent replies to, as we don’t always see questions in the comment sections of a post. This is best done by emailing the teacher/admin or calling the office.
Facebook is also not a site for posting complaints or negative comments about staff or school processes. If you have some constructive feedback for the school or an issue that you would like to raise, we would respectfully ask that you make an appointment to speak with the Principal to discuss your concerns. Any inappropriate comments will be removed from the platform. Please remember to never make comments on the page referencing a child’s name for privacy reasons.
Pillar Practice
Our three school pillars include Safety (Be Safe); Relationships (Be Respectful); and Learning (Be a Responsible Learner). Each fortnight at Assembly, a Pillar Practice is shared with staff and students that becomes our focus behaviour improvement. This fortnight, our Pillar Practice is around improving our behaviour in three key areas of the Relationships Pillar:
- Good Manners
- Including Others
- Using Appropriate Language
All class teachers are provided with a poster for their classroom and will explicitly teach our school expectations around the relevant pillar and behaviour. Students are reminded daily about our focus behaviour with the goal of improving this behaviour across the school. The Student Engagement and Behaviour committee reviews behaviour data across the school at their meetings to discuss future focus areas for identified behaviours of concern. This process is documented in our Student Code of Conduct and is part of our explicit teaching of behaviour in our school. You can support us by being aware of the current Pillar Practice and discussing the expectations with your children at home.
The Student Council is meeting this week for their first meeting of Term 3. This term, the Student Council will continue to fundraise for their legacy item by running two fundraisers.
- Pyjama Day – gold coin donation – Friday 2nd August
- Subway Meal Deal – Monday 2nd September
The Charity being supported by the Student Council this term is the National Endagered Species Foundation. Students will be able to bring their favourite stuffed animal to school on Friday 6th September and donate a gold coin to this charity.
The Wellbeing Initiative for this term will be an Appreciation Week. There will be more information provided prior to this event in Week 5 of term. Students will be demonstrating their appreciation visually in our school. Look out for our Gratitude Pin Wheel garden that will be planted very soon!
Thanks for your support of the Student Council.
AlphaBucks Competition
Enoggera State School has been nominated to participate in the B105 AlphaBucks competition. This is a timed competition involving answering random questions with a nominated first letter for all responses. Mrs Robinson and I have selected Bronte, as one of our school captains, to represent Enoggera in this competition
People from the radio station will visit on Wednesday 24th July (Week 3) to link to the radio presenter via phone to pre-record the segment. The competition will then be aired at the later time and date of Monday 29th July at 8:40am. It will be held in Bronte’s classroom with their classmates watching.
We wish Bronte luck and hope that she enjoys this experience.
Didjeribone Performance
Yesterday, as part of our NAIDOC week celebrations, our students had the opportunity to attend a Didjeribone performance in the EPAC with Tjupurru. Along with his music, he shared stories of his ancestors the Djabera Djabera people from the Kimberly region of WA.
With numerous opportunities during the performance for both individual on stage (Happy Birthday to Haze) and whole audience participation, Didjeribone was a uniquely Australian music experience accompanied by both personal and ancestral stories.
Using the didjeribone, face bass and cutting edge music production equipment, music was played, recorded then instantly played back on a loop to form a backing track. The process was repeated with loop track after loop track being added creating a rich, deep, multilayered soundscape. It’s then that the true magic happened as from the didjeribone the haunting wind, howling dingoes and humorous kookaburras populate this genuinely Australian piece of music.
For the finale, six students were invited on stage to form a human instrument with another two students selected as musicians. This was a truly amazing experience and an ideal ending for this astounding presentation.
Clubs and Activities
Our Lunch time Clubs and Activities program has been updated this term with some new activities and the continuation of some favourites. New activities include a Comic Book Club, Board Games, Construction, Quoits and Giant Games. Some favourite activities are continuing including Chess Club, Kids’ Yoga, Karaoke, Bubbles, Chalk Drawing and Just Dance Club. Visual posters are on display in all classrooms and the library for students to know what is happening each break.

Parent Teacher Interviews
A big thank you to teachers, parents and students who engaged in Parent Teacher Interviews this week. These interviews provided a wonderful opportunity for Semester One achievement to be reviewed with Semester Two learning goals and actions established.
Premiers Reading Challenge 2024
Please remind your child to keep reading furiously in order to meet the Premiers Reading Challenge this year of twenty books for Prep – Year four students and fifteen Books for students in Years five and six. If you have already met the target please have students return these forms to Mrs O’Malley as soon as possible. The final date for reading forms to be returned is Friday 23rd August.
NAIDOC WEEK
Last week Enoggera State School celebrated NAIDOC Week through a variety of activities both in and out of the classroom. Students particularly enjoyed participating in the NAIDOC Week colouring competition and The Didjeribone show in which Tjupurru used the didgeridoo and storytelling to teach us about First Nations culture.
Book Club Issue 5:
Book Club Issue 5 orders close on Friday 26th July. Orders can only be made online through Scholastic. Cash orders will not be accepted.

Head of Department, Curriculum
Hello Parents and Caregivers,
Please find below my updates for this coming fortnight.
STOP DROP AND GO ZONE – 285 South Pine Road
Just a reminder to parents that the South Pine Stop, Drop and Go zone is monitored each morning from 8:15am until 8:45am and each afternoon from 3:00pm till 3:15pm by a staff member. The correct procedure for this area is to drive up to the second gate where the staff member is on duty. This staff member will ensure the safety of your student/s into the school grounds. Please do not allow your children to disembark the vehicle until you have reached the front of the line. If you need to help your child out of your car and get their school bag, please do so as quickly as possible. The first gate closest to the OSHC and Administration should not be utilised for access from Stop, Drop and Go. If you do stop at the first gate, this causes a ripple effect in cars backing up and blocking the school entry and affecting the school crossing. Please follow the directions of the staff member to ensure the smooth transition of cars during these busy times.
Brisbane City Council has been advised of illegal street parking in the area and people not following the stop drop and go sign rules. Vehicles must not be left in this area at any time. If you require additional time to unload your student/s in the morning please ensure you are parking in a street park and walking up to the school. Alternatively, we have a stop drop and go zone located on Laurel Street. Thank you for your understanding with this matter.
CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
Did you know Queenslanders go through around 3 billion drink containers each year? Containers for Change has created a way to recycle those containers that incentivises Queenslanders, and positively impacts our environment and the communities we live in.
The Containers for Change Schools program is a school-based program designed to encourage Queensland schools to raise money through the Containers for Change scheme and help educate the next generation on the importance of recycling.
If you are collecting containers and would like to donate these to Enoggera State School, please use the following code: C10051863 when dropping off at one of the many Containers for Change depots.
GENERAL FINANCE
Just a reminder that full payment on the below activities is due soon. Please note if full payment and the online consent form isn’t received by the due date students will unfortunately not be able to attend incursions or excursions or participate in school programs. If you require financial assistance, please contact bsm@enoggerass.eq.edu.au to arrange a payment plan.

Just letting all parents and carers know, invoices are always sent out to the paying parent via email. The paying parent is allocated at time of enrolment and can only be changed if requested in writing. What this means is that only one paying parent can view invoices online through QParents. If you would like more information around this please email me on bsm@enoggerass.eq.edu.au . If you believe you may have a student credit on your account, please contact me directly to apply this credit as you are unable to allocate credits through QParents online.
We strongly recommend all parents to sign up to Qparents, so they can stay in the loop with the schools’ happenings. Starting from term 3, a new process will be starting through QParents, where consents will be sent out prior to an excursion/incursion. Once the consent has been granted then families will be invoiced. This ensures that only families that are consenting to excursions are invoiced to stop the double up on invoicing. If you have any other financial inquiries, please contact me directly.
SPARE UNIFORMS AND UNDERWEAR
Another quick reminder that it is important that all year 1 and prep students have spare clothes packed in their bags including underwear. We request this just in case a student has an accident throughout the day. If you have a child who has recently borrowed clothing from the office, could you please urgently return these spares and replacement underwear to the office as we have very few spare clothes. We are also happy to accept donations of underwear due to these not being returnable.
Have a fantastic fortnight.

Year One Ocean Life Incursion
Last term to support our learning in English and Science we attended an Ocean Life Incursion. Oceanlife Education brought sea cucumbers, sea stars, and a baby shark for us to learn about.
We learned about different marine animals, discussed their habitats, how their habitats meet their needs and learned interesting facts about them. We loved seeing the baby shark and looking at the shark jaws.

Welcome back to another busy term in sport.
Last week to help with our NAIDOC events, in PE we focused on a range of traditional indigenous games. We learnt about and played Kai, Gorri, Wulijini and Buroinjin.
I wonder if anyone remembers what Gool-Gool means, when we were playing Gorri?
Congratulations to 2C who won our Kai challenge. As a class they were able to keep the ball up in the air for a very impressive 13 seconds. Well done 2C!!!
