Thank you to the parents who have used Stop Drop Go over the past 3 weeks. It is really pleasing to see that, due to the great work by everyone, the line of cars rarely extends beyond the car park. Here are this week’s tips to make the process even more efficient –
- If you are the car at the front of the line, please drive all the way to the green striped pole before stopping. This helps us to fit more cars in the area.
- For the safety of students, we will only load the first 3 cars at any time. Please be patient - it’s surprising how quickly you get to be one of the first cars!
From next Monday, there will be a second Stop Drop Go area in Laurel Street, near the double gates close to the playground. Brisbane City Council has set up the area with the same green striped poles and there is room for 6 vehicles at a time. From Monday, there will be a staff member on duty in this area and, just as with the existing Stop Drop Go, please stay with your vehicle and we will load the first 3 cars at a time. Once again, students will be supervised until 3.15pm in this area so there’s no need to rush to line up. Please let your child know if you will be trialling this area next week so they know where to go.

Term 3 bell times and after school procedures will depend on the efficiency of the two Stop Drop Go areas. More information will follow.
What do social media sites such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Tiktok share? One commonality is that you should be 13 years old to sign up; however, we are aware of students who have accounts with one or more of these programs. If this is your under 13 year old, you might like to consider the following and cancel their access until they are able to legally sign up for an account.
- Is your child able to withstand negative online experiences?
- Does your child understand the importance of protecting their personal information?
- Does your child understand how privacy settings for social media work?
- Does your child understand what is safe to share online?
- Does your child know how to report cyberbullying and other kinds of abusive content?
- Is your child willing to let you establish clear rules and supervise their social media activity?
- Are you aware your child may view Adult content?
School staff are unable to control home access to these programs and therefore it is difficult to deal with issues that arise from their use at home.
After a couple of weeks with students back at school, there has been plenty of hard work going on in classrooms. Now that we are back to school routines, we are working towards the teaching and learning goals in our school strategic plan. Our support and classroom teachers are working together to plan and teach lessons, using strategies to differentiate for student learning needs. With so much expertise in our teaching staff, this is an opportunity for our teachers to learn from their colleagues.
Congratulations to Henry and Elizabeth, who participated in the Cross Country @ Home event earlier this term. At this stage, it is unclear what the rest of the year will look like around sporting events. Athletics will form part of the term 3 teaching unit in PE, however whether it will be possible to hold a carnival remains to be seen, as restrictions on numbers able to attend events are lifted. We will also be communicating information on District and State Athletics events as details are known.

Planning Days
Our Teachers are currently working very hard at finalising teaching, learning and assessment for Term 2 . Over the next few weeks (on Thursdays) Teachers will be taken offline to work with myself and the student services team to plan, engaging and appropriate learning programs for Term 3. Whilst this occurs Ms McKenzie and Mrs Wilcox will be taking classes and continuing regular classroom learning and routines.
Classroom Practice
At present all classes are introducing WALT posters and terminology with students in English and Maths. WALT is an acronym for We Are Learning To... This process is a clear, explicit and visual way for students to recognise, grasp and comprehend the concept / concepts of the day's lesson. Mrs Butler and I will be visiting classrooms over the coming weeks to ask students about this process and how it is assisting in their learning success.
Report Cards and Parent Interviews.
Just a reminder that Report Cards will be available for parents on Friday of Week 3 Term 3 for 2020. These will be emailed and available via QParents. Parent Teacher Interviews will be available in Weeks 8 and 9 of Term 3.

Year 4
Welcome back to Term Two. Thank you greatly for your patience and dedication during the start to the term with home schooling. Whilst I’m sure the students revelled in staying home with you, they have largely transitioned back to school eagerly and happily.
This semester we continue to have a strong learning focus on our Reading and Spelling programs, which are proving to be fantastic. The students are involved three times a week in reading groups and three times a week in spelling. The classroom teacher is also teaching the explicit strategies required to be a literate student.
We are diligently working on learning to write a traditional story that teaches a moral. We have all the resources we need and have already made a start.
In Mathematics, we are covering a range of topics including number, patterns, chance and data, mapping and direction, measurement and space. It has been interesting to note how much basic number facts impact on most areas of both mathematics and our lives.
We are also concluding our History/HASS unit, which looked at pre and post first Australian contacts throughout history. We will launch into Geography both now and in Semester Two. HASS will be reported on only in Semester Two.
In Science, we have looked at soil and erosion, plants and their needs and we are beginning a research task about an Australian endangered animal.
We are also working on PE, health, technology, digital technology and art. We have looked at and enjoyed drawing self-portraits and we are working towards looking at colour and exploring tint, tone and shade. We are excitedly dancing and continue with music.
Overall, despite our unusual start, it has been a productive and positive year, which we are all embracing.

Wakakirri News
Wakakirri has started! The Year 5/6 students have commenced learning their sections of the work and they are looking fab! Our Year 4 students will move to Wakakirri as soon as their Dance assessment is completed. Students in lead roles have been working hard on a Friday afternoon. This time has been invaluable in developing the story line and characters.
As stated in previous newsletters, we are still waiting to hear about the live performances. In the meantime, we are forward planning in preparation for at least a school community performance at the end of the year.
We are after some donations:
- Toys/dolls that are a minimum of 30cm tall (students will be dancing with these so they need to be sturdy)
- Grey and green recycled garbage bags
Please place any of the above items in the Wakakirri bin located in the office. Thank you for your assistance in advance. Finally, thank you to all the students who have completed set designs or provided information about potential costumes. A big thank you to our staff team members too who include Mrs Leeson, Ms Kerr, Mr Schwarten and the artistic Mr Roxburgh who will be starting on the sets this week.
We also have some fabulous canvas prints of past Wakakirri performances now on display in EPAC. Make sure you check them out, they’re awesome and a touch of history!

Inter-school, District and other Sporting Events
While we are all keen to get sport and sporting events back up and running, like many other aspects of life at this time, they form part of the staged relaxation of restrictions.
Currently, Education Department Guidelines restrict sport (with the exception of PE lessons), whole of school events and excursions, all of which form part of any school sport, inter-school, district or regional program.
What this means simply is that all sports events are currently on hold, cancelled or postponed. Decisions about:
- when to resume,
- how to resume,
- what will resume or ultimately be cancelled,
- what modifications will need to be made to events,
- can they fit into the calendar,
are all being made by various departments and groups outside of the schools control.
These departments and groups will communicate with schools when relevant decisions are made outlining the path forward. In turn, the school will then work on the appropriate plans to move forward within our own settings.
We are looking at various potential scenarios and making some preparations where possible, in readiness for the return to sport. When we have a clear picture of what the programs look like we will communicate this information to parents and families.
In the meantime, please be patient – understand that there have been no decisions released and any ‘whispers’ you hear are just that ‘whispers’ and speculation.
Each school is working within its own context and in the best interest of its own student body as a whole. The school down the road, that your friends children go to or maybe an older siblings school maybe doing something entirely different, that doesn’t mean they have any more information than we do, it just means they are working in a direction that suits the context of their school.

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
Due to COVID-19 the number of containers collected have been lower compared to our usual takings. We would love to get this back on track.
Please note that parents are allowed on school grounds to drop off containers to the purple bins.
Unsure how to collect your containers?
You can collect your containers using whatever you like! There is no need to have special bags for the collection. Just put your containers in a bucket, tub, storage container or even an old shopping bag and when it is full, put it in the boot of your car and empty the containers into the purple bins located at the front and back of the school at drop off or pick up time. It is that easy.
Remember, a little bit of effort on your part will make a big difference for our school and the environment.
If you wish to visit the depot Our school scheme ID is C10051863
The purple bins will be out during Term 2 if you would like to drop your collection off between 7am and 3pm.
Remember to only dispose of eligible containers and not rubbish. Check the back of the container for the 10c symbol.
