A picture says a thousand words, and if you look at the photos from the colour run, you will see what I mean – the smiles say it all. Unfortunately the weather was not our friend on the day, but it didn’t matter as students ran the colour circuit. Thanks for your support in getting behind this event. There will be substantial funds to put towards the goal of building a roof over our multipurpose court. Congratulations to the highest individual fundraisers Ava, Isobel and Carter, who were delighted to receive congratulatory presents and winning classes 3B, 5/6A and 5A who all received a treat from the tuckshop.
Thank you to the team behind the event, in particular our P&C Secretary Ainslie who worked tirelessly to ensure everything ran smoothly. To the rest of our P&C Executive, Jacqui, Patricia and Bec as well as the amazing parents who volunteered on the day, a huge thank you for braving the wet and cold and the ever changing order of events as we tried to dodge the rain. Thanks also to Vanessa from Two Ducks Photography for the amazing photos which captured the fun so well.

Our School Captains recently enjoyed a visit to Parliament House. The tour included historical and current information on the workings on parliament and a look at some of the amazing rooms and artifacts, including the Hansard Library and the Mace. Our Captains looked right at home seated in the House of Representatives!

Once again there have been issues with appropriate home social media use by some of our students. It is important to note that it is extremely difficult for us to address cyberbullying when students have home access to sites that are age inappropriate – ie 13years+ social media sites. Please be aware of the sites your children have signed up for and discuss how to be safe on social media with them. There are some excellent resources on the following website that you might like to have a look at - keeping your child safe online It is also timely to remind parents of the need to be aware of the varied views of sharing children’s images on social media. We only ever publish photos of students where we have media releases or permissions and parents need to be aware that many of our students do not have these permissions granted. If you upload photos of your children, please be mindful of who might be in the background.
Thanks to the support of parents, student pick up is working well at the front of the school at the moment, but the Laurel Street Stop Drop Go area, while not busy, is experiencing some teething issues. The green striped poles in Laurel Street mark the Stop Drop Go zone. If using this area, parents need to stay within their vehicles and keep moving forward as cars load and leave. Cars joining the zone need to do so from the back of the line – no vehicles should pull over in front of other cars already queued. Please work with us to get this pickup area running smoothly and keep our children safe.

We have had a very busy Term 3 in Year 1 with so many diverse and stimulating learning opportunities provided across all key learning areas for our students to engage in and there is many more left to come!
In English we have already successfully completed our first unit of work for the term. During this Unit the children engaged with a variety of literary texts where we explored animal characters and what human qualities they replicated. Each student created a unique character to be a part of a familiar story. Finally, they were buddied up and conducted an interview where they were asked and responded to questions regarding their new character. The students loved interviewing and being interviewed by their peers.

Our new unit in English will allow students the opportunity to develop an understanding of Aboriginal Culture by engaging with a variety of Dreaming stories. The students will compose and present a retell of their favourite cultural story to their peers.
Due to the restrictions in place we were unable to go to the Planetarium for our science excursion this year. But, we were lucky enough to have our excursion come to us with an incursion! As the students have been exploring the observable features of a variety of landscapes and skies. Our Starlab incursion will support the students’ knowledge of night sky through a variety of fun and exciting experiences.
We are very excited about our Queensland Fire Emergency Service visiting our school this term. During the visit the Fire Fighters will offer lots of fun and exciting activities for the students to participate in.

Drama
Our school were recently featured on the Wakakirri social media pages. They gave a flashback to our 2015 Screen Challenge entry called Chicken. Wakakirri acknowledged our fantastic result as the overall national story of the year winners. What an amazing achievement!
Sebastian, a past student was fabulous in the lead role. Seb played an anxious student who feared doing show and tell. With the encouragement of friends, this character was able to face his fears and deliver the presentation. Seb endured many minutes of being wrapped in plastic mid-summer, what a commitment to the Arts! Another previous student, Jack, took on the role as the fabulous cameraman. Jack displayed great leadership in calling takes when video moments needed to be done again. All students worked from a storyboard to deliver the film, wonderful extra-curricular opportunities for learning at ESS!

In Prep, we are working hard to develop our knowledge and skills around computers. The students have been learning to navigate the mouse and keyboard in Word and PowerPoint. All of our Preps are doing a fabulous job in signing in with their unique user names and passwords, way to go Preps!
In Years 1 and 2, students have been learning about designing and following algorithms. They will use this knowledge to navigate a floor robot through a number of obstacles.
Our Years 3-6 students are learning about computational thinking and the visual programming language, Scratch. They will use this knowledge to create a digital solution, a guessing game in Years 3-4 and a maze in Years 5-6.
While we can’t wait to see the final product, as teachers, guiding students through the process of learning new skills, knowledge and understanding is the most exciting part for us. Well done students.

More details to follow.
The Scholastic Book Club brochure for Issue 6 will be sent home this week and orders need to be put in before 3rd September. If you are interested in making any purchases you can find out how on the second last page of the brochure. Don’t forget that as a bonus the school receives free resources with any purchases made. This collection of eBooks includes easy readers, comic and graphic books, science fiction and fantasy resources. Please take the time to look through the huge selection of books that are available for students to read and for you to read to your child.
We have also registered again this year for the 2020 Premier's Reading Challenge
The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative for state and non-state schools and home-educated students up to Year 9, and children enrolled in an early childhood centre or program.
The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning. Children and students can participate in the challenge within their school, early childhood centre or as individual readers (home-educated students or students whose schools are not participating in the program).
For Prep — Year 9 students to successfully complete the challenge they must read or experience an allocated number of books based upon their year level during the reading period.
Children and students who complete the challenge will have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.
For further information and to download the school reader record form visit the Premier's Reading Challenge website https://readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au/
Happy Reading

We are working hard to include some sporting events into our calendar for this term while adhering to current Covid Restrictions.
School Athletics Carnival
Both an Upper and Lower School Carnival for students is planned in Week 10 of this term. With the current Covid Guidelines requiring schools to minimise adults gathering at school, these will be a Student and Staff Only Events. Sadly, parents will be unable to attend this year. We will work on having lots of photos taken and sharing them with families at the completion of the event.
Our Upper School Carnival (Year 3-6) will be held on Wednesday 16th September. This will be an all-day event.
Our Junior School Carnival (Prep-Year2) will be held on Thursday 17th September between 9am and 11am.
Volleyball Cup
A number of our Year 5 & 6 students have nominated to participate in the Annual Volleyball Cup at Craigslea State High School. This year we have 6 teams competing on Thursday 10th September. Students involved have received forms and payments are required to be made in the usual ways to the school by the 28th August.
Reminder that students are to wear their normal school shirts on this day – NOT their senior shirt and that parents are also unable to attend this event.

Please mark your diaries for our Father's Day Stall at school on Wednesday 2nd September. All students will have the chance to attend the stall with their teacher, one class at a time.
We have lots of gifts this year so students can purchase more than one item if their budget allows with prices starting at 50 cents and our highest priced item at $10. We have approximately 40 different gifts this year for students to choose from. Here is just a sample of what will be available on the day to purchase.
Socks - $3
Coffee mug - $4 or $6 (small or large)
Note pad - 50c
Phone holder - 50c
Gym towel - $2
Please make sure your students have cash with them to purchase on the day and a shopping bag that they can use to bring the item home in.
Thank you to our volunteer committee who have organised the stall and gifts this year.
Trivia Night - POSTPONED
Unfortunately we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Trivia Night that was previously advertised for Friday 11th September. We will reschedule the Trivia Night for a date either later this year or in 2021 once we have some more certainty around the restrictions that will be in place for larger events.
Crazy Colour Day Fun Run
What a great day we had on Friday 7th August for our Crazy Colour Day Fun Run. The photos and smiles on faces said it all and even the rain couldn't wash away our fun (we think it actually made for more fun!). In total, because of your efforts, the P&C raised $22,778 from the event which will go a very long way towards school improvements, particularly our goal to build a roof over the multi-purpose court.
Congratulations to all of our students (and staff) who took part and raised funds, and particularly to our top fundraising students and classes.
Top fundraising students:
- Ava R
- Carter T
- Isobel H
Top fundraising classes:
- 3B - Mrs Arthur/Mrs Fitzgerald
- 5/6A - Mrs Leeson
- 5A - Mr Chinn
Thank you to our amazing volunteers who organised the event and our ESS staff for their encouragement and facilitation of the event. The weather and last minute changes caused by the weather made your job very challenging but we couldn't have done it without you.
Please look out for the email from the School Fun Run company about online ordering of prizes. All prizes MUST be ordered before the cut off date of Monday 24 August. (Check your spam folder if you've not seen the email as yet).

Queensland Road Safety Week 24-28 August
When we’re behind the wheel, driving safely should be our number one priority. You might be surprised to know that dangerous habits like tailgating, not giving way, and running red lights, contributed to half of all serious crashes in Queensland.
The Fatal 5 (speeding, mobile phone distraction, drink driving, fatigue and not wearing a seatbelt) also contributed to over one third of serious crashes where people were seriously injured or lost their life, from 2014 to 2018.
What can you do? Qld Road Safety week is around the corner! Show your support by kicking those bad driving habits and make our roads a safer place for everyone. Check out the StreetSmarts website for a range of activities and resources https://streetsmarts.initiatives.qld.gov.au/
