Yr 5 Language Conventions |
Yr 5 Numeracy |
Thank you to those who have supported their children at home to ensure they are as well prepared as possible, and by ensuring they get to school in plenty of time ready for the testing. A big thank you to Mrs O’Malley as the NAPLAN Coordinator, Ms McKenzie as the Test Administrator, Mr Wilson who is the Technical Officer and to all of the Teachers and Teacher Aides who have helped out with supervising the tests. A big thank you also to Chappy Sarah and Mrs O’Malley who have coordinated breakfast snacks for the duration of the tests. Whilst a new experience this year being online, we have endeavoured to minimise any stressors on students and staff.
BEHAVIOUR FOCUS - PILLAR OF SAFETY
This week on our whole school assembly, Ms McKenzie revisited the pillar of safety from our Student Code of Conduct. The focus of the Pillar is:
- Using equipment properly and safely
- Responding to instructions promptly
- Protecting safety of self and others
- Caring for our school and environment
- Moving around the school safely
Our behaviour team using the expertise of Mrs Wilcox, Chappy Sarah and the drama students created a vignette to demonstrate the Pillar to the students. It was very well received and a great way to engage the students. What is the old saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words!”
Chappy Sarah also announced that we would be holding a Red Safety Pillar day on May 19 to raise funds for Chaplaincy, where students can wear red to school for a gold coin donation towards Chaplaincy.
We look forward to the team creating further vignettes to teach the ESS Pillars to the students at assembly. What a great initiative- well done all!
UNIFORM
A further reminder from last fortnight that our school uniform contributes greatly to the tone of the school and encourages students to take pride in the school and their appearance. It also ensures identification outside the school confines. Thus, to ensure student safety and to promote a high standard of dress at Enoggera State School, the School dress code applies to all students.
At Enoggera State School we have a very clear dress code which abides by the Education General Provisions Act (2006) and is approved by the P & C. It is expected that students wear their full uniform to school every day including the school shirt, shorts/skorts, black shoes, white socks and school hat. In cooler weather students need to have blue jumpers/track pants or a school jacket only. At present we are seeing a lot of students wearing multi coloured jumpers, non-school hats and coloured shoes and socks to school. We would appreciate your support in ensuring that your children come to school in correct uniform every day so that consequences do not need to be applied as per the approved dress code attached.
If you are struggling to provide the correct uniform, please contact the school as we may have some links to charities/organisations that could help.
150th CELEBRATION
It was wonderful to be part of the discussions at the last P & C meeting re: the plans for the school’s 150th celebrations. In addition to the celebration video that has been created for the school, the P and C are planning a Family Fun Day on Saturday, August 28. Please keep this day free to support the event.
We are very fortunate to have a past students group helping out who are very keen to assist and be part of the celebrations and setting up memorabilia displays for the event. Stay tuned for further details re: the date as it gets closer, but I would encourage as many families as possible to support our new P & C executive with the organization of the event.
MORNING ROUTINES
A reminder that in the morning our routine is that students:
- Do not arrive at school prior to 8:00am and they are to be seated under D Block. Only students supervised by parents should be under E Block. There should be nobody under any other buildings or in other parts of the school.
- School staff provide supervision from 8:15am, when students will be allowed to move around under D Block and on the soft fall only. They may play handball, use the skipping ropes or sit with friends.
- At no time should students be playing with big balls (footballs, basketballs, soccerballs) or running around these areas.
- At the bell at 8:40am students should move to their class line up area and wait quietly in two lines for their teacher.
We thank parents who wait in the morning with their children for their cooperation with these expectations as they are in place to ensure everyone is supervised and safe.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson

Year 6
The Year 6 students have written a summary of the teaching and learning that is taking place in the classroom so far in Term 2;
English
This term in English our class has been reading the novel ‘Blabber Mouth,’ by Morris Gleitzman. We have been taking notes in class about character traits and the events of the story, and will later move on to studying language features, tone and mood. Further in the term, we will turn our notes into a speech and have a debate about whose novel is better with the other class, who have been reading the book ‘Boy Overboard,’ also by Morris Gleitzman.
Ellia S
This term in English 6A has been currently reading the novel “Blabber Mouth” by Morris Gleitzman. While 6B is reading the novel “Boy Over Board” also by Morris Gleitzman. After each chapter we have discussed the story as a class. Mrs Leeson and Mr Roxburgh have been really helpful at bringing the story to life and teaching us how to write a clear chapter summary. We are now at the stage where we can write chapter summaries for the remainder of the novel without their help. We are all looking forward to debating over which novel is better later in the term. We have been really enjoying this term in English and the subject area we are covering.

Maths
How many chocolate bars can you fit in a cardboard box?
Well, Year 6 could probably work that out if you had all the measurements of the box, because we have been learning about volume and capacity these past two weeks. The first task that we did with volume and capacity centred around construing 3D shapes in group. I personally liked this task because it involved a mixture of team work, problem solving and hands on work throughout the process of figuring out what the 3D net for each shape was, and included how to construct the shape from paper. Some other things that we are doing to improve our skills in working with volume and capacity consist of writing the formula in our books to help us remember them, and doing work which requires us to put each formula into action.

Science
In Year 6 Science this term, we are learning about electricity and energy through the unit, “ITS ELELTRICFYING”. So far, we have been learning all 6 types of energy and about simple electricity circuits. We recently did an experiment on electricity and created a simple circuit using a battery, wires and a light bulb. Our task was to make the light bulb light up in this investigation. We have also a homework task that required us to draw a diagram of what it looks like inside of a torch/ flashlight. I personally think that this term’s Science has been fun along with my friends and classmates.
Dominic N
This term in Science we are learning about different types of energy and how energy works for us. So far, we have looked at kinetic, light and heat energy and electrical energy. Our class has begun to draw and construct simple circuits as part of an
investigation on how torches work. As part of this process we have learnt that there are different symbols for different components in an electrical circuit such as light bulbs, switches and a power source. We are able to explain when a circuit is open or closed and that a circuit needs to be “complete” for it to work. In groups we attempted to make a circuit with wires, a light bulb and a power source, which for most people, worked. We look forward to diving deeper into this unit of work.

HASS
So far in HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) we have delved into understanding the formal rights and responsibilities of Australian citizens. We have learnt that as Australian Citizens our rights are;
- Belong to, and participate in, all aspects of Australian life.
- Vote in federal and state or territory elections, and in a referendum
- Apply for work in the Australian Public Service and the Australian Defence Force
- Seek election to parliament
- Apply for an Australian passport and re-enter Australia freely
- Receive help from Australian officials when overseas
We have also learnt that with rights of being Australian citizens comes responsibilities, which include;
- Obey the law
- Defend Australia should the need arise
- Serve on a jury, if called to do so (this point raised A LOT of discussion in class as we learnt more about what it means to be a jury member)
- vote in federal and state or territory elections, and in a referendum
We have also just begun learning about how experiences of citizenship changed for Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples during the 20th and 21st centuries. In the following weeks, we will eventually move on to how experiences of Australian citizenship changed for women in the 20th century and why migrant experiences of Australian democracy and citizenship changed during the 20th century.

What a start to Term 2, some brilliant results for some of our students here at Enoggera on the sporting field.
City District Cross Country
On Friday 30th April, 24 amazing Enoggera Students attended the City District Cross Country. In wet and difficult conditions, every single one of them finished the race and demonstrated wonderful team spirit.
Congratulations to Henry D and Ari M who finished in the top 8 in the 12 year boys and 10 year boys events respectively earning themselves a place in the City District Cross Country Team, to compete at the Met North Carnival on May 25th at St Pauls, Bald Hills. Special mention also goes to Avery P who also finished in the top 8 as well, in the 9 year old boys event, however, 9 year olds attend the City District Carnival in an invitational capacity with no progression to the Met North Carnival.

On top of those wonderful results – Enoggera won the ‘C Schools Division’ at the Cross Country, AND we also won the “Percentage Cup” across the entire competition.

At District Cross Country, Swimming and Athletics, schools are banded into A, B or C division based on the size of the school, with the C Schools being the smaller schools.
The Percentage Cup is award based on a calculation of points received (from placings) and number of students competing at the event – so effectively we got the highest number of points per student competitor.
Met North Football (Soccer) Selection
Congratulations goes to Tyler C who last Thursday was selected in the Met North Football (Soccer) Team to compete in the State Championships at Highfields, Toowoomba in late July. Well done!
City District Touch Selection
Congratulations also goes to Will P who was selected in the City District Touch Team on Friday. Great work Will!
Auskick
Our Prep to Year 2 Students all recently participated in a session with AFLQ staff preparing for Auskick, which will be kicking off at Enoggera on Friday 14th May after school. Information flyers were sent home with students involved last week with details of how to sign up.
District Sport Trials – Term 2:
At this time there are still a number of City District Team Sports Trials scheduled for Term 2. Depending on the sport, students born 2011, 2010 & 2009 may be able to trial for City District Teams and ultimately commence a Representative Pathway. This is an optional extra-curricular activity for students. It involves costs to parents in terms of trial fees, most trials are during the day with transport the responsibility of the parents, however, trials will also remain ‘Spectator Free’ environments – parents will need to drop off prior to the trials and return and pick up at completion of trials. If students are selected in a City District Team there will be additional costs including, uniforms, team levies, possibly some travel to larger venues around the city. There will also be additional training sessions. Parents and Students need to be fully aware of the commitment that will be needed if they consider trialling.
As a general guide, the student should be participating in club sport or tournaments of the particular sport for in excess of one year. Forms will be distributed by the HPE teacher if they are eligible to participate in trials. They will need to be completed by parents, signed off by the Principal and taken to the trial by the student, trail payments will need to be made via the City District School Shoponline all prior to the trial. School nominations will be submitted by the HPE teacher for those students who have been provided with forms. If your student does not wish to trial please, let me know ASAP after you have received forms and I will withdraw the school nomination.
For some sports a trial will be held at school to select those attending trials as our nomination numbers are limited. Students who have expressed an interest will be advised of trials when they arise, which will typically be during a lunch break or short period of class time. These trials will be supported by Education Queensland Staff who have experience in the nominated sports.
Please remember this is an opportunity at REPRESENTATIVE SPORT not an opportunity to try something new.
The upper school classes have all discussed with me the sports in which they participate outside of school and their interest in potentially participating in representative trials and their experience playing their sports, which helps in considering whether it is timely for them to be nominated or whether they should be waiting for another year.
Some additional information about the District is available on the City District Sports Page connected to the Metropolitan North Website. Feel free to check in on this site. https://metnorthschoolsport.eq.edu.au/district-sport/our-districts/city
As always if you have any questions relating to sport, please email me at jjard16@eq.edu.au and I will endeavour to answer them or find out the answers from the relevant group.

Mother’s Day Stall
A HUGE Thank You to our wonderful Volunteers who created a fantastic Mother’s Day Stall. A special thanks to Rachael Ali, Khesanh Brock and Naomi Dorland, the working group who have been working tirelessly for months organising, sourcing and packaging all the presents.
Thank you also to parents and children who made the stall a success! The new P & C Executive got to experience the excitement of the children, the children loved buying for their Mum’s! Hope you all had a wonderful day!

ESS 150thYear Celebration!
On Saturday, 28 August 2021 the school will be celebrating it’s 150th Year with a ‘good old’ family day from 11.00 am – 4.00 pm. Past and present students will be able to celebrate the day with rides, petting zoo, face painting, the launch of 150th Anniversary video, school tours, memorabilia display, old and new games, plant stall, second-hand book stall, homemade stall, raffles, food trucks, sausage sizzle and more!
Lots of volunteers will be needed to make this day successful! If you would like to contribute and join one of the many working groups (including Homemade stall; Book Stall; Raffles; Games) to help us get the day up and running, please contact Sian Gillinder, Secretary P & C (secretary@esspandc.com.au).
A volunteer sheet for helpers on the day will be sent out closer to the event.
Building Fund
We need your help to put a roof over our kid’s heads! Please help us build an all-weather outdoor space for our children. Currently the existing multi-purpose court is limited as it gets too hot during the hotter months and when it rains the children have limited space, especially at break time.
The P & C is continuing to work with the school to provide funding to construct a roof over the existing multi-purpose court. The planning phase is near complete and funds will be required over the coming weeks for building work to commence in the second half of 2021.
The fundraising goal for this project is $160,000. To date $118,000 has been raised from a combination of direct donations to the building fund, the Colour Run in 2020 and a wide range of other P & C fundraising activities since 2017. We thank everyone for the contribution and support to date!
We appreciate that not everyone will be in a position to do so, however if you can, Please help to reach the fundraising goal by making a donation to the school building fund
at: https://www.givenow.com.au/enoggerassbuildingfund
All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible, a receipt will be provided.
Uniform Shop
From Term 3 the Uniform Shop will be going Cashless, only EFT/ card payments will be accepted at the Uniform Shop on Tuesday mornings and orders can continue to be placed via the QKR! App.
Our Uniform Shop is open every Tuesday morning during school terms from 8.15 am.
The Uniform Shop accepts second-hand Enoggera State School uniforms in fair to good condition. Unfortunately we cannot accept items that are not official ESS supplies, it is suggested these are donated to your local charity shop.
School Banking day changes this week
Just a reminder our new banking day will commence this week, THURSDAY 13th MAY 2021
Please ensure that Dollarmites deposit wallets are now brought into school on Thursday mornings.
School banking will cease at the end of July following an Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC) Review of school banking programs that found there was limited value for children and that children were being exposed to sophisticated marketing tactics. We will continue with banking until then.
The Tuck Inn has been having fun celebrating flavours of the world every Wednesday, so far we’ve celebrated with delicious pleasing Pasta & Garlic Bread; heavenly Hotdogs and Brownies; and scrumptious Sushi . Next week’s flavour is Chinese Fried Rice with Spring Rolls.
Use the QKR! App to order for the Wednesday Special and all other Tuckshop items! The Tuckshop no longer accepts cash.
If you have any feedback on the Tuckshop menu please do not hesitate to contact Lynelle Blatchford (opsmanager@esspandc.com.au).

Containers for Change
Please help us fill up those Containers for Change bins at school (purple bins) with suitable containers for recycling. To check if your containers are eligible, check the back of the container for the 10c symbol (lids must also be removed). If you wish to visit the depot and deposit your own containers and contribute to the ESS scheme, our school scheme ID is C10051863.
