Our newest school member is Ernest Harvey Gallipoli Bear! Ernest was presented to our leaders by representatives from the Mitchie Day Club, as part of their Bears to Schools program. The Mitchie Day Club is a social club for veterans and local seniors, and they kindly chose ESS to donate a bear to because of our close ties with the Gaythorne RSL. Ernest has pride of place in the office, sitting proudly alongside the bear donated by Chappy Sarah last year after the Invictus Games.
One of our students recently entered a writing competition sponsored by Gaythorne RSL Tahlia took home the $200 second prize for her informative and descriptive essay about Australian Nurses who served overseas in World Ward 1. Great job Tahlia!
By the time you read this newsletter, we will have a lovely new garden around the Prep/1 playground. We have been the lucky recipients of a Mirvac Community day, in which Mirvac employees volunteer their time to help with a local community project. The project will include a rock swale, which will also double as an area for exploration, surrounded by approximately 300 plants. We cannot wait to see the students having fun in the finished play area!
Thank you to parents and students who have supported our Book Fair with lots of lovely books purchased. Thanks Mrs Green for organising and for all the staff who have assisted.
We have some very busy weeks coming up as we head into the end of the school year. Arts on Stage is for students who have been participating in extra curricula Arts activities, while all students are welcome to participate in our Carols’ Night, which will be held before the end of year Movie Night. Don’t forget our Principal’s Awards parade, where students from each class who have shown excellence in the three School Pillars of Learning, Relationships and Safety will be presented with certificates. There is also swimming carnival fun planned. Make sure you keep an eye on the school calendar.
Yours in Education

Just a reminder that completed Booklists need to be returned by 27th November to guarantee delivery prior to school starting next year. Booklists received after this date will also accrue a late delivery fee.
Prep 2020
This term we have welcomed our Prep 2020 cohort into our school as part of transitioning into the first formal year of school. It has been lovely to see so many new faces, wide eyed and eager, to begin their learning journey. Key messages communicated to support school readiness and success have included:
- Encouraging and developing a sense of independence
- Developing a Growth Mindset which encourages students to persevere with challenges or complications (as mistakes allow for true learning and build resilience).
- Fostering a love of reading through the 100 book challenge. (Parents and children have been asked to read 100 books prior to the start of prep)
I encourage all our current students to reflect on these messages and identify one message they would like to focus on for the final 4 weeks of school.

On Wednesday the 27th of November I will be hosting a farewell afternoon tea for our ADF families who are posting out or leaving Enoggera at the end of the year. Please let me know via email if you are able to attend. The lead up to a posting can be a stressful time for families and for students as they prepare to say goodbye to their friends and the uncertainty of starting at a new school. Please let me know if you have any concerns around this time for your child so I can support them at school and make the transition as smooth as possible.
Thank you to all of our Year 5 students and upcoming leaders who sold poppies last week in the lead up to and on Remembrance Day. They did a wonderful job and raised $130.00 which our school will donate to a service-related charity in the next few weeks.

PLAYGROUND AREA - MIRVAC COMMUNITY DAY
Very recently ESS was approved for a Mirvac Community day that sees Mirvac employees volunteer their time to help with a local community project. With a very tight timeline, it was decided that the area around the Prep playground could be a good project for a one day makeover.
The Community Day is scheduled for Wed 13 Nov, and preparations are well under way as you may well have seen on Monday and Tuesday.
The project will include a rock swale to mitigate the overland flow problems which will also double as an explorable landscape. Approximately 300 new plants, many of which have been selected for their sensory properties and pathways weaving between the trees.
This project is wholly funded, planned and managed by Mirvac and their suppliers, and we are very fortunate to have been selected for this project.
We hope you enjoy the end result!
EVENTS
The P&C are hosting an event to celebrate the end of year which will include student and staff performing carols, followed by a movie. Mark your calendars for Friday 29th November.
VIP beanbags are available to purchase via the Qkr app, get in quick before they all sell out.
From 4 pm, food trucks - Pizza Gal and Red Oriental will be onsite and ready to provide dinner for families. There will also be a food van from the movie provider with hotdogs and popcorn available for light refreshments.
Remember to bring you picnic rug, or camp chairs if you don’t hire beanbags, so you can relax with your family and friends at this much anticipated and engaging event. We look forward to seeing lots of families there to kick off the festive season.
2020 EVENT NOTIFICATION STEVE BIDDULPH RAISING BOYS/ GIRLS DISCUSSION EVENINGS
Steve Biddulph will be speaking at EPAC in late July 2020. Two sessions will run, one titled Raising Boys, and one titled Raising Girls.
Dates will be confirmed in the coming days and tickets will go on sale via www.stevebiddulp.com
Most of these discussion sessions sell out very quickly so if you are interested please keep checking the website for the tickets sale link. Tickets will be approx. $35pp. Only 400 tickets per event will be available. Tickets are available to the general public, not just the ESS community.
This is not a fundraising event, but a community information session for those interested. Proceeds from ticket sales go to Mr Biddulph.
Keep an eye on our Facebook page regarding updated date information and ticket links.
We are currency liaising with a Cyber Safety Educator/ Speaker and will have further information regarding that session in the near future. It is likely to run in May 2020.
TUCKSHOP
We hope students enjoyed the sushi option and we look forward to seeing it become more regular in 2020.
Thank you to everyone who has completed the Tuckshop survey. There were some common threads that emerged and we look forward to making the changes in response to the community feedback. We are currently working with our convenor to develop a nutritious menu with a variety of options that cater to our community's needs and wants.
Thank you to the team helping to develop this menu and our Convenor Rosetta, for her commitment to making the changes our community has called for. Stay tuned for the new menu options in 2020!
MULTI-PURPOURSE ROOF UPDATE
A project manager has been engaged to develop a scope of works for the project. We are hoping to submit a SSS Application in November as well as applying for a number of grants which have been identified. Thank you to the team of parents involved in getting this application ready, as well as Mrs Butler and the administration staff for their ongoing assistance and commitment to this project.
The P&C has already committed $70,000 to the project with an overall fundraising goal of $120,000 ahead of an expected construction start date of end 2020. You can help us get to our goal more quickly by making a tax deductible donation to our Building Fund via www.giveit.com.au or by letting us know of any companies or businesses which may be interested in sponsoring our project.
RECYCLING -CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
Our containers collection is still going strong! Thank you to those families who are regularly bringing their containers from home, every little bit helps.
The pilot scheme has now ended and our school was one of the top donators! Well done everyone. We have now enrolled in the ongoing scheme and will continue with the program.
Thank you to the staff and student volunteer helpers who keep this program running smoothly - especially those students who put their gloves on each week to ensure the bins are free of straws, bottle tops and other debris! Wonderful work!
Should you wish to still visit the depot you can use our ID number to donate to the P&C.
