Dear Parent and Caregivers,
ATTENDANCE
Recently the Leadership Team have been analysing our attendance data for this semester and even with the late start to school and COVID taken into account there are many students in our school who are falling behind or at risk of falling behind because they are not attending school regularly. Not only is there the risk to their education, but attending school less than 85% of the time can result in formal Departmental attendance processes being commenced. Therefore, it is timely to remind families of the DoE ‘Every Day Counts’ policy which can be read in full at this link, https://education.qld.gov.au/initiatives-and-strategies/initiatives/every-day-counts
As we analysed the data recently we have sent home attendance visual reports to students at risk and reminder letters to students attending less than 85% of the time.
INFRASTRUCTURE
It is great to see some visible progress on the new building with some walls going up this week for the lift and also with the roof on the new playground. Hopefully, if the weather stays fine we will continue to see the project move along. Practical completion is now looking at mid-November.
UNIFORM
A further reminder that our school uniform contributes greatly to the tone of the school and encourages students to take pride in the school and their appearance. It also ensures identification outside the school confines. Thus, to ensure student safety and to promote a high standard of dress at Enoggera State School, the School dress code applies to all students.
At Enoggera State School we have a very clear dress code which abides by the Education General Provisions Act (2006) and is approved by the P & C. It is expected that students wear their full uniform to school every day including the school shirt, shorts/skorts, black shoes, white socks and school hat. In cooler weather, students need to have blue jumpers/track pants or a school jacket only. At present we are seeing a lot of students wearing multi coloured jumpers. Therefore, we would appreciate your support in ensuring that your children come to school in correct uniform every day so that consequences do not need to be applied as per the approved dress code attached.
If you are struggling to provide the correct uniform, please contact the school as we may have some links to charities/organisations that could help.
READER’S CUP COMPETITION
This year we have entered a team of students into the Brisbane North Reader’s Cup Competition to be held at Kurwongbah State School on Thursday, June 9. Our team have been working hard this term to read the set texts and to work together as a team creating questions and quizzing each other on the texts. Mrs O’Malley and myself have been working with the team throughout to prepare them for tomorrow’s competition. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend tomorrow as I will be at the Principal’s Conference, but Mrs O’Malley and Mrs Burrows will attend to support the team in their first competition. Good luck to our team:
Evelene O’Donnell, Freya Phillips, Lara Armstrong, Sophie Hill and Sabrina Smith who are the team who will represent our school for the first time, at this reading competition. GO TEAM!
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
As mentioned, I will also be attending two days of Professional Development from 9-10th June in Brisbane, where I will be in attendance at the Qld Association of State Schools Principal’s Conference. Mrs Burrows will be Acting Principal in my absence for those two days.
Some of our Teacher Aides will also be attending a very important DoE conference on Saturday called “Lighting the Way” where they will partake in a range of workshops and keynote addresses.
Our Teachers as part of our regular Teaching Meetings also participated in some internal PD this week where they participated in a Showcase event to share the great work they have been doing with their classes around their Learning Walls in English. This is a priority of ours this year to support our students with their learning so that they can take ownership over their A-E grades in English. This way they are aware of what is required to achieve A, B and C grades on summative assessment tasks. As Mrs Burrows and I have been doing our observations it has been great to see our students engaging with the Learning Walls and being able to articulate what they need to do to get the A or B grades they are chasing.
END OF TERM EVENTS
With end of semester assessments and reporting coming to close by the end of week 9 we have a number of important events planned to close out the semester. These events include our Inter-house Athletics Carnivals for Snr students on Wednesday 22/6, and Jnr students on Thursday 23/6 at Mt Maria College fields and our Under 8’s Celebration on the last morning of the term on Friday 24/6 for students in Prep-2. Also, in that week we have our Principal’s Assembly on Monday 20/6 at 9am in EPAC. We have our Green Relationships Pillar Day to celebrate Chaplaincy where students can wear green for a gold coin donation on Wednesday, 15/6. Report Cards will be emailed home on the afternoon of Thursday, 23/6. Therefore, it is most important that- unless sick- students ensure they are at school every single day right to the end of term.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson

Deputy Principal Pen
Over the last few weeks, I have had the pleasure of visiting many classrooms to observe lessons and provide feedback to teachers as part of their Professional Development. As always, I continue to be impressed by the teaching and learning evident in our classrooms. The students are keen learners, engaged in learning tasks with interest and enthusiasm. I was able to see students working on writing descriptive sentences in Prep; recording of poetry on iPads in Year 1; learning the Jump Strategy in maths in Year 2; ICT skills by creating PowerPoint presentations in Year 3; creating traditional tales in Year 4; and designing of destination advertisements in Year 5/6. I am looking forward to seeing the finished product of the hard work that has been happening in all year levels. Well done to our teachers and students for their awesome work!
Pillar Practice
This fortnight for our Pillar Practice, we are focussing on being safe (Red Pillar) and being respectful (Green Pillar). Our focus this week is to keep our hands and feet to ourselves. Students are learning about their brain and how they might ‘flip their lid’ when big emotions take over their rational thinking and problem solving.

Students use their hand to represent their brain and learn that their ‘thinking brain’ (also called the upstairs brain) and their ‘emotional brain’(also called the downstairs brain). When the amygdala (thumb) takes over with big feelings then our thinking brain (fingers) is flipped and our emotional brain takes over! When this happens, students may resort to hitting and kicking to express their emotions rather than their words.
This continues to be problematic for both staff and delivery vans when parents park in the stop, drop and go lane rather than in a car park space before and after school. We kindly ask parents to park in available car park spaces rather than along the stop, drop and go zone to allow easier access for staff cars and delivery vans. The Stop, Drop and Go Zone should never be utilised for parking for the safety of our school community. Thanks for your understanding.

Our school Facebook page is a handy way to keep up to date with upcoming events! We encourage all of our parents to follow our page so you can enjoy the wonderful experiences our school has to offer. The more you interact with the page by liking and commenting on posts, the more our page will appear in your newsfeed. Messages and questions on our Facebook page can be overlooked, so this is not the quickest and most reliable way of getting clarification around school events. It is always best to ring the office or email the class teacher. We are currently adding events to the calendar, so be sure to check the events tab to see what is coming up in the last two weeks of the term. Thanks for your support of our Facebook page and for interacting on the page with respect and support.
Week 8 Assembly
We enjoyed a great school assembly this week with performances by the Junior Strings Ensemble (with Mrs Harle) and the Junior Choir (with Ms Hopper). Mrs Robinson acknowledge our Student Council’s Random Acts of Kindness Day with prizes and certificates given out to students for showing kindness and entering the draw! Mrs O’Malley shared the Student of the Week recipients and Mrs Burrows spoke about our Pillar Practice and ‘Flipping our Lid’. It was a very busy assembly with lots of celebrations of students and programs in our school. A reminder that parents are welcome to attend our assemblies on Mondays fortnightly from 2pm in the EPAC.

2A’s Newsletter
This Term in Science, 2A have been creating our very own toy factory! We have designed and made toys that can spin, or can be pushed and pulled. We have learnt that when we change the force applied to a toy, we can change the way it moves.
In English we have been writing character profiles for some famous fairy tale characters like Cinderella and the Big Bad Wolf. We have also been comparing traditional and alternate fairy tale characters and we are learning how to explain our own preferences.
It has been a fantastic Term in Year 2!
2B's Newsletter
We have been working hard this term and have really enjoyed learning different strategies to complete addition and subtraction equations.
We also really enjoyed the National Stimulus Storytime book, Family Tree. It led to lots of great discussions about who is in our family tree.
Senior Dance Ensemble
The 2022 Senior Dance Ensemble will make their debut performance at the Principal’s Assembly on Monday 20th June (EPAC) from 2pm. Students will need long black leggings (tights or track pants) and t-shirts will be provided.
The students have worked very hard, fronting up in all-weather on a Thursday morning at 8am to train. We look forward to sharing the lyrical group dance with the school community.

Paralympian Athlete Visit
Last week, they year 5 & 6 students were fortunate enough to be involved in a visit and workshop with two Paralympians, Monique Murphy (Swimmer) Monique Murphy | Paralympics Australia and Ella Sabljak (Basketballer) Ella Sabljak | Paralympics Australia.
Monique took the time to share her story with the students and there were lots of questions and answers. Students were curious about not only the day to day life of living with an impairment and the trials and difficulties experience, but also how their sport training and program work, their aspirations as athletes and even goal setting and ambitions.
Some big messages focused on resilience that we can all take into our own lives.
One of the biggest messages was no matter what is going on in your life the attitude of ‘YES I CAN’. Will help you achieve things you never thought possible. They shared this small video clip which is nothing if not inspiring. Rio Paralympics 2016 - Yes I can, I just born today, Yes I can do anything - YouTube
Students also experienced a number of activities which they completed using improvised impairments including:
- Goal Ball
- Seated Volleyball
- Seated Boccia
Discovering how difficult it is to play sport when you are blind or not being able to move freely using your legs challenged a lot of our students.
Met North Cross-Country
Congratulations to Ari who placed 5th at the Met North Cross-Country trials on Tuesday 7th June. He will now compete at the State Championships later in the year! All the best to Ari!
Track and Field Carnivals
Our School Track and Field Carnivals are scheduled for Week 10 of Term 2. Due to the ongoing construction at school we will be taking these events for the most part offsite. The Mt Maria Playing Fields at the end of Mott and Lade Streets in Enoggera will be our venue.
Junior Carnival – this is for Prep to year 2 students and will be held during the first two sessions of school on Thursday 23rd June. Permission forms have been sent home and are due to be returned to school with payment for bus by Friday 10th June, please make sure you have returned your permission form.
Senior Carnival – this if for student in year 3 – 6 and will be for the whole day on Wednesday 22nd June. Students will be walking with staff from Enoggera to Mt Maria on the day of this event. Permissions for this were included in the Cross Country Permissions from earlier in the year, however, there are a handful of students with this permission still outstanding and these will be chased up in the coming weeks. There will be some activities that will occur back at school prior to the carnival due to logistics and equipment – primarily high jump.
A single wet weather back up date has also been booked for Thursday 14th July – hopefully we won’t be needing this day.
Dates to Remember:
- Tuesday June 7th – Met North Cross Country (Postponed)
- Wednesday 22nd June – ESS Senior Track and Field Carnival
- Thursday 23rd June – ESS Junior Track and Field Carnival

Reporting Timelines and information
Semester 1 Report Cards will be distributed to parents via email on Thursday 23rd June. It is very important that you notify administration of any change of details via Admin@enoggerass.eq.edu.au
These documents provide information on your child’s demonstrated ability against year level achievement standards and their effort in each Subject. Students overall achievement marks are based on assessment tasks completed in Term 1 and Term 2. Reporting is measured against a 5 point scale for each juncture of learning.
Year level Teachers moderate at varying stages of the teaching and learning cycle to ensure consistency and calibrated judgements. It is important to remember that student grades may vary from semester to semester due to the aspects of curriculum standards being assessed and the way in which assessment is being demonstrated (for example, test, oral presentation). Should you have any questions around your child’s progress please contact their class teacher via email.
Important Reading Events 9 May – 26 August
Students are busily reading at home and at school for the Premier’s reading challenge. Students have been provided with a reading record sheet and can access more by asking their teacher or downloading at: https://readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au/register/Documents/school-reader-record-form.PDF
Book Week 2022 - August 20 – 26 (Term 3 Week 7)
The theme is about stepping into your own story and dreaming with your eyes open, listening to country as the first storyteller and learning from friends who help you on your way. Enoggera State school will have many fun activities available for students in the library during this week to celebrate the event. Our Book Week Parade will occur at the end of the week. We love seeing all the wonderful creative costumes! Further information will be provided in upcoming Newsletters. Please note the shortlisted books nominated for Picture Book of the Year below.
Environmental Learning at Enoggera
This term Year 3 and 4 have been investigating sustainable practices undertaken at Enoggera. Students have researched the processes involved in Composting and Recycling; the people responsible for running the practices and recognised the impacts and benefits that these environmental initiatives have on our personal, school and community health. Students have loved exploring the resources first hand!
Hello Enoggera State School Community and Defence Families,
FORTNIGHTLY DEFENCE KIDS HQ UPDATE
Last week was the best week of the month because we have an agreement that on the last Defence Club of each month, we can play cool maths game on the computers. This is always an exciting day and it is really heart-warming to watch the older students teaching the younger ones how to play. This week I whipped up a quick last-minute treasure hunt which lasted about 10 minutes and was lots of fun. Gabe loved it so much he spent the rest of lunch hiding tokens and I helped him write out the hiding spots for people to find. A very exciting moment during Defence Club was when Archie spotted a Tesla! I had no idea how many students were Tesla fans until everyone jumped up and ran to the window to see the infamous electric car (see photo below). Some of the special creations I saw this week (although there were many more) was Hudson’s fluffy bunny (top right) and Tom’s perler bead turtle (bottom right).
Defence Kids HQ is on every Thursday and Friday Big Lunch in D Block Art room.
