Dear Parent and Caregivers,
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Thank you to those parents and caregivers who were able to attend the Parent Teacher Interviews last night. Again, it was great to see the students as part of those conversations around their learning so that they can take more responsibility for their learning and engagement. This is part of the move toward making these interviews ‘3-way conferences’ where students are part of the conversation and actually have a part in sharing some of their work with their parents.
A big thank you to Mrs O’Malley who organised the evening and also to our fantastic teachers for giving up the evening so that we can offer this opportunity. It certainly makes a long day of it for staff who arrive at school at 7:30am or before and are then wrapping up interviews at 7:30pm, so we thank them very much.
It was also great to see the increase in bookings from this same interview round last year. We listened to the feedback last year and hope that by moving them closer to the beginning of the new semester it would serve as a more useful time for parents to talk about the recent report card, but to then project into the new semester and make goals for their child and their learning for Semester Two.
CHAPLAINCY
It was lovely for the Chaplaincy program to provide our staff with a lovely thank you hamper this week. Staff were very surprised to arrive at school on Monday to receive a hamper of goodies to get them through the semester. Thank you to Chappy Sarah, the Chaplaincy Committee and the City Lights Church, who organised the hampers and assisted to deliver them along with our School Captains and Pastor Andrew (pictured below). I am sure our staff greatly appreciated the thoughtful gifts.
INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATE
The building is really progressing now and we can actually see what it will be like when finished with the slab down and lots of scaffolding in place and work progressing on each level. It certainly is a hive of activity on every day and interesting to watch. It has become a new past time for some little boys as they gaze longingly into the construction area watching the big machinery, especially the cranes and big excavators.
The new playground is now complete and we are eagerly awaiting handover, hopefully this Friday. Whilst work is still progressing on the new concrete steps, we are pleased to have some access back around the front of the library from D Block and the second staircase to D Block has been returned to us also, for the time being.
We are currently working with some of the DoE suppliers of classroom furniture to come up with some designs for the furniture and effects to be purchased for the new building. Some of our teachers have also had some input into the start of this process. We are hoping to have our furniture ordered in the next few weeks so that it arrives before the end of the school year and after the building has been handed over to us.
SCHOOL OPINION SURVEYS
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted 18 July to 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5,6) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve. The Department of Education will commence sending email invitations to participants in the first week of term 3. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. Please ask at the office.
MATHEMATICS TOURNAMENT, CHESS COMPETITION AND WAKAKIRRI
Again, this semester as part of our priority to offer more extension activities and opportunities to our high achieving students as part of our Annual Implementation Plan, we have some events on offer.
Firstly, our Wakakirri team have been rehearsing hard under the direction of Mrs Wilcox, in readiness for the competition on August 11, at the Logan Entertainment Centre. We were treated to a snapshot of their performance on assembly this week which went down at treat with the students. We look forward to them all doing well when they hit the stage in week 5. A big thank you to Mrs Wilcox and her team as well as parents who have been helping with costumes, sets etc.
Also, this term we once again have been invited to participate in the Brisbane North Maths Tournament at Albany Creek State School. Last year we participated for the first time so we look forward to building on our initial showing, as we have some Yr 6 students who attended last year in Yr 5. Mrs Burrows and Mrs Hall will be working with our chosen mathematicians to prepare them for the day.
And finally, we have a new opportunity on the table and that is a school Chess tournament to be held at St Dympna’s Primary School at Zillmere on 9th September for students in Divisions-Prep-2 and Yr 3-6. We had many students showing an interest by attending the lunch time Chess Club with Mr Taylour and students who also attend the Chess Mate chess lessons at the Emmanuel Church next door each week. Mr Taylour will be sending home invitations to interested students to represent their school and participate in the competition shortly.
ENVIRONMENTAL FOCUS
Our environmental committee and student environmental and sustainability club have been very active again this year as part of our AnnuaI Implementation Plan commitment to: “Investigate ways to include an environmental focus across the curriculum as part of the Sustainability General Capability”. So far, they have been working hard on the recycling program and the worm farms. We were lucky enough to get a grant from the Organic Waste Smart Schools program to purchase the worm farm tumblers and equipment and to set up the collection of food scraps for the worms. Now this is up and running and the students are doing a great job with the collecting and delivering of the craps they have moved to fine tuning the rest of the waste and recycling processes within the school. Mrs Kent was lucky enough to also apply for and win another grant from Tim Mander MLA from the Everton Environmental Sustainability Grant for this, which was used to purchase a range of coloured bins so that the students are now recycling soft plastics, general waste, containers for change and paper/cardboard. The students are also doing a great job as they learn where to put the various waste products each day.

NATIONAL CONDITION COLLECTION OF DATA (NCCD) ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognize the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.dese.gov.au/about-us/resources/department-education-skills-and-employment-complete-privacy-policy-0).
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
TERM THREE OPEN DAY
A reminder that we have set the date for our next OPEN DAY for prospective 2023 families. This Open Day will be on Wednesday August 3, commencing at 9am with a presentation in EPAC again and then going on a tour of the facilities. Following that Open Day we will commence our Prep Transition program with Enrolment Interviews for 2023 Prep Students in the final two weeks of the term from September 5 to September 16. These will be able to be booked through the SOBS system and information will go out to enrolled families and in our newsletter prior to the bookings opening. Please pass on this information to families who are looking at our school for 2023 whether in-catchment enrolments or intending to apply for an out-of-catchment placement, if available.
SAFETY TO AND FROM SCHOOL
All types of travel have inherent risks. Regardless of how any of us travel, it is important we are mindful of the potential risks and manage them to avoid incident and injuries. With the increasing use of rideables such as electric scooters, skateboards and bikes, ensuring the safety of our staff, students and pedestrians is essential.
A reminder that Queensland Road Rules apply to e-scooters and e-bikes and anyone who scoots rides or skates to and from school should:
- Wear protective gear and a helmet, which is mandatory if riding an electric scooter or skateboard
- Give way by ringing your bell when approaching pedestrians and overtaking on the right
- Travel at the appropriate and safe speed for the environment in which you are travelling
- Be respectful to pedestrians and other path uses and keep out of their way
- Adhere to road rules when riding an e=scooter
- Park responsibly to void becoming an obstacle or risk for others
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson
Principal
Deputy Principal Pen
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope that all members of our school community had a relaxing holiday with their families. It is hard to believe that half the year has gone by already with our students demonstrating great achievements in their learning journey! The great teaching and learning will continue into Term 3 with some exciting units of work including report writing; story innovations; and persuasive writing. I look forward to sharing work with students from across the school.
Pillar Practice
This fortnight for our Pillar Practice, we are focussing on being a responsible learner (Blue Pillar) by putting our hand up to speak; listening carefully; following instructions the first time; attempting our work and minimising disruptive chatter. It is important for parents to be aware of the School Pillar we are practising so that you can encourage your children to reflect on the school expectations and reinforce them through discussions at home.
Our school Facebook page is a handy way to keep up to date with upcoming events! We encourage all of our parents to follow our page so you can enjoy the wonderful experiences our school has to offer. The more you interact with the page by liking and commenting on posts, the more our page will appear in your newsfeed. Messages and questions on our Facebook page can be overlooked, so this is not the quickest and most reliable way of getting clarification around school events. It is always best to ring the office or email the class teacher. We continue to add events to the calendar, so be sure to check the events tab to see what is coming up in the term ahead. Thanks for your support of our Facebook page and for interacting on the page with respect and support.
Week 2 Assembly
We enjoyed a great school assembly this week with a min- preview performances by students participating in Wakakirri this year. Mrs O’Malley shared the Student of the Week recipients and Mrs McKenzie spoke about our Pillar Practice and the Zones of Regulation. A reminder that parents are welcome to attend our assemblies on Mondays fortnightly from 2pm in the EPAC.
100 Days of Prep
Coming up on Friday 29th July, we are celebrating a very important day. Taking into account school closures due to COVID and flooding, the prep teachers have calculated that this will be the 100th Day of Prep! Mrs Nelson, Mrs Egerton and Miss Enoch will be celebrating this very special milestone with our preppies. It has been wonderful to watch our preppies settle into school routines and learn how to read and write! I know we all appreciate the wonderful job that the Prep Teachers and teacher aides do with our youngest members of the school!
Clubs and Activities
This year saw the introduction of Lunchtime Clubs and Activities as opportunities for our students to pursue areas of interest both inside and outside classrooms. This was also providing additional options for our students during construction of our new building and the loss of many play spaces. This program has proven to be a huge success with students across the school. This semester, the Clubs and Activities roster has been updated with some returning favourites and some new additions. There are laminated copies of the Clubs and Activities Roster under buildings for students to refer to at break times as well as copies in classrooms so students know what clubs are on offer each day. Some of our new clubs include: Lego Club with Mrs Harris; Water Painting Club with Mrs Osborne; Mindful Colouring club with Mrs Finlayson; Play Doh Club with Chappy Sarah; Netball Club with Mrs Taddeo; Basketball Club with Mr Woodrick and Origami Club with Mrs Hall.
Also, Mrs Moeser is running a “Teddy Bear’s Picnic Club” to be held on the front lawn of the school at first break on Thursday. Students are permitted to bring a small teddy bear to school and sit on the front lawn of the school in front of the administration block in the sunshine with Teddy Bears after eating time. They can take food with them if they are still eating. There will be a range of books for the students to access as well. If any parents have an old picnic blanket or teddy bear they would like to donate, for the students to sit on and take for their picnic, please provide them to the office. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.
Didjeribone
As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, last Friday our students attended a Didjeribone Performance by Tjupurru. Using the didjeribone, face bass and cutting edge music production equipment, Tjupurru creates uniquely Australian music with a rich, multilayered soundscape. It was an incredible music and cultural experience for our school! For the finale of the show, six students were invited onto the stage to form a human instrument played by a senior student! It was an ideal ending to this astounding show! You can see a video of his performance on our Facebook page.
Zones of Regulation
Students across our school have been engaging in activities and learning around the ‘Zones of Regulation’ Program.
This a program that develops awareness of feelings, energy and alertness levels while exploring a variety of tools and strategies for regulation, prosocial skills, self-care, and overall wellness. This curriculum provides us an easy way to think and talk about how we feel on the inside and sort these feelings into four coloured Zones, all of which are expected in life. Once we understand our feelings and zones, we can learn to use tools/strategies to manage our different Zones in order to meet goals like doing schoolwork or other tasks, managing big feelings, and healthy relationships with others. The simple, common language and visual structure of The Zones of Regulation helps make the complex skill of regulation more concrete for learners and those who support them. Last term, the students were learning about the four different coloured zones and now we are moving on to understanding things and events that ‘trigger’ us and place us in these zones. This will be followed by learning self-regulation skills that students will be able to use to help them to manage in each of these zones.
Student Council
As mentioned last term, the Student Council will be rolling out a fundraiser this term to raise money for their Legacy Project. The students have chosen to launch the ‘Picture Products’ fundraiser. Further information will be emailed out this week with regards to how to go about preparing your own artistic drawings that can be printed onto various products (still to be confirmed) for you to keep or give to family and friends as gifts! Thanks in advance for your support of this fundraiser.
Morning Routines
A friendly reminder that all students are to be waiting under D Block before school unless they are with a parent. Students in the care of their own parent are permitted to wait under E Block. For duty of care, all other areas are out of bounds as they are not supervised before school. When students are waiting with parents, it is important that are expected to remain seated and to not run around playing, to keep our ‘before school expectations’ consistent for all students. Thanks for your assistance with our morning routines.

Year 4 News
Welcome to Term Three. Our most exciting and engaging unit last semester was Technology. The year 4 students have investigated how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a product and in doing so have made a pinball machine.

The students have applied processes and production skills to:
- investigate the materials and technologies they needed to make the machine
- generated and refined design ideas for their pinball machine
- produced a pinball machine that met their design brief
- evaluated their design and production processes
The students have enjoyed the process very much and together with their parents have produced some excellent Pinball machines as evidenced in our photos. They have been able to design, create and reflect on the process admirably.
Aside from Technology, we have had a strong learning focus on our Reading and Spelling programs which are proving to be fantastic. The students are involved three times a week in reading and their classroom teacher teaches the explicit strategies required to be a literate student. We concluded our History unit which looked at pre and post first Australian contacts throughout history and lifecycles for science.
This semester we will launch into Rowan of Rin for English, HASS which includes Geography, materials and their properties in Science together with Drama, Music and LOTE. So far it has been a productive and positive year which we are all embracing.
The Year 4 teachers.

Year 2- Instrumental Music Recruitment 2023
This term the Year 2s will be commencing the process for finding out the next String program recruits for 2023.
The process includes undergoing a aural listening test during Classroom Music, an Expression of Interest feedback form, consultation and feedback from the classroom teacher and inspection of Semester 1 Classroom and Music results.
If there are any questions please forward these to Ms Hopper mxhop2@eq.edu.au or Mrs Harle (Strings teacher) mehar0@eq.edu.au
The Year 2s completed a unit about Instruments of the Orchestra in Term 2 so are familiar with the Instruments available in the Strings program.
It may be beneficial to have a conversation at home about if your child has an interest in playing Violin, Viola or Cello and also the commitment learning an instrument takes.
Please note there are always limited places available, often less than demand so places unfortunately cannot always be offered to everyone who is interested.

Senior students are partaking in the VEX IQ Term Challenge. They have formed groups to complete a weekly robotics challenge in 20 minutes. Teams earn points by solving part or all of the weekly problem. This week’s challenge was to have the robot play Happy Birthday while delivering a dance. Well done to the Terrific Techos who not only scored their 100 points but ended up with 50 bonus points for coding the entire song! At the end of term, the winning team will receive a tuck shop voucher. Good luck teams.

Sustainability

The worms have begun to transform the food scraps into beautiful rich soil and it is amazing to watch the student’s beginning to become excited about the project and work independently on caring for the worms.
This week we will be move some of the worms into the second tier of the farms. As the remaining worms finish eating the food in the first layer they will make their way into the second layer. Once that happens we can tip the soil or casting into the garden. Here is a before (left) and after (right) of our soil- looking much more homogenous!
Containers for Change:
Containers for Change is up and running families. Please donate your containers and help your little ones understand how to recycle their containers to raise money for special resources in our school.
Purple wheelie bins are located in all the student eating areas for your convenience.
Soft Plastics.
We are now recycling “Soft Plastics”. Chip packets, cling wrap, clip seal bags, anything that can be scrunched up and will stay in a bit of a ball. The only soft plastic that cannot be recycled is the black coloured packages. All soft plastics are returned to Coles and Woolworths – they have a collection bin at the front of the stores.
