Dear Parent and Caregivers,
STAFFING
We are continuing to manage lots of staff and student absences at present due to COVID and Influenza. As this means that our teachers are away for at least 7 days each at a time, we are relying heavily on supply teachers to be available to run classes each day. We have been lucky in that we have mostly been able to cover staff absences, but have had some days where support staff, specialist teachers or leaders are taking classes. We are thankful that in most instances our teachers are able to provide detailed planning for relief staff to ensure that classes can run as planned with minimal impact on student learning. We thank you for your support and understanding during these trying times.
In other staffing news we welcome back School’s Officer, Colin Callaghan to an increase in work load to 4hrs a day on his new Return to Work plan, as an over allocation. He will continue to work along side Tane Goffe for the rest of this term.
INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATE
We are still awaiting the handover of the new playground as it was awaiting further plumbing and draining works, but are hopeful that at his Friday’s steering meeting we will get the sign off. I know that the students are very keen to try out the Ninja style playground following the recent series on TV. We will most likely let the Yr3/4 students have it and the oval at one break and the Yr5/6 students the multi-purpose court and then swap over at the next break to allow everyone a fair go to try out the new equipment.
SCHOOL OPINION SURVEYS
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted 18 July to 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5,6) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve. The Department of Education will commence sending email invitations to participants in the first week of term 3. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. Please ask at the office.
MATHEMATICS TOURNAMENT, CHESS COMPETITION AND WAKAKIRRI
We have chosen our Maths Tournament representatives from Yr 5 and 6 to compete at the Brisbane North Maths Tournament at Albany Hills State School and letters will go home next week to these students.
Our Wakakirri team will have their dress rehearsal on Sunday and head off to the competition next week on Thursday to the Logan Entertainment Centre to compete. We wish them all the best of luck and hope they thoroughly enjoy the experience and make memories to last a life time.
And finally, we have a new opportunity on the table and that is a school Chess tournament to be held at St Dympna’s Primary School at Zillmere on 9th September for students in Divisions-Prep-2 and Yr 3-6. We had many students showing an interest by attending the lunch time Chess Club with Mr Taylour and students who also attend the Chess Mate chess lessons at the Emmanuel Church next door each week. Mr Taylour will be sending home invitations to interested students to represent their school and participate in the competition shortly.
DISTRICT ATHLETICS
Congratulations to those 23 students who attended the City District Athletics Carnival on Monday and Tuesday this week. As usual our students represented their school with pride and did their best in all of their events. Congratulations to these students who were successful in being selected to go through to the Metropolitan North Carnivals. They were Chelsea O’Hara (Shot Put), Ari Mauchlin (1500m) and Avery Pocock (Long Jump). A big thank you to Mrs Jardine for all of her organisation around selecting and organising for students to attend and also to Mrs Fitzpatrick who went as our team manager for the two days and also to Mr Roxburgh and Mr Woodrick who attended as officials. It is a massive job to take a large athletics team away and there is much organisation that goes on behind the scenes so we thank everyone for making this event happen.
Just today we have been notified that we were pipped at the post this year from winning the C Schools trophy which we have won quite regularly in recent years. Wooloowin SS won it this year with Enoggera SS 2nd and Newmarket 3rd. This trophy is worked out as a percentage of points scored at the carnival and divided by student enrolments.
NATIONAL CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA (NCCD) ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognize the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.dese.gov.au/about-us/resources/department-education-skills-and-employment-complete-privacy-policy-0).
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
OPEN DAY AND PREP ENROLMENTS
This week we held our final Open Day for this year as we now move to focussing on finalising enrolments ready for the transition and information sessions next term. All enrolments need to be into the office by 2/9/22 so that they can be entered into the system ready for enrolment interviews to be held during the last two weeks of term from 5-16/9/22. These meetings are where we go through the enrolment process and collect information re the child and their needs for class placements for 2023.
Enrolment interviews will be able to be booked through the SOBS system and information will go out to enrolled families and in our newsletter prior to the bookings opening. Please pass on this information to families who are looking at our school for 2023 whether in-catchment enrolments or intending to apply for an out-of-catchment placement, if available.
DATA CONVERSATIONS
Following on from the Semester One reporting period and our very successful parent teacher interviews, Mrs Burrows and I are currently conducting Data Conversations with our class teachers to unpack their Semester One A-E and other data and talk through what high impact pedagogical strategies they can implement in their classrooms to continue to lift our students A-E results further this semester.
These meetings look at where students have progressed from in 2021 to this last semester and set targets for where they hope to get them to this semester and what strategies might be useful to assist groups of students achieve their targets. Our Learning Walls have been one of these high impact strategies we have implemented thus far and we are pleased to see students now using the walls more to support them to understand what they need to demonstrate to achieve the higher grades on their summative assessment tasks.
We know that our school traditionally performs very well and in fact last semester we were celebrated in the region for being 1 of 2 schools who had the overall P-2 data showing over 90% of students in Prep -2 were achieving A-C grades, which was very pleasing. This year, working in consultation with our Assistant Regional Director, we have set targets for our school as compared to like schools based on ICSEA (Index of Community and Social Economic Advantage) to continue to move more of our A-C graded students into the A-B grades. In the table below you can see our A-E English results from last year and the targets set for this year against where we are after Semester One. This data is also pleasing to see that the strategies we are implementing are working to achieve our targets in almost all year levels.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson
Principal
Deputy Principal Pen
The start to this term has been quite difficult with yet another wave of COVID impacting on us all! However, we are continuing to work hard to make sure this term runs as smoothly as possible!

Next week, school is closed for the EKKA Public Holiday on Wednesday 10th August. The following day, Mrs Wilcox, Mrs Kerr and Mrs Hall will be taking some of our Year 4-6 students to perform in Wakakirri on Thursday 11th August. We wish them the best of luck for their performance. Year 5/6 Students will also be participating in a ‘Talk Money’ Workshop with the second workshop being on August 26th. In Week 6, we celebrate Science Week with lunch time science activities being organised and a science show called “Breaking Point” for students on Friday 19th July. Finally, a reminder that Book Week is coming up in Week 7 – with our Book Week Parade on Friday 26th July at 9am.
Pillar Practice
This fortnight for our Pillar Practice, we are focusing on ‘Being Respectful’ (Green Pillar) by thinking before we speak and being kind to others. It is important for parents to be aware of the School Pillar we are practicing so that you can encourage your children to reflect on the school expectations and reinforce them through discussions at home. The story, “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud is a great book to share with children to highlight this message about being kind. There is a link to this story that you may like to watch together with your children to encourage them to be ‘Bucket Fillers’.
Our school Facebook page is a handy way to keep up to date with upcoming events! We encourage all of our parents to follow our page so you can enjoy the wonderful experiences our school has to offer. The more you interact with the page by liking and commenting on posts, the more our page will appear in your newsfeed. Messages and questions on our Facebook page can be overlooked, so this is not the quickest and most reliable way of getting clarification around school events. It is always best to ring the office or email the class teacher. We continue to add events to the calendar, so be sure to check the events tab to see what is coming up in the term ahead. Thanks for your support of our Facebook page and for interacting on the page with respect and support.
Zones of Regulation
Students across our school have been engaging in activities and learning around the ‘Zones of Regulation’ Program.
This a program that develops awareness of feelings, energy and alertness levels while exploring a variety of tools and strategies for regulation, prosocial skills, self-care, and overall wellness. This curriculum provides us an easy way to think and talk about how we feel on the inside and sort these feelings into four coloured Zones, all of which are expected in life. Once we understand our feelings and zones, we can learn to use tools/strategies to manage our different Zones in order to meet goals like doing schoolwork or other tasks, managing big feelings, and healthy relationships with others. The simple, common language and visual structure of The Zones of Regulation helps make the complex skill of regulation more concrete for learners and those who support them. Last term, the students were learning about the four different coloured zones and now we are moving on to understanding things and events that ‘trigger’ us and place us in these zones. As they learn about triggers, they will also learn about self-regulation skills that students will be able to use to help them to manage in each of these zones.
Student Council
The Student Council is running a Pictureproducts melamine plate activity and we'd love you to join in. Your child's unique artwork is transformed into durable, high-quality melamine Pictureplates that will last a lifetime.
Both decorative and useful, Pictureplates are simply beautiful. Children love eating off their very own Pictureplates, and as the years go by and they grow up and have their own families, their Pictureplates will bring back memories of those happy childhood years.
Your child can use markers, paints and handprints to create their artworks, and you can have as many copies made as you'd like, so it's a fantastic gift idea for grandparents and other family members.
We are also offering a range of other products decorated with your child's artwork, such as the functional and beautiful Pictureclocks, plastic or ceramic mugs, water bottles, tote bags and calendars. You have been provided with one or two templates, but the others can be easily downloaded following the link below.
How to get involved
- Look at the attached Leaflet and choose which products, and how many of each, you'd like to order. Fill out the order form at the end of this letter and return it to the Class Teacher.
- Pay for your order online at https://pay.pictureproducts.com/ENOCOO/90868/ by Friday 19th
- Order Forms and art work templates are due in by Friday 19th August to your Class Teacher.
- Create your artworks at home with pens, paint, stickers, fingers and feet on the template provided (Clock and Plate) or download the other product templates —the brighter the better!
Download the special drawing templates for the other products you'd like to order from www.pictureproducts.com.au/drawing/ and print it out. The paper should be printed at A3 size. If you don't have an A3 printer, print shops and Officeworks can do this for you. If you print at A4, your products can still be made but the drawings will be scaled up.
- Return your drawings to your child’s Class Teacher when complete.
- Drawings and order forms are due in to your child’s Class Teacher by Friday 19th

Morning Routines
A friendly reminder that all students are to be waiting under D Block before school unless they are with a parent. Students in the care of their own parent are permitted to wait under E Block. For duty of care, all other areas are out of bounds as they are not supervised before school. When students are waiting with parents, it is important that are expected to remain seated and to not run around playing, to keep our ‘before school expectations’ consistent for all students. Thanks for your assistance with our morning routines.

Year 5/6 News
Year 5 and 6 students have been looking closely at our world in Science and HASS. While investigating natural disasters' effect on our planet, the Earth, students have engaged in activities to explore the movement of tectonic plates. Like a giant jigsaw puzzle on the Earth's crust, students had to piece together the plates to discover the fault lines and how movement along these create earthquakes.
The 5's and 6's have also been exploring our world in geography by using lines of latitude and longitude to record absolute locations of cities. They constructed model globes using balloons and recorded the major lines of latitude and meridians of longitude, along with their location in degrees. They will continue to investigate and compare the human and environmental characteristics of Australia to other countries.
City District Track and Field Carnivals
A number of students participated in the City District Track and Field Carnival on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd August. Being able to participate in this event was a little special – there has not been a full City District Track and Field Carnival since 2018. The 2019 Carnival was modified due to the National Championships that year being held in Darwin – nominations were made on paper and the competitors participated in a combined Regional/District Qualifying event. The 2020 and 2021 Carnivals were both cancelled, another casualty of the Covid Pandemic.
So, well done to each and everyone, there were some very impressive results – the full results schedule will be shared with the participants when it is received from the City District Convenor.
Special mention goes to Avery, Chelsea and Ari who managed to secure a spot in the City District Team and will now be competing at the Met North Carnival on Wednesday 24th August or Thursday 25th August at UQ Sports Athletics Centre, St Lucia. All the very best at your next competition.
To be selected in the City District Team these students had to place in the top 4 of their events at the carnival earlier this week.
We also had one student compete in an event known as the ‘Tetra’. This is a multi-event where the student needed to qualify and compete in the 100m, 800m, shot put and long jump. The combined results from these 4 events are calculated to work out the winners. Congratulations to Neve who not only participated in this event but placed third. Sadly, this does not allow Neve to progress to the City District Team because for this event, only the top two places receive a position in the team.
Thanks to Mrs Fitzpatrick who managed the team at the event, helping everyone be where they needed to be at the right time. Also thank you for taking on the thankless job of washing all those Track and Field Singlets.
To Mr Woodrick and Mr Roxburgh, I really appreciate you jumping on board and going to the carnival in my absence and taking on whatever role was required of you on the day. Thank you.
Volleyball Cup
The Annual Primary Schools Cup will be held at Craigslea State High School on Thursday 1st September. Students from year 5 & 6 have nominated their interest in participating in this team and permission forms are being sent home with them this week. Please ensure that you complete the forms and return it to your class teachers as soon as possible to assist with finalising participant numbers.
Interschool Sport
Gala Days are being planned for City District Schools for three Fridays in early term 4. Preparation with Year 5 & 6 students and staff are underway to get teams organised for these days. Students will either participate in Touch Football or T20 (Cricket).
Permission forms and invoices will be sent home over the next week or so for this.
Plans are also underway for the year 3 & 4 classes to participate in skill development programs at school on the same three Fridays that the senior students are participating in Gala sports. Further information will be sent home as these plans evolve.
Dates to Remember:
- Wednesday 24th August – Met North Track and Field Carnival
- Thursday 1st September – Volleyball Cup

Digital Technologies
Our Preps are learning to sign in and out of the school network with their unique user names. They are doing a fabulous job too! In Prep, we sill spend this term learning on the PCs before moving onto working with an iPad. Students are enjoying learning how to navigate a mouse and use basic block code to create algorithms. A number of Prep students have been attending the Robotics and Coding Clubs too, way to go Preps!
Here’s a link to the online site we are using in class (mouse skills and block code).
