Dear Parent and Caregivers,
LEARNING CURVE
This week our Learning Curve program is from the ‘Growth Learning Approach’ category and the wellbeing skill builder is called ‘getting things done’ for the lower school and ‘creating idea maps’ in the upper school, who have the diaries this year.
The Prep-2 lessons are about how we can help to get ourselves more organised: by being clear on things that are ‘must dos’ such as feeding your pet, cleaning your room, going to school and doing your homework; and other things that are your choice and ‘maybe do’ activities such as watching tv, playing on your ipad or playing with friends. When you can get your ‘must dos’ done and have some time for ‘maybe do’ activities you will proud of yourself for being so organised.
For the Year 3-6 students the focus is about understanding that much of what you learn is through your eyes and about learning how to look at the big picture from all perspectives by creating idea maps or mind maps. These are a tool for students to use both sides of your brain to connect ideas and sometimes energise their thinking because they are creating a visual pattern for their brain.
These concepts were introduced on assembly this week and are being taught in the Health lessons with Miss Dunstan and followed up in classrooms. Our Year 3-6 students continue to track their progress in their Learning Curve diaries. The parent newsletter is attached below.

INFRASTRUCTURE
It was great to see the new fence installed to the front of the school over the holidays. Not only has this given the front of the school a facelift but it adds to the security of the site. We look forward to getting more of this fencing installed around the school site in coming years.
It was also great to see the refurbishment works in IB and C Block completed with the final defects meeting set for next week to close out the project. The new operable walls were installed as well as the autex walls, notice boards and new classroom doors. We only have A Block (Prep B and 3C and the Admin) that have not been refurbished now. We look forward to getting on the program again for this project in the near future.
PREP OPEN DAY
This week on Friday morning from 9-11am we will hold our first Open Day for this year for families who are looking to enrol here for 2026 either in Prep or other year levels. The morning will commence with a presentation in EPAC with a Q and A at the end and then a tour of the facilities following. We will hold another Open Day in Term 3 before our Prep Enrolment Interviews at the end of Term 3 and then the Prep Transition and Information sessions in Term 4.
If you know of families who live in our catchment and are hoping to come here next year, please let them know of the Open Days coming up. Families who have made their decision, can drop in enrolments forms to the office at any stage to enable us to get them on the system and into the communication channels for next year.
ANZAC DAY AND SERVICE
Thank you to those who attended our school ANZAC Service on Thursday 24 April and also came to the Gaythorne March on 25 April. As usual, it was wonderful to see so much support for our school service through the attendance of our Special Guests, Lachlan Bird representing MP Tim Mander, parent, Warrant Officer Mathew McDonald and ex Chaplain Twinkee Polius. Our students were very respectful during the service which is credit to their families and teachers.
It was also a credit to Mrs Rees as to the quality of the Choir performance of ‘Lest We Forget’. Thank you to Mrs Burrows for coordinating the ceremony, particularly under trying circumstances when we had to make a last-minute change of venue to the EPAC and the stress this caused. But whilst the atmosphere was not quite as it is at the front of the school, it was still a very moving and respectful ceremony.
A reminder to take a look at our brand-new Lone Pine which was planted in the front garden by our Defence Students and school captains as part of our ANZAC Day activities.
QASSP PRINCIPAL’S CONFERENCE
Coming up in Week 4 both Mrs Burrows and I will be attending the Qld Association of State School Principals’ Conference in Brisbane on May 12-14. Mrs O’Malley will be Officer in Charge whilst we are off-site at the conference.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson
Principal

WELCOME BACK
I hope that everyone enjoyed a relaxing Easter Break! It has been a busy start to Term Two and lots of learning and events to look forward to as the term progresses.

In trying to be helpful, some students or parents are once again using a rock from the front garden to hold back the front gate on South Pine Road leaving it wide open! Please ensure that you keep our front gate closed at all times. Thanks for your help with this.
Our school has a very active Facebook page with frequent posts to keep our school community informed of what is happening in our school. Our events are posted throughout the term to allow parents time to be prepared for the term ahead. To find our events, simply click on the more tab and then the events tab in the dropdown menu to go to our events.
Dates for Term Two events have been posted on Facebook to help you plan ahead for Term Two.
If you have a Facebook page, we encourage all of our parents to follow our school page so you can enjoy the wonderful experiences our school has to offer. The more you interact with the page by liking and commenting on posts, the more our page will appear in your newsfeed. A reminder that Facebook is not the best platform to ask questions that you need immediate or urgent replies to, as we don’t always see questions in the comment sections of a post. This is best done by emailing the teacher/admin or calling the office. Facebook is also not a site for posting complaints or negative comments about staff or school processes.
If you have some constructive feedback for the school or an issue that you would like to raise, we would respectfully ask that you make an appointment to speak with the Principal to discuss your concerns. Any inappropriate comments will be removed from the platform. Please remember to never make comments on the page referencing a child’s name for privacy reasons.

Stop, Drop and Go
A friendly reminder to parents that to ensure the Stop, Drop and Go Zone at South Pine Road (in the car park) is successful, it is essential that drivers proceed all the way to the first gate closest to the library. Parents are unable to leave their vehicles in this area to walk their students into under the buildings as it causes congestion to the flow of traffic and becomes a safety issue. Please do not drop your students at the first gate either as this causes cars to have to go around your vehicle and again causes issues with the traffic flow. This gate is locked in the mornings for safety after 8:15am. Thanks for your support with our safe drop-off.
The expectation is the same for Laurel St Stop, Drop and Go. Please do not park in this zone and leave your vehicle as it doesn’t allow for the traffic to flow. It is important to continually move your car to the front of the zone to allow cars to move in behind you. Our staff are working hard to ensure the safety of our students as they leave the school grounds and we appreciate your support with this by following our pick-up and drop-off processes.
Pillar PracticeOur three school pillars include Safety (Be Safe); Relationships (Be Respectful); and Learning (Be a Responsible Learner). Each fortnight at Assembly, a Pillar Practice is shared with staff and students that becomes our focus behaviour improvement. This fortnight, our Pillar Practice is around showing respect to all staff.
All class teachers are provided with a poster for their classroom and will explicitly teach our school expectations around the relevant pillar and behaviour. Students are reminded daily about our focus behaviour with the goal of improving this behaviour across the school. Special RESPECT gotchas are being handed out to students over the coming fortnight to support the Pillar Practice. You can support us by being aware of the current Pillar Practice and discussing the expectations with your children at home.
MSP School Photo Day
A reminder that the School Photo Day is coming up on Friday 16th May. Your child’s class teacher will communicate the time for their class photos. Please ensure that your child is dressed in their best uniform to capture your treasured school memories! Photos will be taken in the EPAC. Sibling photos can be taken before school and at first break.
School Dress Code
As the days become cooler, students may need to start wearing a jumper. Parents are asked to please follow our school Dress Code that requires students either wear the school jacket, or a plain blue jumper. Blue jumpers with printed designs, colour jumpers and hoodies are not permitted. Girls are permitted to wear navy tights. As these are difficult to find, they are also permitted to wear black tights. Blue tracksuit pants are also suitable for both boys and girls to wear with their polo shirt. This Dress Code was developed collaboratively with the school community and supports the wearing of a school uniform to promote a sense of belonging and school pride. It also promotes a supportive environment fostering mutual respect among individuals at school by minimising visible evidence of economic, class or social difference. Thank you for your support of our School Dress Code.

The Student Council has many events planned for Term 2. The students will be raising money for their legacy item through the Meal Deal in Week 9 and the Silly Socks and Sunnies Day. They are also raising money for the Kid’s Cancer Council through the Dress Like a Pirate Day and money for the Indigenous Literacy.
Year 5/6 Camp
Our Year 5/6 Teachers, Mrs Burrows, Mr Woodrick and Mr Harris will be attending camp from Monday 26th May to Wednesday 28th May (Week 6) this term. A reminder that camp forms were due back at the end of last term, and these are urgently needed so that the information can be provided to the camp regarding dietary and medical needs. Full payment for the camp is due on Friday 9th May (end Week 3). If you are unable to make payment by this date, please contact the Business Manager as soon as possible to discuss options.
We will have begin having camp meetings soon with the students to discuss the countdown for camp. The bus in due to leave at approximately 9:30am on the Monday morning, however students must be at school at the normal time so that rolls can be marked, medication can be collected and the bus can be loaded. When helping your child to pack for camp, please ensure that you send along a plastic garbage bag for wet/dirty clothes, and remember to label all your child’s items with their names!
Teachers are currently working together on creating cabin groups and activity groups. Whilst every effort is made to ensure that each child has one friend in their cabin, they may not have all their friends with them. This is the same for the activity groups, in which the students will be mixed from each class to encourage students to make new friendships and work with different peers.
The year 5s and 6s will be in different groups as the Year 6s do different activities than when they visited last year although they do have the opportunity to do the flying fox again as well as visit the beach. This year, as we are attending earlier than previous years and the weather will be cooler, we are going to have a camp fire for the first time. Mr Harris is excited about bringing his guitar for some songs around the fire.
If you have any questions about camp, please email your child’s class teacher. We are looking forward to sharing this wonderful experience with your children.

This show Too Cool For Bullies shows that anyone can become the victim of bullying, how quickly the bullying can devastate the victim and what you can do if you are being bullied. While the topic is serious, Too Cool For Bullies is full of laughs, bright colourful puppets, props, set and the presenter has a number of truly mind baffling illusions to captivate and baffle even the most cynical students. Information regarding the performance and payments will be emailed to parents this week. Payments must be made by Thursday 8th May. Late payments cannot be accepted. Should you have any queries regarding payment please contact school administration.

Welcome to Term 2.
Cross Country
The weather has been a continual challenge to allow us to hold our cross country. We held 1km time trials on Monday to assist in selecting our team. Certainly not the way I wanted it to go, but this was the fairest way to proceed.
City District:
Students have been selected from the time trials on Monday. Good luck to our Cross Country trialists for the City District Cross Country this upcoming Friday 2nd May. Keep an eye on the next newsletter for results.
Class PE:
With the cooler weather coming, swimming makes way for athletics. All classes this term will have students getting involved with a full range of activities from running, jumping and throwing, in preparation for the school athletics carnivals later in the term.
Hats are a must, so please ensure your child has a hat for these lessons.
Email is certainly be the preferred method of communication – aawoo0@eq.edu.au so please ask me anything sports related, and I will endeavour to answer them or find out the answers from the relevant group.
Thanks,
Mr Woodrick

We need YOU! The Tuckshop can only operate with the support of our fantastic volunteers, and we would love for you to be part of the team. If you can spare any time; by baking home treats on the weekend, joining our sticker club whilst you wait before school or helping in the tuckshop itself, please get in touch to lend a helping hand. Every little bit helps! If you have a keen grandparent, neighbour or friend, we would also love their help. Sign up here! Or email the P&C for further details.

Executive functioning
Executive functioning skills are a set of cognitive processes and mental processes that help us manage our thoughts, actions, and emotions to achieve goals. Key components of executive functioning include:
- Planning and Organisation: The ability to plan tasks and organise activities effectively.
- Focus and Attention: Staying focused on tasks and resisting distractions.
- Memory: Remembering instructions and information.
- Impulse Control: Regulating emotions and controlling impulses.
- Time Management: Estimating how long tasks will take and completing them on time.
Together, these skills help us to plan ahead to meet goals and concentrate on a task despite distractions or following multiple-step directions. They allow us to pay attention, organise, remember information, transition between thoughts and actions, and regulate our behaviour and emotions. Executive functioning skills are thought to originate in our brain’s prefrontal cortex, an area that is developing during childhood and adolescence. Your child may have impaired executive functioning skills if they have difficulty with the following:
- starting or finishing tasks
- following multiple steps of a task
- keeping their belongings organised
- making decisions
- managing emotions and impulse control
- problem solving
- remembering information
You can help improve your child’s executive functioning by trying the following:
Improve Time Management
Set realistic time limits when your child is doing a task. Use visual timers, clocks and planners to organise activities and tasks. Using visual timers when doing homework is a great way to manage time and improve concentration and focus.
Build Focus and Attention
Using fidget tools and practising mindfulness may assist to keep your child be present in the moment and reduce distractions. If activities, such as homework are overwhelming, try breaking down tasks into smaller chunks that are easier and more manageable. Using a ‘first, then’ visual and ask questions such as ‘what do you need to do next?’
Create structure and Routine
Try to keep a consistent family routine as much as possible. Use a family calendar to track activities and events, and display in a common area of the house so children can refer to. Use visual schedules to display and organise everyday tasks, for example, have a morning checklist that includes all the jobs needed to do to get ready for school.
Support Memory
Play memory/ card matching games with your child. Ask them to repeat a list of items, for example a list of food that are needed at your next visit to the shops. Tell a short story and ask your child to provide a retell or ask them to tell you recall events from the school day.

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has suggested 5 important rules for families to follow:
- Be kind and take turns. This is a great opportunity to consolidate good sharing habits at home.
- At dinner time, no screens. Spilled food and drink can cause irreparable damage. Take time at dinner for face-face conversations.
- Use devices only in shared spaces. Children and adults can readily discuss what they are doing, seeing and hearing online.
- Ask Permission to use a device. It is important to discuss and set boundaries before a device is used.
- No taking screen to bed. That means adults too! Set good habits by setting devices on charge in a location outside the bedroom, under a fire alarm.
Premier’s Coding Challenge
So far we have only six students (years 3-6) taking part in the Premier’s Coding Challenge. Please promote the Challenge at home, as an ideal opportunity for greater awareness of 17UN Sustainable Goals.
I am pleased to report that Enoggera SS students have already begun developing computer apps to inform people about poverty, homelessness, climate change and gender equity. To take part, download the forms or contact Mr Harris.
Robot Club
This Term we are building robots to compete in the Vex Go challenge. The first Challenge is to use a magic eye sensor to avoid obstacles. This Term we do not have to remove the robot parts at the end of lunchtime, as we were in Term 1. We have eight robots available (Years 2-6). Students can see Mr Harris on Tuesday and/or Thursday at Second Lunches if you (or a small group) are keen to build a robot this Term.

Gardening Club: Harvest time
This was an exciting week for the gardening club because the beans are ready to harvest. During first break on Tuesday the students had their first attempt at harvesting beans. It was a very tricky job because beans hide behind and under the leaves. We picked a variety of green, purple and yellow beans and then during second break allowed the general school population to try a bean. The students learned that even though the beans were different colours, they still tasted the same.
The other exciting news is we have about ten huge rockmelon growing. They are still very green but it shouldn’t be very long before we can harvest them.
Feed the Worms
This week we expanded our worm farms from two farms to three and we have come to realisation that we are not creating enough food for the worms, even with Camp Australia’s help so the students have suggested we have “Feed the Worms, Fridays”.
Students are being asked to bring a bag of food scraps from home and first break on Fridays we will put it in the farms. If the food is not needed that week, it will be placed in our tumble bin.
Containers for change
We are beginning to really recycle our containers for change but there is more we can do. We already have half filled a 240L bin of containers. The biggest problem is the milk products being left in the containers. This milk is curdling and then contaminating the other containers. Last term, we nearly lost a 240L bin of containers because of weevils. The club helped Mrs Kent rescue the containers which was not a nice job but we cannot keep fixing this problem. Please support us by demonstrating to your child how to prepare a container for recycling.
The attached image demonstrates the contamination that is occurring.
Here is the easy process.
- Empty your container completely.
- Remove the straw or lid
- Place the contain in the correct bin.
- Take care to place food scraps in the “feed the worm” bin and general waste in the rubbish bin.

About the week
National Road Safety Week (NRSW) is an annual initiative established by President of the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, Peter Frazer, after his daughter Sarah was killed in an avoidable crash in February 2012.
NRSW is run in partnership with road safety organisations and governments. The Department of Transport and Main Roads is a proud government partner who has supported Yellow Ribbon Road Safety Week since it started in May 2013. With your help, we can encourage all Queenslanders to drive so others survive.
National Road Safety Week will run from 11 to 18 May 2025. The aim of the week is to:
- Remember the approximately 1,300 people who lose their life and 40,000 seriously injured in road crashes on Australian roads each year by:
- Lighting landmarks around Australia yellow to shine a light on road safety
- Display a yellow ribbon (ribbons, lapel pins, vehicle stickers and flags)
- Encourage people to take a pledge to 'Drive so others survive' on the website
- Promote the aim of reducing lives lost and injured on our roads by changing driver behaviour
- Encourage communities to get involved, to promote National Road Safety Week, and advocate for safe behaviours on our roads and paths.
- The overarching theme for the week is Drive so others survive – All road safety is local.
Each day of National Road Safety Week we focus on a different member or of the community who can be affected by road trauma.
Sunday 11 May - Remember the 1300 - Remember the people who have lost their lives and been seriously injured on Australian roads.
Monday 12 May - Your speed matters - Slowing down on our roads
Tuesday 13 May - The road to zero - Taking a road safety pledge
Wednesday 14 May - Get home from work safe - Let’s get everyone home safe
Thursday 15 May - Road safety for every age - Make safe choices today and every day
Friday 16 May - On the same path - Sharing our paths safely
Saturday 17 May - Yellow ride - Sharing the road safely
Sunday 18 May - Take care on regional roads - Taking extra care on regional roads
In Australia, less than one third of the population lives in regional and remote areas, but nearly two thirds of all fatal road crashes occur on rural and remote roads. Today's National Road Safety Week (11-18 May 2025) theme is 'Take care and be aware on rural roads'.
So, even if you're a local and you're familiar with the area, next time you're driving on a regional road remember to follow these six simple steps:
- Slow down and drive to the conditions
- Don't drive tired
- Share the road
- Wear your seatbelt
- Plan your trip home – don't drink and drive
- Look at the road, not your phone.
