By now we are all hopefully in the swing of the new school year and of course in a routine with homework. Hopefully you are also in the routine of reading with your child every day. Children who read, or are read to, each day, will be exposed to over 1 800 000 word in a year and over 2500 books over the time of their primary schooling! The results of this exposure are clear and here are just a few of the reasons why it is important to take an active interest in reading with our children:
- Books widen knowledge, increase vocabulary and help to teach children about language and the world.
- Reading at home is linked to success in reading at school.
- Good readers perform better academically
- Reading with your child helps to build common ground and strengthen relationships.
- Reading helps children to develop attention span (and limits screen time).
So enjoy reading time with your child, not only home readers, but also perhaps a great library book or two each week.
Students have been loving our new computer lab as they have worked with Mrs Wilcox mastering the digital technology curriculum. The lab consists of a class set of computers and a new electronic whiteboard and means our school improvement priority of improving student skills and knowledge in ICTs is well underway.
Congratulations Summer who has been selected to represent City District at the Metropolitan North Regional Trials in Basketball.
Well done also to Mackenzie who received a medal on parade for her resilience and perseverance on the home front during her parent’s 6 month deployment overseas. This presentation acknowledges some of the challenges faced by our military families.

Year 4
This semester so far, we have had a strong learning focus on our Reading and Spelling programs, which are proving to be fantastic. The students are involved three times a week in reading groups and three times a week in spelling. Their classroom teacher is also teaching the explicit strategies required to be a literate student.
We are diligently working on learning to write a chapter for The Twits. We have been reading the book, have all the resources we need and are looking forward to getting started.
In Mathematics, we are covering a range of topics including number, patterns, chance and data, measurement and space. It has been interesting to note how much basic number facts impact on most areas of both mathematics and our lives.
We are also studying our History/HASS unit, which looks at pre and post first Australian contacts throughout history. Next semester we will launch into Geography. In Science, we are looking at soil and erosion.
We are also swimming in PE, looking at healthy choices in Health, learning Digital Technology with Mrs Wilcox, practising design in Technology and learning about portraits, colour and line skills in Visual Art. Throughout the semester, we will learn Dance and continue with our music lessons.
Overall, so far it has been a productive and positive year, which we are all embracing.

Defence Kids Club is on a Friday at 2nd break in the school library and many new students have already come in to see what activities we are working on and connected with other students. Last week I set a ‘Find Someone Who….’ challenge and ‘My New Friend’ activity to encourage new interactions. Students are welcome to bring a friend along with them if they would like to. This is just a weekly offering for children from ADF families, not enforced in any way and if there is something that your child particularly enjoys doing, please let me know. If you are aware of any upcoming family absences due to courses, exercise or deployment could I please ask you to just send me a quick email to let me know so that I can check in with your child during this time and offer additional support if needed.

Junior Choir
Junior Choir is open to all Prep-3 students and is held on Mondays first break in the EPAC. Students are given lyric sheets, so a folder to store their music in is necessary.

City District Soccer Trials are due to occur in the next few weeks. Students born 2010, 2009 and 2008 are eligible to attend. They must have appropriate skills and experience playing soccer in club competitions. Each school in the district is restricted in the number of students they are able to nominate to attend the trials. As a school we have significantly more boys who have indicated an interest and minimum club experience in soccer than the number of nomination places available. The number of students eligible for the girls trial is below the number of nominations so they will go through the usual process receiving their trial notices closer to the actual trials.
To short list boys for nomination we will be running an internal school soccer trial on Thursday 20th February between 11.30 and 12.30 with the support of External EQ staff with significant experience in soccer. The shortlist will not be announced on the day but students will be notified by early the following week, receiving the appropriate forms at that time.

Visit by Registered Nurse for Free Prep Vision Screening
Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screening checks for common eye conditions that may impact your child’s ability to see and therefore impact their learning and development.
A Registered Nurse will be visiting the school on Thursday 26/3/20 to conduct vision screening for children in their prep year. If you wish to have your prep child participate in this free vision screening program, please complete and sign the consent form that has been sent home with your child and return this to your child’s class teacher by Friday 7/2/20.
If your child’s vision is screened, you will be advised of the results in writing. If a vision concern is found, you will receive a phone call from the nurse to discuss referral to an eye health professional for further assessment. If a vision concern is identified and your child requires glasses, eligible health care card holders may be assisted with free basic glasses through the Spectacle Supply Scheme.
Participation in vision screening is not compulsory. If you do not wish for your child to participate in screening, please complete the consent form and indicate that you wish to decline screening.
