Dear Parent and Caregivers,
Wow! Week 4 already! This term is just flying by as we all have settled back into routines and the expectations at ESS. Our new Preps are doing a great job adjusting to ‘big school’ as they learn the ropes. The morning separations are becoming easier, but I do encourage our parents to ensure when the bell goes, you support your child to line up with their bag and then move away from the line up area to make the teachers’ job easier when they collect the class. It is not helpful to the teacher if there are parents still standing in the line-up area when they are trying to take control of the class and get upstairs to commence learning. I ask for parent co-operation with this, particularly in the Prep and Yr 1 line-up areas.
STAFF
I am very excited to announce that we finally have recruited a full-time permanent teacher for our Yr 5/6B class. We thank Mrs Gradwell for taking on the class for the past four weeks and ensuring they are settled and up to date with the curriculum.
It is perfect timing, as Miss Laura Kerwick commences on the class next Monday and Mrs Gradwell moves to Prep C as Mrs Rossiter commences her maternity leave. We wish Mrs Rossiter all the best with the birth of her new baby and her leave. I am sure you will join with me in welcoming Miss Kerwick to our school community as she settles into ESS life.
A reminder, that if you need to contact staff during the school term it is best to do this via email. When you email staff you should expect a response within 48hrs. Please do not expect class teachers to respond during the school day, when they are teaching. If your request is of an urgent nature, it is best to phone the office. Likewise, our school Facebook page is not the best place to get urgent information or to make general commentary.
Please also keep in mind that the morning drop offs are only time for a quick handover and are not the best time to have a lengthy chat as this is a very busy time when teachers are collecting their classes to start the school day.
DISTRICT SWIMMING
Congratulations to our 8 students who represented ESS at the District Swimming Trials held at Lawnton pool last week. They all performed to the best of their ability amongst some talented competition. Much congratulations to Sienna Grice and Toby Vaughan who were selected to go ahead to the Metropolitan North Regional Swimming Trials. We wish them all the best at these trials.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Thank you to those parents who were able to attend the parent information sessions last Tuesday evening. We had an excellent roll up and teachers were very pleased with the engagement of our parent community and the interest they show in their child’s education. If you were unable to attend the teachers will be sending home the information presented so that you can read it in your own time and email through any questions you may have about the class.
The next opportunity to have a formal meeting with your child’s teacher will be at our parent teacher interviews in week 9 of this term. You child’s teacher will be able to let you know how your child has settled in and how they have presented thus far on pre-assessments for the term and the Term One summative assessment tasks.
These interviews were scheduled for week 9 19/3 but we have had to move them to the Monday of that week. Therefore, our first round of Parent Teacher Interviews for this semester will be held this term on Monday, 18/3/24 in EPAC between 3:15 and 7:30pm. More information will go out shortly about using the SOBS program to book your interview spots. These interviews go for 10 minutes each and bookings will be open from Friday 1st March at 4pm to Friday 15th March at 6am.
STUDENT LEADER INVESTITURE CEREMONY
Thank you to those parents who were able to join us for the Student Leader Investiture last week. It was wonderful to see our leaders receive their badges of office from Tim Mander, MP and Andrew Wines, BCC Councillor and to hear the new leaders take their oath in front their families, students from Yr 3-6 and staff.
We look forward to working with the new Captains and the Student Council. They have already had their first meetings for the term and I was most impressed as to how they came to the meetings with lots of ideas. Particularly, our Student Council Class representatives who had obviously take lots of notes from their class meetings to bring to the Council meeting.
A reminder our full students leadership group now is:
School Captains - Bronte Scholes and Adelyn Blatchford
- School Vice-Captain and Student Council Chairperson - Isabella Hall
- House Captains
- Waratah - Jamie Landon and Ivy Atkins
- Banksia - Levi Lavin and Mason Cross
- Arts Captains - Georgia Linedale and Ivy Smith
- Class Student Council Representatives - 3A-Shashwat Kafle, 3B - Emma Bebel, 4A - Penny Leavitt, 4B - Elka Johnston, 5/6A - Keira Humphreys, 5/6B -Charlotte McDonald, 5/6C - John Knight.
NAPLAN
This term we will undertake NAPLAN testing for our Yr 3 and 5 students online between March 13 and 25. We ask that you do not make appointments or plan holidays during this time as it is important that all students have the opportunity to participate in this testing program as it provides valuable data to inform their future learning journeys and school improvement strategies. If you have concerns about your child sitting the NAPLAN tests and require information about possible withdrawal or exemption please make an appointment to see myself, so that we can discuss these options and complete the required paperwork prior to the testing dates. If your student has a Personalised Learning Plan in place and regular adjustments are made in class, the Success Teachers will be in touch for your approval and signing of a document which will allow for these adjustments to be applied to the NAPLAN testing to ensure the tests are accessible for all students. These adjustments might include, extra time or rest breaks.
SCHOOL SUPERVISOR VISIT
On Thursday, we are being visited by a special visitor - our School Supervisor, Mr Willis. Mr Willis will be here to see the leadership team and he will also be visiting some classrooms to see how we are going with our classroom learning. Mr Willis will also be looking over our Strategic Plan and our Annual Implementation Plans before we present these to the School Council for signing off at our first meeting of the year next week, on Monday afternoon. Following that approval process, I will be able to share these documents with the whole school community to give you an idea of our priorities and plans for the next 4 years at ESS.
LEARNING CURVE WELLBEING PROGRAM
Our Learning Curve focus this week is from the Meaning and Purpose category and the wellbeing skill builder is ‘Giving to be Kind’. Students have been working on this topic during their Health lessons this week with Mrs O’Malley and Mrs McKenzie, this is then followed up in class. This focus is about the act of giving and doing kind things for others as well as smiling, saying hello and saying thank you to make a positive difference to other people’s lives.
Our Student Council have combined this focus with Valentine’s Day today to sell little paper hearts that they have been busily cutting out, for students to write a kind message on to give someone today. I received my first one at 8:30am this morning from Charlotte N one of our Student Council class representatives. Thank you Charlotte-you made my day!
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE
Each year we run a range of committees within our school to progress our priorities. Again this year, we will have an Environmental Sustainability Committee to progress our School Environmental Management Plan and initiatives. We usually meet once per term at Crema Coffee Garage at 8am on a Wednesday morning. Our first meeting for this year will be next Wednesday morning 21/2. We have five enthusiastic staff members already signed up on the committee with me as the Chair at present, but we would love for a couple of parents to support us with this work by being part of the committee. Mrs Kent who lead this last year unfortunately has transfered over to McDowall State School in 2024, we are already missing her leadership around this initiative. We are hoping we can all pull together and continue the great work we have created in the last few years under her leadership. This includes looking after our new edible gardens, the compost bins and worm farms, the digital watering system, Containers for Change and our recycling bin system. School staff, students and Camp Australia Staff have been helping out with the gardens, however we are certainly in need of some extra parental support.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson
Principal

- All Prep parents are asked to wait with their children only under C Block before school. Students should be sitting with their parents at this time. Other students without parents must be seated under D Block.
- Year One parents are asked to wait with their children only under A Block before school, or drop their children off to under D Block supervision area.
- Prep and Year One students under their parent supervision are to remain seated and not play in these areas.
- We kindly ask that parents do not wait under E Block as this is the thoroughfare to the boys’ toilets and a handball area, and easier to monitor with no parents and students waiting in this area.
- When the bell rings at 8:45am, Prep students will remain under C Block and line up for Mrs Egerton, Miss Enoch and Mrs Rossiter/Mrs Gradwell. Parents are to say goodbye to their children downstairs and help them to line up to walk up to class.
- Parents are asked not to go upstairs with the students as it causes congestion on the stairs and on the veranda which is unsafe.
- When the bell rings at 8:45am, Year 1s are to line up under A Block (near the Uniform Shop) to line up for Mrs Nelson/Mrs Prill, Mrs Boone and Miss Hunt. Parents are asked to move away from the line up area at this time.
- Students under D Block are not to deliver bags to their line up areas when they arrive at school, but to keep them with them until line up time.
- All students without parent supervision are to sit and wait under D Block.
- From 8:30 these students are permitted to play handball or skip on the AstroTurf if they choose, except on Tuesday when there is breakfast club.
- Students in Year 3 – 6 wishing to participate in Kilometre Club will be walked to the grandstand by a TA on duty at 8:30am on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
- When the bell rings at 8:45am, all students are asked to put equipment away and return to under D Block. The staff on duty will then walk each year level to their line up areas.
- Year 3s are to walk via the library to their line up area, not through the new building breezeway.
Front Gate
In trying to be helpful, some students or parents are using a rock from the front garden to hold back the front gate on South Pine Road leaving it wide open! This is very unsafe for our new preppies who may wander off and see the open gate that leads to a very busy road!
Please ensure that you keep our front gate closed at all times. Thanks for your help with this.
Hats and Water Bottles
During these hot summer months, please remember to ensure your child is coming to school with their hat and a water bottle every day! It is easy for students to become overheated and dehydrated if they are not drinking water throughout the day. As always, please ensure your child’s property is clearly labelled. Only school hats are permitted, caps are not allowed at school or at after school care.
Our school has a very active Facebook page with daily posts to keep our school community informed of what is happening in our school. Our events are posted throughout the term to allow parents time to be prepared for the term ahead Click on the more tab and then the events tab in the dropdown menu to go to our events.
If you have a Facebook page, we encourage all of our parents to follow our page so you can enjoy the wonderful experiences our school has to offer. The more you interact with the page by liking and commenting on posts, the more our page will appear in your newsfeed. A reminder that Facebook is not the best platform to ask questions that you need immediate or urgent replies to, as we don’t always see questions in the comment sections of a post. This is best done by emailing the teacher/admin or calling the office.
Facebook is also not a site for posting complaints or negative comments about staff or school processes. If you have some constructive feedback for the school or an issue that you would like to raise, we would respectfully ask that you make an appointment to speak with the Principal to discuss your concerns. Any inappropriate comments will be removed from the platform. Please remember to never make comments on the page referencing a child’s name for privacy reasons.
A friendly reminder to parents that to ensure the Stop, Drop and Go Zone at South Pine Road (in the car park) is successful, it is essential that drivers proceed all the way to the first gate closest to the library.
Parents are unable to leave their vehicles in this area to walk their students into under the buildings as it causes congestion to the flow of traffic and becomes a safety issue.
Please do not drop your students at the first gate either as this causes cars to have to go around your vehicle and again causes issues with the traffic flow. This gate is locked in the mornings for safety. Thanks for your support with our safe drop-off.
The expectation is the same for Laurel St Stop, Drop and Go. Please do not park in this zone and leave your vehicle as it doesn’t allow for the traffic to flow. It is important to continually move your car to the front of the zone to allow cars to move in behind you.
Our staff are working hard to ensure the safety of our students as they leave the school grounds and we appreciate your support with this by following our pick-up and drop-off processes.
School Dress Code
At the beginning of the school year, it is a good time for parents to reacquaint themselves with our School Dress Code. This Dress Code was developed collaboratively with the school community and supports the wearing of a school uniform to promote a sense of belonging and school pride. It also promotes a supportive environment fostering mutual respect among individuals at school by minimising visible evidence of economic, class or social difference.
A reminder that students are required to wear ALL black shoes to school as part our Dress Code. Socks should be white only and should not be pulled up to the knees.
Please ensure that all items of clothing are labelled – including socks and shoes! This includes items brought on swimming days.
Please click on the link below to view our Dress Code.
Pillar Practice
Our three school pillars including Safety (Be Safe); Relationships (Be Respectful); and Learning (Be a Responsible Learner). Each fortnight at Assembly, a Pillar Practice is shared with staff and students that becomes our focus behaviour improvement.
This fortnight, our Pillar Practice is around Safe Play focussing on keeping our hands and feet to ourselves. All class teachers are provided with a poster for their classroom and will explicitly teach our school expectations around the relevant pillar and behaviour. Students are reminded daily about our focus behaviour with the goal of improving this behaviour across the school.
The Student Engagement and Behaviour committee reviews behaviour data across the school at their meetings to discuss future focus areas for identified behaviours of concern. This process is documented in our Student Code of Conduct and is part of our explicit teaching of behaviour in our school.
You can support us by being aware of the current Pillar Practice and discussing the expectations with your children at home.
Tech Crew 2024
Congratulations to Rose, Toby, Chiara and Walter who were selected to be our Tech Crew for 2024. Year 6 students who were interested in the position, wrote an application outlining their skills and personal qualities for the position. There were approximately 15 applications received for a spot on the crew! The Tech Crew is responsible for setting up for assembly including the sound desk, microphones, PowerPoint, photography and stage management. They are also called upon to help with the set up for other events through the school year.
The Student Leaders’ Investiture Ceremony was held last Monday. Captains and Student Council Class Representatives were presented with their badges and certificates and took their leadership oath in front of the student body. Special guests Tim Mander MP and Councillor Andrew Wines presented with Mrs Robinson during the ceremony. We are very grateful to them for taking time out of their busy schedules to support our school and the current leaders.
The first Student Council Meeting was held last week, and the class representatives brought lots of ideas, feedback and improvements to discuss at the meetings on behalf of their classes.
The first wellbeing initiative for the Student Council occurred today with love hearts being sold for students to write messages of kindness and gratitude to their friends, family or teachers. This was in line with this week’s Learning Curve focus of ‘Giving to be Kind’.
Thanks to everyone who supported this activity. We look forward to the next Student Council event coming soon!
Bright Futures STEM Incursion
Year 5/6 students will be attending the Bright Futures STEM pogram in the EPAC on Friday morning from 9am – 11am. The program aims to raise students’ awareness of the diverse career opportunities made available through the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Australian Resources and Energy Employer Association (AREEA) has developed this program due to a decline in these areas of study, despite a forecasted growth in demand for these skills for the future workforce.
This unique national program gives students in Years 5-6 the opportunity to engage with industry STEM professionals, learn about diverse and rewarding careers and participate in hands-on, interactive STEM based activities.
Students will engage in 5 activities including Snap Circuits, Turing Tumbles, Virtual Reality, Dr Eureka and Gravitrax. Students will rotate through the activities throughout the morning. If you are interested in reading more about the program, you can visit the Bright Future program at www.brightfuturestem.com.au.

Curriculum - Reading and Writing
Queensland’s Reading Commitment
We know that learning to read is life-changing, with almost everything we do involves reading and writing. At each stage of schooling, families and carers play an important role in supporting children to read and learn about the world around them.
The Department of Education and P&Cs Queensland are holding community twilights to provide information on Queensland’s Reading Commitment and supporting reading at home.
- Topic: Supporting children’s reading at home
- Dates: 21 February and 13 March 2024
- Time: 6:30pm – 7:15pm
- Audience: Parents and Carers of Prep to Year 2 students
- Registration: https://www.ivvy.com.au/event/KLCA5Y/
When registering, parents will be provided with the opportunity to submit questions they would like answered.
For more information, please contact Reading.Curriculum@qed.qld.gov.au
What a treat it has been for the year 4 teachers to get to know our new cohort of learners! We have already started to dive deep into the curriculum looking at language features including noun groups, verb groups and prepositional phrases in English. The students have been so absorbed by the humour and excitement in our novel study of “The Twits” and we look forward to some amazing chapters being produced. But watch out! There are pranks afoot! Make sure you are not the unexpected victim!
In Mathematics we have been spending time looking at our number understanding and our strategies for addition and subtraction moving on to multiplication and division next. There is a big jump in this area in grade four so it is great to see the kids practicing their tables as part of their homework.
We have been digging up the dirt on rock cycles and soil types in Science and the hands-on investigations are certainly proving to be very popular.
A quick reminder to please get in touch early on if you have any questions or concerns.

Class Swimming:
Thank you to all those parents/grandparents/carers who have been coming to the pool each week to assist with swimming for our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 Classes. Your assistance is really appreciated and makes such a difference to the students.
Can all parents please check that UNIFORMS and SWIMMING GEAR is named. Some classes waste considerable time each week during lessons sorting out the missing shirt, lost shorts and left behind swimming gear. Naming it makes this much easier and quicker, not to mention fewer losses for you and your students.
Please ensure that your child has everything they need for our swimming lessons, to save us precious time.
- Swimming Cap
- Sunsafe Shirt – students cannot swim without something covering their shoulders – a rashie/sunshirt or T-shirt. The only exception to this is the swim suits which have built in long or short sleeves.
- Goggles – while these are not compulsory – many students are more comfortable wearing them, if your students wishes to wear these please make sure they have their own. While there are some spares at the pool a lot of time can be wasted with the sheer volume of students borrowing goggles – it takes a lot of time and hands to adjust so many goggles, which inevitably is needed when they are borrowing our spares – if they have their own they will fit them without needing adjustment.
Students Unable to Swim due to illness – if your child is unable to swim on any particular week, please send a note to school with your child or email me at aawoo0@eq.edu.au
A special mention to Prep B, they were absolutely amazing in getting changed at the end of the lesson. Something we plan in 20 minutes and it took them only 15 minutes. Keep it up!
Kilometre Club:
Students who are keen to prepare for Cross Country can participate in Kilometre Club. We meet on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting at 8:30am to 8.45am.
District Sport Trials:
Well done to the ESS swim team who participated in recent City District trials. As a team we came second overall in the C-class schools – a terrific effort.
A special congratulations to Toby and Sienna who both qualified for the City District team at the regional trials. Good luck and swim SUPER fast.

Dance Ensemble Auditions
All I can say is WOW! Last week we held our auditions for the Mini, Junior and Senior Dance Ensembles and we had nearly 80 students attend across Years 4- 6 which is incredible! It's wonderful to see so many students at Enoggera interested in our Dance programs.
Due to many students missing out on the auditions, I'm holding a second round of auditions this week for our Mini, Junior and Senior Dance ensembles to accommodate for student absences.
Audition Information
- Mini Dance (Grade 3's only) - Wednesday 14th second break after eating
- Junior & Senior Dance (Grade 4 -6) - Thursday 15th first break after eating
If your student has already auditioned, they do not need to come again, this is only for students who were away last week and/missed out on coming along to try out.
After the final auditions I will be busy putting together our final teams and will let students and families know as soon as possible so we can begin in Week 5.
I look forward to seeing our wonderful Grade 3 - 6 students at auditions.

Sky High Gymnastics was founded to help children with disabilities learn gymnastics at their own pace in a fun and safe environment. We're on a mission to provide children with disabilities the opportunity to explore the world of gymnastics in a safe, quiet and one-on-one environment. We foster growth, confidence and well-being whilst encouraging our kids to progress at their own pace. Our mission is to help our kids transition into a neurotypical class with ease by teaching them the foundational skills required. Feel free to check our website to learn more!
Take Action
Does your child feel overly fearful, anxious, or worried in certain situations?
Many children can feel anxious, fearful, or worried in certain situations. In most situations this is a normal emotion when faced with something threatening. Everyone can feel anxious from time to time. However, some children experience anxiety more intensely or more often than others and it stops them from having fun, going to school, or getting the most out of their life.
Take Action is an evidence-based program for 7- to 12-year-olds experiencing anxiety. Each child session takes approximately 1 hour, and the program runs over 10-12 weeks (either in-person or online). The program also includes six x 1-hour sessions for parents/carers to provide additional education and support on managing children’s anxiety.
All children receive a comprehensive assessment before and after the program, and all child and parent/carer workbooks and materials to practice Take Action skills at home are provided. The project has full ethics approval from the Griffith University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC: 2023/381).

Absences
As we dive into the new year, I wanted to take a moment to address an important aspect of our community, our defence families. With the year well underway, some of our defence parents may begin to experience absences due to field or deployments. These absences can have a significant impact on both home and school life for our defence kids.
If your family is currently experiencing or will soon face parental absences, please know that I, as your Defence School Mentor, am here to offer support. It is crucial that you reach out to me so that I can ensure we are prepared to provide assistance pre, during, and post-absence. Additionally, informing your child’s teacher about the situation will enable them to offer extra support if needed.
Open Communication is the key, and your input is invaluable in helping us support your children effectively during these challenging times.
Please feel free to email me at any time with your concers: rmcca238@eq.edu.au.
Events in our community
In other news, mark your calendars for the upcoming Run Army event on April 21st! There’s currently an early bird special available until February 28th, with proceeds supporting Legacy Australia. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get involved in a meaningful cause while staying active as a community.
Wishing you all a wonderful fortnight ahead.
Warm regards

Road Safety and Back to School
With school back for 2024, we need to keep safety top-of-mind when travelling through active school zones and around our school community.
School zone times have been standardised in Queensland to help motorists remember when to slow down. The standard operating times for most school zones in Queensland are 7–9am and 2–4pm, with some operating all day between 7am–4pm.
Speeding remains a significant concern, contributing to fatalities and injuries, and police will be on the lookout for speeding motorists. Keeping below the signed speed limit in school zones helps keep everyone safe. This simple adjustment may have minimal impact on travel time but has the potential to significantly contribute to saving lives.
Children's crossings are identified by children's crossing flags, displayed near crossings before and after school hours.
When the crossing is supervised, you, as a motorist, must:
- Wait until all pedestrians, bicycle riders, or personal mobility device riders have crossed the road and the crossing supervisor has returned to the footpath.
- Abide by the direction given by the School Crossing Supervisor.
Please keep our children safe by staying alert, slowing down and obeying our school crossing supervisors who are there to help kids cross the road safely.
You can also help children become more road safety aware by:
- Showing them how to look for vehicles coming in and out of driveways and discourage them from playing behind parked cars, or with toys or balls when walking to school.
- Ensuring your child knows the safest route to and from school. This is usually the way with the least traffic and the fewest roads to cross and teach your child to always walk on footpaths.
- Showing your child how to cross at traffic lights when the green 'walk' sign is showing at pedestrian crossings when vehicles have stopped and at supervised school crossings when the supervisor has signalled it is safe to do so.
- Accompanying children when walking or riding to school until they are old enough to understand road safety (usually around 10 years or older).
- Teaching your child if they catch the bus to never cross in front of or behind a bus; wait until the bus goes before crossing the road.
- Making sure wheeled devices (bicycle, scooter, skateboard, or rollerblades) used to travel to school are well maintained and that the appropriate protective and safety gear (for example, helmet, visible clothing, knee and elbow pads) are used.
Visit the Street Smarts website for more information about what to do at pedestrian and children crossings.
