Dear Parent and Caregivers,
Welcome back to Term 2 at Enoggera State School. We provide a warm welcome to the new families joining us this term from near and far. As always, Term 2 is a busy term focussed on learning- culminating with the assessment and reporting period, as well as many other exciting activities already on the calendar. These include our annual inter-house athletics carnivals, Under 8’s day and whole school open day, just to name a few. We will also celebrate Chaplaincy Week from May 22-26 with a range of activities including a dress up day. Additionally, we will be hosting a Slime Run as a major fundraiser for the Local Chaplaincy Committee to support Chaplaincy in our school and to cover the government shortfall in Chaplaincy wages.
ANZAC DAY
We were very fortunate the rain held off for our beautiful school ANZAC service in our front memorial gardens on Monday morning. A big thank you to those who attended- especially our special guests, Major Cocker, Captain Colquhoun, Chaplain Petchell and Dan from Tim Mander’s office, as well as the parents and community members who attended. Our students were very respectful and participated very well. From our Captains through to our Class representatives who laid the wreaths - a significant display of commemoration from all.
A big thank you to Mrs Burrows for her superb organisation and also to Mr Callaghan and the other staff who assisted with preparing the area and pack up on the day.
We also attended the Gaythorne March on ANZAC Day. Whilst our contingent was small we had a great march around the Gaythorne streets as the weather held off. Our school captains did a great job leading the march and also laying a wreath on behalf of the school.
CAMP AUSTRALIA
At the end of last term we farewelled YMCA after 21 years of service to ESS and welcomed Camp Australia, who are now operating the service. We have completed our induction with their staff and they are settling into our school and routines. I have met with Camp Australia management to pass on feedback and to work with them around their launch activities and how they can support our school this term through sports days, Under 8s day and our Chaplaincy Slime run. Due to numbers being at capacity in OSHC on some days for some time now, we have applied with Camp Australia to extend the licence from 105 to 135 students and, consequently, have already added another room next door in D Block to the licence as a shared space.

This means that Camp Australia can use the space before and after school while we still retain access to it during the school day for a flexible learning area, or break out space for our Yr 5/6 classes. As Camp Australia have already set up nicely in this space, they effectively have more room already than YMCA did, which will serve them into the future when the new licence is approved. This process can take 60-90 days to be approved by the Early Childhood Education and Care Department.
HOLIDAY FACILITIES
The work on the multipurpose roof project commenced over the holidays- with the framework for the roof is currently being galvanised, ready for installation. We have also had a range of other work completed during the holidays including: the coloured spray-crete of the school entrance and under D Block which has really brightened up the entrance to the school and looked great at the ANZAC ceremony. We also had a ramp and the path installed at the Laurel St entry next to the Church for bike and pram access to this part of the school. We have also had some work done on removing of mould from the external walls of the library ready for some repainting later in the year and also some investigative work on water damage to EPAC and the library as well as the air con in the library replaced.
FULL SCHOOL REVIEW
Our full school review was completed in the last week of term with some very positive feedback from the three reviewers who spent three days in our school interviewing staff, students and, parents and community partners. We are awaiting our reports which will detail the affirmations and recommendations to guide the quadrennial school review process and ultimately our next four-year strategic plan for the school. Thank you to those parents who were able to speak with the reviewers and provide such positive feedback around the school and the work that we do here.
CROSS COUNTRY
Our school Cross Country representative team will attend the City District Cross Country trials next week on May 3. Those students successful at that event will be chosen to progress to the Regional Met North trials as part of the City District team. We wish our runners all the best next week as they represent our school with pride.
CHAPLAINCY
On Monday's assembly, we farewelled Chappy Sarah. We thanked her for her wonderful service to our school community over the past 6 years, and bid her good luck as she has now commenced her new role as Chaplain in the Army. Our new Chaplain (Chappy Twinkee) commenced work here last week. I introduced her to every class and she is really looking forward to working here and supporting our school community. She has a great mentor in Chappy Sarah who is staying on as the Chair of the Local Chaplaincy Committee this year.
OPEN DAY
On May 26 we will hold our first Open Day for this year aimed at families who are looking to enrol here for 2024 either in Prep or other year levels. If you know of families who live in our catchment and are hoping to come to ESS, please let them know of the coming Open Day. This will commence in the EPAC with a talk about the school, followed by a tour of the facilities.
QEW SURVEY
This week and next week our students in Yr 4/5/6 will participate in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey, which aims to collect information from Queensland state schools in a consistent and systematic way to gain a better understanding of the engagement and wellbeing of our students.
It asks questions about many aspects of students' wellbeing, engagement and experience at school. Data from the survey is used to help schools monitor their school culture, school engagement and student wellbeing in line with the Student Learning and Wellbeing Framework (PDF, 535KB) External link and the Equity and Excellence: realising the potential of every student (PDF, 4.6MB) External link.
More information about the survey will be emailed out to Yr 4/5/6 parents this week with an opportunity to opt-out if you do not want your child to complete the anonymous survey at school.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson
Principal
WELCOME BACK
I hope that everyone enjoyed a relaxing Easter Break! It has been a busy start to Term Two and lots of learning and events to look forward to as the term progresses.
BEFORE SCHOOL PROCESSES
A reminder to parents about before school expectations:
- All parents who wait with their children before school, are required to wait under under C Block Students should be sitting with their parents at this time. We kindly ask that you do not wait under E Block as this is the thoroughfare to the boys’ toilets and easier to monitor with no parents and students waiting in this area.
- When the bell rings at 8:45am, Prep students will remain under C Block and line up for Mrs Egerton, Mrs Nelson and Mrs Rossiter/Miss Enoch. Parents are asked not to go upstairs with the students as it causes congestion on the stairs and on the veranda which is unsafe. Parents are not required to wait with their prep students. Any prep students without a parent sit under D Block and are supervised by staff.
- Students are not to deliver bags to their line up areas when they arrive at school, but to keep them with them until line up time.
- All students without parent supervision are to sit and wait under D Block. From 8:30 these students are permitted to play handball or skip on the AstroTurf if they choose. When the bell rings, students are asked to return their skipping ropes and handballs to the Year 5/6 volunteers, collect their bags and walk to their line up area.
Front Gate
In trying to be helpful, some students or parents are using a rock from the front garden to hold back the front gate on South Pine Road leaving it wide open! This is very unsafe for our new preppies who may wander off and see the open gate that leads to a very busy road! Please ensure that you keep our front gate closed at all times. Thanks for your help with this.
Our school has a very active Facebook page with daily posts to keep our school community informed of what is happening in our school. Our events are posted throughout the term to allow parents time to be prepared for the term ahead. We encourage all of our parents to follow our page so you can enjoy the wonderful experiences our school has to offer. The more you interact with the page by liking and commenting on posts, the more our page will appear in your newsfeed. A reminder that Facebook is not the best platform to ask questions that you need immediate or urgent replies to, as we don’t always see questions in the comment sections of a post. This is best done by emailing the teacher/admin or calling the office. Facebook is also not a site for posting complaints or negative comments about staff or school processes. If you have some constructive feedback for the school or an issue that you would like to raise, we would respectfully ask that you make an appointment to speak with the Principal to discuss your concerns. Any inappropriate or derogatory comments will be removed from the platform.
Stop, Drop and Go
A friendly reminder to parents that to ensure the Stop, Drop and Go Zone at South Pine Road (in the car park) is successful, it is essential that drivers proceed all the way to the first gate closest to the library. Parents are unable to leave their vehicles in this area to walk their students into under the buildings as it causes congestion to the flow of traffic and becomes a safety issue. Please do not drop your students at the first gate either as this causes cars to have to go around your vehicle and again causes issues with the traffic flow. This gate is locked in the mornings for safety. Thanks for your support with our safe drop-off.
The expectation is the same for Laurel St Stop, Drop and Go. Please do not park in this zone and leave your vehicle as it doesn’t allow for the traffic to flow. It is important to continually move your car to the front of the zone to allow cars to move in behind you. Our staff are working hard to ensure the safety of our students as they leave the school grounds and we appreciate your support with this by following our pick-up and drop-off processes.
Pillar Practice
Our three school pillars including Safety (Be Safe); Relationships (Be Respectful); and Learning (Be a Responsible Learner). Each fortnight at Assembly, a Pillar Practice is shared with staff and students that becomes our focus behaviour improvement. This fortnight, our Pillar Practice is around safe play – play fairly; hands and feet to self; and be safe on playgrounds. All class teachers are provided with a poster for their classroom and will explicitly teach our school expectations around the relevant pillar and behaviour. Students are reminded daily about our focus behaviour with the goal of improving this behaviour across the school. The Student Engagement and Behaviour committee reviews behaviour data across the school at their meetings to discuss future focus areas for identified behaviours of concern. This process is documented in our Student Code of Conduct and is part of our explicit teaching of behaviour in our school. You can support us by being aware of the current Pillar Practice and discussing the expectations with your children at home.
School Dress Code
As the days become cooler, students may need to start wearing a jumper. Parents are asked to please follow our school Dress Code that requires students either wear the school jacket, or a plain blue jumper. Blue jumpers with printed designs, colour jumpers and hoodies are not permitted. Girls are permitted to wear navy or black tights as navy ones are often hard to find. Blue tracksuit pants are also suitable for both boys and girls to wear with their polo shirt. This Dress Code was developed collaboratively with the school community and supports the wearing of a school uniform to promote a sense of belonging and school pride. It also promotes a supportive environment fostering mutual respect among individuals at school by minimising visible evidence of economic, class or social difference. Thank you for your support of our School Dress Code.
Student Council
The Student Council will hold their first meeting for the term on Friday next week. The Student Council is planning a Meal Deal fundraiser with money raised going towards their legacy item. They are also planning an Acts of Kindness Day as a wellbeing initiative for staff and students. More details will be provided after the meeting. Parents are also reminded that the Student Council has reintroduced ‘Wrapper Free Wednesday’, so please be thoughtful in how you package your child’s lunch on Wednesday to help up to reduce waste.
NOVA Radio Station – HANDBALL BLITZ
This morning, Angus from NOVA Radio Station visited Enoggera State School for the Nova Handball Blitz. Kieran (2B) and his mother Rita, nominated ESS for this promotion. Kieran was interviewed live on the radio this morning. Many students who are regular handball players before school were also invited to come along to watch Kieran be interviewed and cheer him on. Nova donated a bag of handballs to the school which will be made available to the students in our lunchtime clubs and activities program, as well as for before school games. We don't have the audio link for this interview just yet, but will be sure to provide it in the next newsletter.

Hello everyone!
So, the Prep cohort has finished their first term of school! We have learnt most of our sounds, started to write sentences, read simple texts, explored numbers and investigated concepts about families and the weather. We celebrated the end of Term One with the Easter Bonnet Parade.

Term Two will see our Preppies create simple rhymes in English, investigate teen numbers for Maths, explore materials in Science and share our Memory Boxes as part of HASS. Readers will start to be sent home as part of Homework along with Magic 100 word lists and simple blending activities. We also have many special events to look forward to including our 100 Days of School celebration, Under 8’s Day and our Junior Athletics Carnival.
Hi ESS families,
My name is Laura Vinter and I am the new DSM (Defence School Mentor) at Enoggera State School. I am very excited to be here at your wonderful school and the staff and your children have made me feel very welcome thus far. I have loved getting to know your children over the past week. We have already built some wonderful rapports building connections in class, in the playground and at Defence Kids HQ club. The Defence Kids HQ club will now take place every Monday and Tuesday lunch time at 1:20pm. I bring with me to Enoggera SS, a wealth of experience and love for this role across multiple schools as a Defence School Mentor throughout the week.
As you may already be aware, the role of the Defence School Mentor is to support and assist young people from Defence families to integrate into the school community and to facilitate a supportive educational environment for them. This means providing your child with social and emotional support and any academic challenges that may arise. In addition to this on-site support, directing students to school, defence or external programs, services or opportunities that meet their support needs.
A little bit about me. I am a mother of two beautiful children. I have a daughter in grade 3 at Oakleigh State School and a son who is almost 2! When I’m not working in my DSM role, I love to get out amongst nature and spending time with my family at the beach, local parks and local cafes. A fun fact about Miss Laura: Miss Laura played the Lead role of Sandy in the Highschool Musical ‘Grease’.
If you have any concerns or any information you would like to share with myself regarding your child and how we as a school can best support them in or out of the school environment, please don't hesitate to contact me. I will be on-site at school on Mondays and Tuesdays and can be contacted via email at lvint7@eq.edu.au. Alternatively, if you wish to have a phone conversation regarding your child I can be contacted through the school office line on: (07) 3550 1333.
I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you in the near future .
Kind regards,
Laura Vinter
Defence School Mentor
Welcome to term 2.
Email is certainly be the preferred method of communication – aawoo0@eq.edu.au so please ask me anything sports related, and I will endeavour to answer them or find out the answers from the relevant group.
City District:
Good luck to our Cross Country trialists for the City District Cross Country next Wednesday. There will be lots of nerves but hopefully all participants can try their hardest and do themselves and the school proud. Runners, remember, start slow and finish fast!!!
Class PE:
With the cooler weather, swimming makes way for athletics. All classes this term will be getting involved with the full range of running, jumping and throwing activities in preparation for the school athletics carnivals later in the term.
Kilometre Club:
We will continue running club Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning again his term.
As we get closer into Athletics, we will change focus, but it always be about being active before school.
Students are to remain in their normal waiting place under the buildings until collected by Mr Woodrick.
P&C Welcome
Welcome back to Term 2 of 2023! What a busy time of year we have coming up.
We would love to add more members to our wonderful P&C community. Being a member doesn’t mean you have to volunteer for every event or come to meetings. Being a member means you have a voice in our community and that you will be kept in the loop on all the exciting (and sometimes not so exciting) projects and events that we have in the pipeline. If you’d like to be part of what we think is probably the best P&C out there, please email Chrissy for a membership form pandc@enoggerass.eq.edu.au

Qkr! Orders
We know when ordering on Qkr! it can get a bit tricky, and we have had an increase in the number of mistakes being made by parents and caregivers on tuckshop orders, resulting in children not having lunch supplied as expected, so here are some handy hints on making and cancelling orders. Please remember that you can always email or message our Facebook page if you need some help.
Please make sure all profiles are correct, and that you order for the correct child on the correct day.
If an ordering error does occur, the school will notify you and put you in touch with the tuckshop so a lunch can be provided. Please check your receipts in Qkr! to help identify the error and be considerate when speaking with our tuckshop convenor Rosetta or the volunteers as they help you to arrange a lunch for your child.
Please note that when you order for the wrong day and your child arrives with no lunch they will always be fed, once you have been notified by the school.
