Dear Parent and Caregivers,
It was great to see so many interested people at the first of our P & C Meetings for 2021 held last week. It was also great to hear of the great projects our P & C are currently working on for the school, such as the roof over the multi-purpose court which is the big ticket item for this year. Funding has been approved and is ready to go so we are just waiting on final costings and commencement dates. The next meeting will be the AGM where all positions will be declared vacant and we refill the committee for this year. It would be great to see people take on the roles to keep our P & C firing along. The current committee have done an excellent job during their terms of office, but would love to see some fresh faces take on the leadership positions.
Next week will see the School Council re-convene for 2021 and following that first meeting there will be opportunity for new people to join the school council, so keep an eye out in the newsletter for further information around nominating for a position on the School Council.
You may be wondering what the difference is between the P & C and the School Council. The main difference is that whilst the P & C is responsible for fundraising and supporting the school financially and in kind, the School Council is more involved in the strategic direction of the school.
Likewise, the Local Chaplaincy Committee met today for a pre-meeting to enlist some new support and Chappy Sarah tells me it was a great success, so we look forward to some renewed interest in the LCC as we head towards the first official meeting for the year.
WELLBEING
This week on assembly I spoke to the students about the importance of using the character strength of kindness by performing random acts of kindness, using kind and soft words and showing kindness by smiling. It was lovely to see 3A took on board my messages and created a random acts of kindness wall in their classroom where they could all post their kind acts towards their classmates. They brainstormed a number of ways they could show kindness at school and then are posting on the board when they perform one of those acts of kindness. Keep up the great work 3A!
PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS
A reminder re:- our Parent Teacher Meetings are this term, and we are going to trial a whole-school muster event for this. We will hold the evening in EPAC on Tuesday 16th March from 3:15-7:00pm. All teachers will be available on this evening for 10 minute interviews to be booked through our SOBS Booking program. Watch the newsletter for more details from Mrs O’Malley about the booking process and when it is open.
NAPLAN 2021
Another reminder about NAPLAN 2021. As you may have heard in the media, NAPLAN will continue for students in Year 3 and 5 in Qld schools in 2021. As our school was preparing to go online with NAPLAN testing last year before it was cancelled, we will continue with that preparation this year. We will conduct the practice tests for the students to practice the format and to check connectivity etc between March 22 and April 30 and the actual online tests will be conducted between 11-21 May, 2021. If your child is in Year 3 or 5 and you have any concerns about your child sitting the NAPLAN tests this year, please contact myself or our Head of Department-Curriculum- Mrs Amy O’Malley.
Every Day Counts
A reminder that all students of school age are required to come to school every day unless they are sick. Likewise, students need to be at school on time every day. If your child is consistently coming late to school, they are missing core learning time and often concepts that will set them up for success for the rest of the day. If you are struggling to get your child to school and require support, please reach out as we can put you in contact with agencies that can help. There are also a whole range of resources available on the Department of Education website at:
Did you know that just missing a few minutes every day or missing a day a fortnight as per the poster below can seriously cause your child to fall behind at school and impact their schooling.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson
Principal

Year 2 News
What a wonderful start to the year we have had in Year 2. The children have embraced the more challenging work that Year 2 brings and we are constantly amazed at their enthusiasm for learning.
In English we have been focussing on reading, writing and performing poetry. We have enjoyed watching and listening to poets present their poems so we can learn how to present our own poetry innovations. This is a very exciting unit that supports the children to recognise and reproduce rhyming patterns, rhythmic patterns and other poetic features. We are having great fun watching alliteration videos and using alliteration ourselves. Ask your child to give you a demonstration of their alliteration skills!
In Maths we have covered so many areas of learning, including using calendars, counting large collections, skip counting using collections and measuring length using informal units of measurement, including parts of our bodies. As you can see by our photos, we do a lot of hands on work to support our learning as well as having fun!
We are all really looking forward to our excursion to Samford Historical Museum in Term 2. Look out for more information later this term. At the museum we will visit an old school building and have the chance to look at some old style technology, like telephones and washing wringers with a handle to turn. This visit aligns with our HASS unit about technologies changing over time.
For students in 2A: Please keep sending in empty boxes and soft plastic, like bubble wrap or old plastic bags, to help us make our strong, water resistant treasure chests. Shoe boxes would be great. This is going to be a fun Science activity. We are testing the strength of paper once it gets wet and soon we will be able to make some recycled paper.
In our movement breaks we have found some fun dance and exercise videos that we can move and sing along to. It’s a fun and happening place in Year 2 and we hope your children love spending their days here as much as we do!
Students have thoroughly enjoyed their Olympian portraits in Art as well as their umbrella colour wheels.
We are also having a blast learning Kung Fu Punctuation in our Grammar lessons. Ask us to show you the cool moves we know!
2A and 2B will be constructing a ‘treasure chest’ for their science project later on in the term. The aim is to combine two materials to create a treasure chest that is both strong and water-resistant. Please see the email sent from the classroom teacher for more information.

Term 1 is moving so quickly, here we are half way through with quite a few events coming up. If you do have questions relating to sport, please email me at jjard16@eq.edu.au and I will endeavour to answer them or find out the answers from the relevant group.
District Team Selection:
Congratulations to Summer who has been selected in the City District Basketball Team. We wish you all the best at the upcoming Regional Carnival.
Class Swimming:
Class swimming is underway for all classes with either Mrs Prill or Mrs Jardine. Please make sure that your student brings all their gear each week and most importantly it is labelled with their name. This includes their uniforms as these are easily mixed up. Any named lost property is returned to the student at the earliest convenience, however, unnamed items will remain with the PE teachers at the pool if they are unclaimed at the end of the term they may be passed onto local charities.
Students Unable To Swim due to illness – if your child is unable to swim on any particular week, please send a note to school with your child or email Mrs Jardine at jjard16@eq.edu.au or Mrs Prill at tkfar0@eq.edu.au
Kilometre Club:
We had been hoping to start the Kilometre Club in week 5, however, the rain beat us on that morning. Hopefully this week will be a better opportunity. Kilometre club is open to all students on a Thursday Morning between approximately 8.15am and 8.45am. Students must remain under the building if they are at school at 8.15am to be collected by the PE teachers. If they arrive after this time they may join in with the morning running after checking in with the PE teachers on the ova.
District Sport Trials:
Term 1 & 2 are particularly busy with City District Team Sport Trials. Depending on the sport, students born 2011, 2010 & 2009 may be able to trial for City District Teams and ultimately commence a Representative Pathway. This is an optional extra-curricular activity for students. It involves costs to parents in terms of trial fees, most trials are during the day with transport the responsibility of the parents, however, trials will also remain ‘Spectator Free’ environments – parents will need to drop off prior to the trials and return and pick up at completion of trials. If students are selected in a City District Team there will be additional costs including, uniforms, team levies, possibly some travel to larger venues around the city. There will also be additional training sessions. Parents and Students need to be fully aware of the commitment that will be needed if they consider trialling.
As a general guide, the student should be participating in club sport or tournaments of the particular sport for in excess of one year. Forms will be distributed by the HPE teacher if they are eligible to participate in trials. They will need to be completed by parents, signed off by the Principal and taken to the trial by the student, trial payments will need to be made via the City District School Shoponline all prior to the trial. School nominations will be submitted by the HPE teacher for those students who have been provided with forms. If your student does not wish to trial please, let me know ASAP after you have received forms and I will withdraw the school nomination.
For some sports a trial will be held at school to select those attending trials as our nomination numbers are limited. Students who have expressed an interest will be advised of trials when they arise, which will typically be during a lunch break or short period of class time. These trials will be supported by Education Queensland Staff who have experience in the nominated sports.
Please remember this is an opportunity at REPRESENTATIVE SPORT not an opportunity to try something new.
The upper school classes have all discussed with me the sports in which they participate outside of school and their interest in potentially participating in representative trials and their experience playing their sports, which helps in considering whether it is timely for them to be nominated or whether they should be waiting for another year.
Some additional information about the District is available on the City District Sports Page connected to the Metropolitan North Website. Feel free to check in on this site. https://metnorthschoolsport.eq.edu.au/district-sport/our-districts/city
