Dear Parent and Caregivers,
STUDENT FREE DAY
A reminder that next Friday, the 2 Sepetmber is a Student Free Day in all Qld State Schools. There will be no staff on site on this day.
INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATE
I am most excited to announce that we have finally had the new senior playground handed over to our students. Mrs Burrows has done a roster to begin with, which allows each year level to have their own time on the playground. Once popularity has settled, we will create a new more permanent roster for next term.

The new stairs are still not completed, but will be over the September holidays. We are close to finalising our furniture and affects purchases for the new building also, which is very exciting.
STAFFING
Our Regional HR teams are currently working on Teacher transfers for the 2023 school year. This year there are two processes- a requested transfer process where teachers can request a transfer to another school and then there is the required transfer process where the DoE will move teachers around to other schools in order to fill vacancies and to ensure there is balance of experience, skills, gender across schools and also to ensure green placements where staff are not required to travel more than 50 minutes from their home. This year as part of the required process, they are targeting teachers who have been 5-10 years in their current school and were made permanent at that school on the undertaking that they would complete some rural/remote/unfavourable service and have not done so thus far in Queensland. As with every other school, we have teachers who have been identified as part of this required process, so we are awaiting news early next term as to who may be impacted.
MATHEMATICS TOURNAMENT
Our Maths Tournament teams have been busily preparing for the tournament next week at Albany Hills State School. They will be accompanied by Mrs Burrows and Mrs Hall on the day. We wish them all the best as they compete against other schools in Brisbane North.
WAKAKIRRI
You have no doubt heard already, our Wakakirri team performed splendidly at the recent performance and have been invited back to perform again at the awards night held at the Logan Entertainment Centre on September 6. On top of the feedback on our performance which was: ''A well-structured and powerful performance by a strong ensemble addressing our planets greatest challenge '', we also received the following Performance and Production awards: Excellent theme/concept; Excellent ensemble; Excellent staging – combination of all aspects; Best direction: Combination of dancing and acting; Excellent construction and clarity.
And finally, we have been nominated for two National Awards this year. The National Environmental Award and National Performing Arts Excellence Award.
Congratulations to our wonderful Waka team led by Mrs Wilcox!
CHESS COMPETITION
Mr Taylour has received lots of interest and is currently finalising the entries into the School Chess Tournament to be held at St Dympnas Primary School in Aspley on Friday 9 September. Students in Divisions Prep-2 and Yr 3-6 will compete across seven rounds of games of 15 minutes each, where an adjudication occurs if the game is not finished. We are able to enter only 10 students in each category and the top 5 scores from each division will be used to go towards the final placings on the day. As this is the first time we have participated in this event and we have had so much interest due to students taking lessons with Chess Mates at the Emmanuel Church each week, we are really looking forward to participating and enjoying the day with like-minded students. The students will travel from school with school staff on a mini-bus to the competition and back, and will be under the direction of our school staff during the day.
REGIONAL ATHLETICS
Congratulations to our three students who are competing at the Metropolitan North Regional Athletics this week. They are Chelsea O’Hara (Shot Put), Ari Mauchline (1500m) and Avery Pocock (Long Jump). We are eagerly awaiting results from the competition that will be reported in the next newsletter. A big thank you to Mrs Jardine for all of her organisation around selecting and organising students to attend.
OPEN DAY AND PREP ENROLMENTS
We encourage families to focus on finalising enrolments ready for the 2023 Prep transition and information sessions next term. All enrolments need to be into the office by 2/9/22 so that they can be entered into the system ready for enrolment interviews to be held during the last two weeks of this term, from the 5 through to the 9 September. These meetings are where we go through the enrolment process and collect information re the child and their needs for class placements for 2023.
Enrolment interview bookings will be open through the SOBS system at the address below. Information has gone out to enrolled families and are attached below as well. Please pass on this information to families who are looking at our school for 2023, whether in-catchment enrolments or intending to apply for an out-of-catchment placement, if available, as we are hoping to have three straight Prep classes again in 2023.

Bookings available from the 5 to the 9 September between 1-3:30pm each day for 30 minute interview slots.
Booking System Opens on Monday 29 August 2022.
MULTI-PURPOSE COURT ROOF
We are currently having to re-tender for the multi-purpose court roof project to get accurate pricing due to increased building and steel prices, in the hope of finally getting this project off the ground. With the additional time our P and C and school community have had to raise further funds towards the project, in addition to what was initially committed and the offer of additional funds from the School Subsidy Scheme, we are hopeful that this time we may be able to get the project completed before further increases again make it unattainable in the current market.
EDIBLE GARDENS
In collaboration with the building company ICM and also HYMIX they are donating and erecting four raised garden beds for the environmental committee and club to create some edible gardens in the school. These new gardens will be located at the back of E Block. The plan is to hopefully provide produce that the tuckshop could use and then to sell the remaining produce to provide funds the Environmental Club funds to maintain and continue the gardens. We have some good quality worm soil and worm juice ready to go onto the new gardens also. Our students are doing a great job collecting food scraps for the worm farms as we are now progressing into the top levels of the worm farms. It is wonderful to hear feedback from parents about how children are wanting extra fruit and scraps to give to the hungry worms!
The new label for the recycling bins have arrived and look great on the new colour coded bins. We are continuing to educate our students around which rubbish goes into which bins. Our Environmental Club are doing a great job in monitoring and sorting any foreign items from the bins.
FLAG POLE
The new flag pole which has been purchased through the Past Students and Staff of ESS group has been ordered and preliminary footings work done so it will be installed very soon. This purchase was in addition to the lovely cabinet for archives in our office foyer which I featured in the last newsletter. These additions to our school were made possible through donations from the 150th celebrations and also an anonymous donation to cover the shortfall in funds raised. We look forward to being able to proudly fly the Australian, Queensland, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags each day on the four flag poles.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson
Principal
Term 3 is progressing quickly and we are already on the downhill slide to holidays! Students are busy completing assessment tasks acting on teacher feedback to improve their work. It is always very enjoyable to visit classrooms and hear the rich discussions and observe quality teaching and learning happening. This week I was visiting a Year 1 classroom and the students were using iPads to record interviews with their peers as practice for their assessment task. I was impressed with their skills using the iPads and their confidence in responding to the interview questions. I also spent time with Year 5/6 in a drama lesson with Mrs Wilcox and was thoroughly entertained by the students demonstrating roles and relationships between characters in a melodrama through voice and movement. We have some talented future stars!
The new playground is finally open and students from Year 3-6 are now able to enjoy the equipment that has been behind the fences for what seems like an eternity! We anticipate that the playground will be extremely popular, so we have rostered various Year Levels to access the playground at different breaks across the week to manage the numbers and safety.
Pillar Practice
This fortnight for our Pillar Practice, we are focussing on ‘Being Safe and Respectful’ (Red and Green Pillars) by solving problems with our Enoggera High 5 and conflict resolution skills. Students are continually taught to keep their hands and feet to themselves when they are frustrated, and by teaching the High Five and other strategies, we are providing students will tools to solve problems appropriately. It is important for parents to be aware of the School Pillars we are practising so that you can encourage your children to reflect on the school expectations and reinforce them through discussions at home.
Our school Facebook page is a handy way to keep up to date with upcoming events! We encourage all of our parents to follow our page so you can enjoy the wonderful experiences our school has to offer. The more you interact with the page by liking and commenting on posts, the more our page will appear in your newsfeed. Messages and questions on our Facebook page can be overlooked, so this is not the quickest and most reliable way of getting clarification around school events. It is always best to ring the office or email the class teacher. We continue to add events to the calendar, so be sure to check the events tab to see what is coming up in the term ahead. Thanks for your support of our Facebook page and for interacting on the page with respect and support.
The Student Council would like to thank the school community for supporting their PictureProducts fundraiser. The drawings and order forms have been collated by Miss McCarthy in the office and have been posted away for printing! The next initiative for the Student Council is to participate in Dress Like a Pirate Day to be held on the last day of the school term (Friday 16th September). Students are asked to bring along a gold coin donation which will be donated to the Childhood Cancer Research.
Morning Routines
A friendly reminder that all students are to be waiting under D Block before school unless they are with a parent. Students in the care of their own parent are permitted to wait under E Block. For duty of care, all other areas are out of bounds as they are not supervised before school. When students are waiting with parents, it is important that are expected to remain seated and to not run around playing, to keep our ‘before school expectations’ consistent for all students. Thanks for your assistance with our morning routines.

Hello from Prep!
In English, students have been very engaged with rhyming stories. Our classes have listened to a range of rhyming stories and made lists of rhyming word families. We are now completing our assessments by writing our own rhyming poem with a rhyming. Students have had lots of opportunities to enjoy reading rhymes in stories and looking at different features of a rhyming story and a list. Ihas been a lot of fun.
In Maths. we have been gathering data by asking questions and using tally marks to record the information we have found. In Prep B, the children investigated what fruits that their classmates like to eat for supersnack. They have used the information they collected and shown this data on the interactive whiteboard using people shapes to represent their data.
In Prep C, the children have created a Pizza shop to practice collecting data by asking each other questions about what they want on their pizza. This has been so much fun and children have been rolse play writing. Have a look at the pizza shop in Prep C.
Prep A sociodramatic play has seen us set up a police station. We made a list of the props we needed & made walkie talkies, police badges, notepads & a police car (out of the box for our new air conditioner!) We use our literacy skills to write notes, create maps & draw “Wanted” posters so we can solve crimes. Mrs Nelson was even given a “speeding ticket”.
In Maths students have also been learning the days of the week and thinking about activities that take place on different days. Prep B drew pictures of activities they do each day of the week. We have also done some experiments to investigate activities that take a long time or a short time.
In Science, we have been learning all about the weather! We have been observing different types of weather and have been investigating the activities which we can do when it is hot or cold or rainy. We really enjoyed investigating the clothes that we need to wear when the weather changes. Prep B loved dressing up in clothes to suit different weather.
In HASS we have been investigating the world around us. We have looked at features of places and how we can care for them. Below are some models that Prep C made of their dream house.
It’s exciting to watch as the Preps learn more independence each day as they grow and learn in preparation for their transition into Year 1 next year.

Book Week 2022
What a fabulous time we have had celebrating book week this week. Many activities have been on offer in both the classroom and the library. Activities relating to this year’s theme of Dreaming with eyes open have had students making dream catchers, whale tail collage, gift bags, eye glasses and writing postcards for Grandma. Students have been lucky enough to have “VIP” reading available at both breaks in the library with many staff members donating their time to assist with reading this year’s shortlisted books. Activities and reading will continue for the remainder of the week.

R U OK? THURSDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER 2022
You have what it takes to make a difference
You don’t need to be an expert to ask R U OK? Listening and giving someone your time might be just what they need to help them through. The work of health professionals is vital, and their value cannot be underestimated, however we can all play a role in supporting the people in our world.
When we genuinely ask, ‘are you OK?’ and are prepared to talk to them about how they’re feeling and what’s going on in their life, we can help someone who might be struggling feel connected and supported, long before they’re in crisis. A conversation could change a life.
