Dear Parent and Caregivers,
Welcome back to Term 3 at ESS! After a busy end to Semester One we are back into routine and commencing new units of work for this new semester. We have a number of new students and families who have joined us at ESS this semester, so we give them a warm welcome and hope that their time with us is positive and memorable. I am sure you will join with me in making our new families feel welcome to our community.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
In week 4 (Tuesday, August 1) we will be holding the Semester Two Parent Teacher Interviews in EPAC from 3:15-7:30pm. Information will be provided by Mrs O’Malley today re booking the interview slots though our SOBS platform. The bookings will open tomorrow.
The focus of these interviews, is again including students in the conversations (3-way conferences), as the research says this is best practice in enabling students to take ownership of their learning. It is a great opportunity to discuss the Semester One report and to make some goals for Semester Two. Therefore, we highly encourage students to attend the interviews with their parents and for them not to be left outside while only parents attend. Please note that the rest of the school and the playgrounds are out of bounds during the interview evening, so students should not be wandering around the school playing whilst parents attend the interviews.
NAIDOC WEEK
In the second week of the school holidays (2-9th July), Australia celebrated NAIDOC Week which is the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee. This year the theme of the week was to ‘For our Elders’. To mark this week our classes participated in some NAIDOC activities throughout last week at school and we hosted the Googabinj incursion on Wednesday in EPAC. It was wonderful to see our students engage with the performance and the activities available including the colouring in competition which was announced on assembly.
SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDELINES
In case you missed the information in the newsletter at the end of last term, I have included this article again to remind parents around their responsibilities around media and also social media, as I have had concerns raised with me that some parents are taking photographs of others’ children at school events and are posting them on their own social media or are sharing the school Facebook images on other social media accounts. Whilst we have permission to photograph and post most of our students on our school social media account, this does not cover parents saving them from there or reposting them. The DoE guidelines for parents and the community around Social Media can be found here but it is particularly important to point out this section. https://behaviour.education.qld.gov.au/resources-publications/Documents/social-media-and-community-online.pdf
MULTI-PURPOSE ROOF
We are still awaiting the safety certification and council approvals to enable the hand-over of the multi-purpose court. We are all very excited to get back out there and try it out, as it looks fantastic. The P and C were notified in the last week of last term that they were successful in the ‘Stronger Communities Grant’ and therefore we were able to get the contractors to go ahead and install the additional $28 000 in lighting to the structure. This included installing eight LED lights to the space which was completed over the holidays. Thank you to all of our P and C and community who have stayed focussed to see this project through. It was handed over to me in December of 2020 and has taken until June 2023 for it to come to fruition, through a change in P and C executive members. So, I think this P and C executive and members should be very proud that they continued the unrelenting focus on this project to finally see it completed. It certainly is a magnificent structure which Mrs Burrows tells me you can see all the way from the hill at the Grange.
UNDER EIGHTS DAY
In the last week of the term we had a very busy week with lots of end of term events. Our Under 8’s morning on the last day of term was a wonderful community event, where parents took small groups of students around to the various activities facilitated by the staff. We were very excited to have the Everton Park Library staff at the event and also our friends for the local Child Care and Kindies join in the fun. We also had our Emergency Services attend in the Fire Brigade and the Queensland Police Service and of course our OSHC Camp Australia ran the very popular face painting activity for us. All in all, it was a wonderful celebration for our Under 8’s to finish the term.
SLIME RUN FOR CHAPLAINCY
Our Slime Run for Chaplaincy in the last week of term was also a fantastic success with the Chaplaincy Committee raising over $20 000 to fund the shortfall in Chaplaincy wages to ensure we can keep a Chaplin in our School for 2 days per week for the foreseeable future. It was great to see the students, staff and parent volunteers having a ball sliming the students or being slimed. At the end of the event we announced the students who had raised the most money-Tristan H (4A)., Liliani P, (Prep C) and Jackson H (Prep A) and who had the privilege of sliming Mrs O’Malley and myself and then the class who raised the most money and won the pizza party, which was 4A. A massive thank you to everyone who supported this very special fundraising event.
FULL SCHOOL REVIEW
I would like to share a third of the five key affirmations from full school review conducted at the end of Term One. These affirmations are listed in the Executive Summary available on our school website which informs our Quadrennial School Review.
A strong sense of collegiality exists amongst teaching teams.
Teaching staff describe a supportive and engaging work environment in which they work collaboratively with year level colleagues. They speak appreciatively of informal and formal sharing of ideas, resources and advice. Many comment on the team’s shared responsibility for student learning. Additionally, some indicate that constructive feedback from colleagues supports them to improve student outcomes.
Again, this was wonderful to have affirmed for our school staff and is very positive feedback.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson
Principal
Welcome back to the new term. I hope that you all had a lovely holiday with your families over the break. It is sure to be another fantastic term of learning and fun at Enoggera State School with the Book Week Parade, Science Week, Year Level Excursions, Volleyball Cup, and Wakakirri! Our first assembly was a great celebration of the students in our school with lots of awards and certificates presented to students for Student of the Week, NAIDOC Week colouring competition, Environmental Excellence and Mathletics/Mathseeds.
A reminder that there are two days that our school is closed this term:
Wednesday 16th August for the EKKA holiday
Friday 1st September for a departmental Student Free Day.
These dates and other events can all be located in the newsletter calendar and on our school Facebook Page.
Stationery Restock
As we begin Semester Two, please check with your child or your child’s teacher if they need any stationery items to be restocked! It is surprising how quickly students go through their pencils, erasers and colours with all the learning activities that they complete every day. As always, please ensure that all items are individually named clearly to assist your child to manage their belongings. This is the same for items of clothing, shoes and hats. If items are clearly labelled, it is more likely that they will be found and returned to your child. Before coming to the office to ask about lost property, please check the lost property shelf near the uniform shop under A Block.
As the weather remains cold over the winter months, a reminder that students are required to either wear a school jacket available at the uniform shop (open Tuesday morning from 8am); or a plain jumper in a school blue colour. Students are not permitted to wear hoodies or jumpers with any printing or designs on them.
Girls are permitted to wear blue stockings (or black if blue is unavailable). All students can also wear plain school blue tracksuit pants. A reminder that girls should be wearing suitable earrings and headbands to school. Headbands should be in school colours and earrings should be limited to plains studs.
This Dress Code was developed collaboratively with the school community and supports the wearing of a school uniform to promote a sense of belonging and school pride. It also promotes a supportive environment fostering mutual respect among individuals at school by minimising visible evidence of economic, class or social difference. Thank you for your support of our School Dress Code.
Our school has a very active Facebook page with daily posts to keep our school community informed of what is happening in our school. Our events are posted throughout the term to allow parents time to be prepared for the term ahead. Click on the more tab and then the events tab in the dropdown menu to go to our events.
The more you interact with the page by liking and commenting on posts, the more our page will appear in your newsfeed. A reminder that Facebook is not the best platform to ask questions that you need immediate or urgent replies to, as we don’t always see questions in the comment sections of a post. This is best done by emailing the teacher/admin or calling the office. Facebook is also not a site for posting complaints or negative comments about staff or school processes. If you have some constructive feedback for the school or an issue that you would like to raise, we would respectfully ask that you make an appointment to speak with the Principal to discuss your concerns. Any inappropriate or derogatory comments will be removed from the platform.
Pillar Practice
Our three school pillars including Safety (Be Safe); Relationships (Be Respectful); and Learning (Be a Responsible Learner). Each fortnight at Assembly, a Pillar Practice is shared with staff and students that becomes our focus behaviour improvement. This fortnight, our Pillar Practice is around improving our behaviour under the buildings particularly at eating time and line-up times. Mrs Robinson and Mrs Burrows are out and about every day for the next two weeks, awarding points to classes and eating areas for their behaviour. Winning classes will be announced at assembly in Week 4.
All class teachers are provided with a poster for their classroom and will explicitly teach our school expectations around the relevant pillar and behaviour. Students are reminded daily about our focus behaviour with the goal of improving this behaviour across the school. The Student Engagement and Behaviour committee reviews behaviour data across the school at their meetings to discuss future focus areas for identified behaviours of concern. This process is documented in our Student Code of Conduct and is part of our explicit teaching of behaviour in our school. You can support us by being aware of the current Pillar Practice and discussing the expectations with your children at home.
STUDENT COUNCIL
The Subway Meal Deal raised approximately $250 for the Student Council. Thanks to those who supported the fundraiser at the end of last term. A reminder that the Student Council supports the Sustainability Club’s Wrapper Free Wednesday initiative and ask that parents consider how they can reduce waste in lunch boxes on Wednesday. The Student Council will be meeting this Friday with Mrs Robinson and Mrs Burrows to discuss their plans for Term Three. They will be supporting a charity, running a wellbeing initiative and continuing to fundraise for their legacy item during the term.
One of our current School Council parent representatives, Lisa McDonald, has recently stepped down from their position. We are very grateful to Lisa for the valuable contribution she made to the School Council. This has created a parent representative vacancy on the School Council and the opportunity for any interested parents to submit a nomination form. The School Council meets once every term on a Monday afternoon from 3:15pm for approximately an hour. The meeting is both in person and via teams, so you do not have to come to school to attend the meeting. Nominations will be voted on by the current members at the meeting on Monday28th August. The meeting has been postponed for 2 weeks from the original date due to scheduling conflicts. Nomination forms should be email to Tina Burrows (tburr11@eq.edu.au) as the current chair of the School Council by Friday 25th August.
We look forward to receiving any nominations and welcoming a new parent representative to our School Council.

Hello Parents and Caregivers,
Just a quick reminder that some parents/caregivers have credits on their student accounts. As we have a few excursions coming up in term 3, please feel free to contact me in relation to these credits to either check or apply to invoices.
Apologies for last weeks confusion on invoices and statements. The Department of Education’s accounting system seems to have been sending sporadic emails out as an error.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email me on bsm@enoggerass.eq.edu.au
Have a great week, Ellie.

The students have been using our little clocks to explore time during an explicit lesson and then the students have been using the iPad and using “Time Lion” and Mathletics/Mathseeds to check their understanding.
Length has included using many different items to measure. Firstly, the students have been using their eyes to guess which items are longest and shortest but then they have been using all sorts of different non-uniform units (MAB, counters, unifix cubes) to check if their sort was correct.
Finally we have been exploring capacity (how much does it hold) and that was the most fun because the students got to play in the sand pit. They were learning how to measure accurately and the importance of counting so they could answer the important question, “How many does your container hold?”
Gardening Club is blossoming. We have begun harvesting vegetables. Green beans and Beetroot. Our vegetables have been organically grown. They were fertilised by worm wee just before the holidays began. Hopefully, the tomatoes will begin to fruit. This week we will learn about all the ways you can eat beetroot and hopefully the beans will end up in our benta boxes from tuckshop.
Gardening club is every Wednesday, 2nd break. During this time, we will plant, fertilise, harvest and care for plants in our vegetable gardens and behind EPAC for the P & C. We will also begin to learn about the importance of the worm farms and the tumble bins for the production of healthy vegetables.
Welcome back to another busy term in sport.
Last week to help with our NAIDOC events, in PE we focused on a range of traditional indigenous games. We played, Kai, Gorri and Wulijini. Have a chat with your students and see what they thought of the games.

Tuck Inn
Can you help us during the school term at the Tuck Inn.
We are very lucky to have such a wonderful uptake of what the tuckshop offers but someone must then make it all.
Please see the volunteer link below to help on a Wednesday or Friday. We are even looking for parents to help with putting stickers on the tuckshop bags which is a 15-minute job.
If we cannot consistently get enough help, we will have to look at decreasing the quality and quantity of the items sold and cancel days, which we really would prefer not to do. Some of these actions have already taken place.
Maybe a grandparent would like to help- all they need is a BlueCard.
If you can’t help physically, why not some home baking which can be done at any time.

https://www.facebook.com/EnoggeraSSPandCDefence Kids HQ Club
Welcome back Enoggera Defence Families and Enoggera Community to Term 3. I have really enjoyed over the last week hearing about all the wonderful stories and adventures our students had to share from their two-week break.
NAIDOC WEEK – (FOR OUR ELDERS)
Last week in Defence Kids HQ we acknowledged and celebrated the 2023 National NAIDOC week’s theme For Our Elders. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders are a fundamental part of our communities. Our Elders are our wisdom keepers. They have witnessed the many changes, so dramatically incurred in their lifetime. They are the vital bridge between the modern world and Aboriginal culture. NAIDOC week was the perfect opportunity for our Defence children to participate in a range of culturally rich activities and to support and amplify the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. As a defence club we achieved this through learning about how our Elders stories have been told through Aboriginal art.
Visual Story-telling (Using symbols to create meaning)
From Dreamtime stories to important stories of survival, and historical events, Aboriginal art gives great significance to the culture. Various tribes can have their own symbols that create meaning specific to them, and by doing so we can learn about the importance of their family and their experiences through the generations. Our defence students were so enthused to paint their symbols to create visual meaning from the rich literature and dreamtime stories we shared.
Parental Absences:
Our parental absences have increased since coming back from the school holidays with more of our defence parents being posted on exercises and deployments. A friendly reminder that as Absences begin to increase in the ADF, to please update myself on any upcoming Absences. You can also email myself, let admin or your child’s classroom teacher know. This information is really important so that I can ensure I am there pre, during and post preparation in supporting your child during their parent/s absence. Thank you to those parents who have emailed me already updating me on their current/future absences. It is greatly appreciated. Please see below for some of the ways we can support your child during a parental absence.
