Dear Parent and Caregivers,
P AND C AND SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETINGS
Recently both the P and C and the School Council have met. The P and C meeting was focussed around following up from the very successful Family Fun Day as part of our 150th celebrations. It was very pleasing to hear that the P and C raised around $12 000 in profits from the event. There was also discussion around the pedestrian crossing on South Pine Rd, and I am pleased to advise that just this week I have been involved in a meeting to look at some options for a submission around this crossing and others on our active travel routes. This will support the safety of our students on their way to and from school.
At the School Council meeting, the new School Council members took on their roles on this committee and we talked about the strategic planning for the school and the infrastructure plans moving forward. This is the beginning of the next tenure on School Council for this new committee and we look forward to working with them. The new School Council consists of:
Tina Burrows (Deputy Principal) Appointed Member and School Council Chairperson
Anne Robinson (Principal)
Renee Coyne (P and C President)
Darren Roxburgh (Teaching representative)
Raewyn Roxburgh (Non-Teaching representative)
Lisa McDonald (Parent Representative) and School Council Secretary
Amanda Kershaw (Parent Representative)
HUMAN RESOURCES
Last week we welcomed back Ms Leanne Haslam to the Admin team as her tenure at Wooloowin SS finished up and Mrs Melinda Spurrell moved to a position closer to home at Mt Crosby SS.
Currently we are still working on finalising staffing for 2022, but I can announce that we have a number of permanent staff transferred into our school for next year. These transfers in will fill positions where teachers have requested transfers and have been successful, teachers retiring, teachers moving to different roles within the Department and also some temporary contracts. These positions have all been filled by teachers entitled to transfer and/or who have completed rural and remote service. As our school is part of a larger organisation, we are not autonomous in our staffing and are part of the state wide transfer system which ensures that staff are able to move between regions and return to preferred areas.
I can announce the following for next year:
- Mr Peter Chinn has been transferred to Grand Avenue SS closer to his home.
- Mrs Mary Fitzgerald and Mrs Tracey Barton have recently or are retiring.
- Mr Mark Schwarten and Ms Melinda Stone will be moving into District Relieving Teacher (DRT) roles within the Region.
- The following teachers have been transferred into Enoggera SS for 2022- Jaime Hall (Torquay SS, Hervey Bay), Amanda Boone (Bardon SS), Linda Hawes (Annandale SS, Townsville), Jason Taylour (Earnshaw State College), Lauren Micelli (Crestmead SS), Jacqueline Egerton (Eimeo Rd, Mackay), Belinda Harris (Edge Hill SS, Cairns)
By next newsletter I will be able to announce which year levels or areas of the school our teachers will be on for 2022.
ARTS ON STAGE
It has been a busy term for our Arts staff and students after a rather long hiatus from performing. They have already been involved in Wakakirri and the 150th Family Fun Day and are now preparing for their final performance at the annual Arts On Stage event.
The Arts On Stage event for all of our performing Arts students and their families, will be held in EPAC on Friday 19th November. This is an opportunity to showcase the program, their skills and to provide the students with another performance opportunity. The evening will commence with an early sausage sizzle for dinner from 5pm with doors open at 6:15pm and the show commencing at 6:30pm. We anticipate the evening will be all finished by 8pm.
To assist with maintaining the facilities and to support our performing arts programs this year, the event must be ticketed due to COVID, we are charging a small ticket price of $5 per ticket or $10 for a family of 4. This will be managed by the P and C through the QKR! app where food can also be purchased.
PREP TRANSITION
Last Friday we held our first Prep transition morning for this year. It was really well attended with most students enrolled for next year in attendance. Thank you to those parents who stayed to attend the information session and we hope that you found the information useful. As most of our enrolled families already participated in the information session last week, next Friday we will not run the session again but instead provide the materials from the session for any families who were not able to attend. We will also have a tea/coffee station available outside EPAC this time and members of the admin team will be available to answer any questions. The uniform shop will open once again from 10:30-12:00pm.
A reminder that students will need to be signed in, labelled and in their groups ready for collection by the Prep teachers at 9am and will be back at EPAC ready for collection at 10:45am. This week there may be some refinement to the groups and there will be different staff members allocated to the groups, so that all staff can have input into the final placements following the transition sessions.
2022 PLACEMENT REQUESTS
Thank you to those parents that completed Class Placement Request forms and who have notified us of their intentions for the 2022 school year, as this will help with staffing and planning for next year. The class allocation process has commenced and this information will be emailed to parents as usual in the last days of the school year.
Till next time,
Mrs Anne Robinson
Principal
Term Four is racing by and we are already creeping up to the end of the school year with only a little over four weeks to go!! There are many events coming up over the last few weeks of the term, so please ensure that you check our Facebook page for the details of these events including Arts on Stage, Swimming Carnivals and the Principal’s Awards Assembly.
This week, the weather bureau has warned us to expect a lot of rain. Although we have been lucky so far, apart from a storm that hit during assembly when we were all safe and dry inside the EPAC, we are expecting heavy rain over the next two days. Please speak with your children about safe behaviour during rainy days. This includes not playing in puddles, moving safely up and down stairs, walking on wet surfaces and staying out of the rain.
A friendly reminder to parents that students should not be arriving at school before 8am in the morning. There are no staff on duty for supervision before 8:15am so this is the better time to be arriving after if possible. It is a long time for students to be waiting to start school if they arrive before 8am and this is when issues can arrive with behaviour.
If you require before or after school care for your child you can contact OSHC on 0418 747 960.
Once the rain has cleared, it is highly likely that the weather is going to get significantly hotter for the remainder of the term. Please ensure that your child is bringing a drink bottle to school with water that can be refilled at the bubblers. Students will be encouraged by their teachers to drink water throughout the day to remain hydrated.
As we head into the final weeks of school, our children can become tired and emotional. They can be experiencing sadness about leaving their current class teacher and nerves about moving up to their new year level next year. They will have been working hard on their assessment in all subject areas as well as participating in swimming lessons! This can result in some out of character behaviours happening from time to time.
Tips for helping your child finish strong:
- Put a countdown on your fridge so they know how long they have to go
- Talk about their day – sharing positive experiences
- Listen to what is causing them any stress and offer reassurance and advice
- Remind your child about the school pillars – Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be a Responsible Learner and ask them to tell you how they are demonstrating these at school
- Ensure they are getting to bed at a reasonable hour and getting enough sleep
- Limit screen time
- Encourage outdoor play – fresh air and sunshine
- Create and stick to routines in your home right to the end of the term where possible
- Check they are drinking lots of water especially as the weather gets hotter
- Give lots of cuddles and praise positive behaviours!
When is Remembrance Day?
Remembrance Day falls on the 11th of November each year.
On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minutes’ silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation.
In Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day – a day to remember those who died in World War One. The day continues to be commemorated in allied countries.
After World War Two, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom’s proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. Today the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on Remembrance Day.
What is the origin of Remembrance Day?
11 November is universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the First World War. This conflict had mobilised over 70 million people and left between nine and 13 million dead and as many as one third of these with no grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead.
At 11 am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months.
In November, the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years and became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war.
Why is this day special to Australians?
In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute silence at 11.00am on 11 November each year, to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.
On 11 November at 11.00am, we will pause to remember all of the men and women of the Australian Defence Force who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
We will remember them. Lest we forget.
Poppies for sale
Tomorrow morning, our school captains will be selling poppies for 50c under D Block to raise money for the Defence School Mentor Program. We will be observing a minute’s silence at 10:57am just before first break and Defence Family students will be laying a wreath with Mrs Robinson in the Remembrance Garden at the front of the school. The students made the wreath with Emma Ryan the Defence School Mentor.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Emma who will be attending her swearing in ceremony at Defence Recruiting tomorrow next to ANZAC Square for the Royal Australian Air Force.

Assessment and Reporting
Over the coming weeks students will be very busy demonstrating their knowledge, understanding and skills of concepts taught this semester through the completion of formal assessment tasks in key learning areas. It is very important that routines at this very busy and tiring time of the year are maintained. This includes ensuring students are getting enough sleep, eating a nutritious breakfast and making sure that they are coming to school on time every day.
Semester 2 2021 Report Cards will be emailed to parents and caregivers on the afternoon of Wednesday 8th December. For this information to be correctly delivered it is essential that the school has an up to date email address. If these details have changed please contact the school so that our records can be updated.
The email will be sent via Application.ONESCHOOL@qed.qld.gov.au
I ask that you add this address to your list of safe senders so that the email does not send to the junk folder.
Booklists
Bedrock Books have been engaged to stock our bookpacks for years 1 – 6 in 2022. You will be receiving booklist stationary pack information next week via email. Orders need to be placed prior to the 7th December to avoid a $6.50 packing fee. All orders placed before 5th January are guaranteed delivery before the start of the school year.
Upcoming Excursions
Information pertaining to the Prep Nudgee Beach Excursion (28th November) and Year 4 STEM Day at Everton Park State High School (Friday 3rd December) will be coming home this week. These wonderful activities provide students with the opportunity to learn new skills in new settings and ways.
Should you have any queries or concerns around any excursions please contact your child’s class teacher.

This term in Science we have been learning about matter and how it exists in three forms; solids, liquids and gases. We have been doing a lot of hands-on investigations to explore how matter can change state when heat is either added or removed. The students have been focusing on applying their scientific skills to predict, observe and draw conclusions about their learning during these experiments. Some of the investigations we have conducted include; a viscosity race to see how liquids flow; how long different solids take to melt; how the properties of honey change when heat is added and removed; and how long some liquids take to reach their freezing point.
Maths this term has been busy with different topics such as fractions, symmetry, interpreting maps, angles and 3D shapes. The students have impressively taken on the variety of topics and applied their knowledge and understanding with great success. We have been looking at several topics such as symmetry and fractions within the classroom environment, but also extending to outside and in nature. The students loved getting hands-on with playdough and making 3D models of shapes such as triangular prisms, cubes and square-based pyramids to name a few. The next topic we will be exploring is collecting data, graphing, and interpreting these findings, which is always a firm favourite with the students ?

On Thursday 4th November 2021, Year 3 went on an exciting excursion to Trevena Glen Farm. We wanted to know what it was like to work on a farm, to help us write a procedure for our English assessment. We got to participate in 4 exciting rotations of making animal feed, hand feeding the farm animals, exploring the different phases of egg growth and discussing the stages of paddock to plate. Here are some of our highlights:
“My favourite part of the excursion was feeding the donkeys and making their food because the food was so mushy in my hands.” – Ethan M
“I love the goats because we got to see Gus do an obstacle course.” – Chiara
“I loved the egg exploration because the Farmer turned off the lights and we got to see inside of a chicken egg and there was a small babies inside.” – Mason
“I liked the chicks because I got to hold a black chick and the chick pecked my freckles with his orange, tiny beak!” - Olivia
“I liked the rabbits that squeaked so much, it sounded like a bird. I liked the goats that we got to make food for.” – Ivy A
“My favourite part of the excursion was the tractor ride because we got to sing farm songs and save our energy.” – Kai

Robotics
Tuesday lunch times in the computer lab have been super busy! Students have been constructing MBots and our VEX IQ robot ready for coding. Sphero robots have been a hit too. The students are becoming proficient at calibrating the robots prior to use.
Our school have invested in kits of VEX IQ and VEX GO robots suitable for students in Prep through to Year 6. We are hoping to enter VEX school robotic competitions in 2022 and we can’t wait!

The end of year is quickly approaching and we are working on completing our preparations for our final assessments and events. The weather is also causing a lot of uncertainty on a daily basis around which activities we are able to complete. To support our program, please make sure that you are sending anything required for PE to school with your students. We monitor the prevailing conditions at the time to decide whether an activity can be safely completed or needs to be cancelled.
There will be times where we will be able to complete an activity with one class, then need to cancel for the next, or visa versa. While weather forecasts provide us with a guide as to what to expect and allow us to plan for multiple options, we often find that its about the timing of the weather event. This is particularly true for our swimming term – just because rain is forecast, it does not mean it is unsafe to swim and the activity may still continue in a light shower, however, we will withdraw students from this situation where there is a lightning storm around for safety reasons.
Swimming – 2022
Swimming permission forms for 2022 have been sent home to all Prep to year 5 students. Please help us get the program organised for next year by returning the below permission form by the due date.
Important dates for this term:
- Wednesday 1st December – Senior Swimming Carnival (yr 3-6) – all day (Wet Weather back up Dec 3rd)
- Thursday 2nd December – Junior Swimming Carnival (Prep – 2) – morning and middle session.
